National Baseball Card Day -- All the Dodger Cards

Earlier this month Topps and much of the Baseball world celebrated National Baseball Card Day with free baseball cards. Participating stores gave away free packs of cards from a 30-card retail set and every team in the league handed out exclusive 10-card team sets (some teams only had as little as five cards available) to fans in attendance at a specified game. So, there are actually two different sets for fans to chase after. There's the 30-card retail set and a regional team set (consisting of a total 274 cards) available. Directly below is a look at the only Dodger found within the 30-card retail set. It is of Clayton Kershaw. I've also included a pic of an unopened Dodger team set that was given away to fans on Saturday, August 10th on the right.

Diamondbacks Series Starts Friday - Stadium Giveaways, Pregame Info and Other Stuff!

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1938, a day after signing a contract with the club, Babe Ruth puts on a Dodger uniform for the first time. In 1952 Carl Erskine threw a no-hitter against the Cubs in the Dodgers' 5-0 victory at Ebbets Field. This is the first of two no-no's he would throw in his career. The only Cub to get on base was the opposing pitcher, via a walk. In 1973 Dodger outfielder Willie Davis collected his 2,000th career hit at Dodger Stadium when he two-run home run. In 1990 Dodgers catcher Gary Carter broke a National League record for career games caught at 1‚862. He passes former Dodger Al Lopez who set the record in 1946.

Here's a May 19, 1943 ACME press photo of Cardinals outfielder Harry Walker trying his best to break-up a double play, as he slides way outside of the bag to interrupt Dodgers shortstop Arky Vaughn (eBay auction link). His effort would lead to Stan Musial, who hit the grounder, reaching base and eventually scoring the first run of the game (boxscore).

BTW, the ACME descriptor on the reverse actually says that the Brooklyn player featured is second baseman Alex Kampouris, but that can't be right. The play was a grounder to second, who shoveled to the shortstop and then threw to first. Therefore the Dodger above is the shortstop, not the second baseman.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1955 Don Newcombe threw a complete game shutout against the Cubs while facing the minimum of 27 batters, 3-0. He allowed just one hit, to second baseman Gene Baker, who would subsequently be caught stealing. In 1966 the Dodgers sent 1955 World Series hero Johnny Podres to the Tigers as part of an conditional deal. In 1968 the Dodgers signed free agent infielder Ken Boyer. At the age of 37 the aging All-Star would slash .271/.317/.403/.720 with 60 hits, six home runs and 41 RBI's that season. In 1996 Tommy Lasorda managed his 3,000th major league game. It was against the Cardinals, and the Dodgers defeated them in twelve innings, 3-2.

Here's another Spring Training pic from yesteryear, as found on eBay. Dated March 7, 1950 and taken by the legendary Herb Scharfman, we see six Dodgers all vying for an opening at the third base position that upcoming season. Per the description on the reverse:

All Pulling for the Same Job
Vero Beach, FLA... There are plenty of strings attached to the third base job with the Brooklyn Dodgers as these six candidates try the position at the Vero Beach camp of the Bums. Left to right: Bob Morgan, Clarence (Buddy) Hicks, Johnny Jorgenson, Billy Cox, Everett (Rocky) Bridges and Eddie Miksis.

As you may know, rookie Bobby Morgan was the Opening Day starter, but eventually lost the starting job to Billy Cox by mid-season. Below are more links to check out:

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1974 Dodgers hurler Dr. Mike Marshall becomes the first reliever to win a Cy Young award. He had set a MLB record for appearances at 106 and innings pitched for a reliever at 208.1. That's right, a reliever threw over 200 innings and got into over 65% of all Dodger games that season. In 1996 Dodger outfielder Todd Hollandsworth is named the winner of the Rookie of the Year award. He is the fifth consecutive Dodger to win this award and the 16th overall in franchise history. In 2006 Dodger fan Charles Littleton, a 22-year old Saginaw Valley State University student, is TASERed by Saginaw (MI) police when he refuses to remove his Dodger cap during a City Council meeting. He is there to receive extra credit for a sociology class. See a news report here. In 2014 the Dodgers officially hire Zaidi Farhan to be their new General Manager. He takes over a  position previously held by Ned Colletti.
