• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1936 the Dodgers and Yankees complete their very first trade with each other. Brooklyn sent Buzz Boyle, Johnny McCarthy and $40,000 to the New York for Buddy Hassett. In 1984 Pedro Guerrero signed a five-year $7MM contract to stay a Dodger. In 2017 the Dodgers signed free agent outfielder Franklin Gutierrez to a one-year $2.6MM contract. He would only get into 35 games (primarily as a pinch hitter) before shutting down in June due to an recurrence of ankylosing spondylitis.

Opening Day Homestand - Diamondbacks Series Starts Thursday - Pregame Info and Other Stuff!

Opening Day is here! The first home series of the 2019 season begins on Thursday against our rivals -- the Diamondbacks. Below are some odds and ends for this homestand. Below are some important links:

As you know, Don Newcombe passed away on February 19 at the age of 92. Newcombe was beloved by the team -- having been a mentor to numerous Dodger players over the decades. In honor of his life and legacy the Dodgers will all wear a memorial uniform patch featuring his uniform number, #36, all season long. Furthermore, Morningside, Inglewood, Dominguez and Centennial High Schools will also wear the patch this Spring. You can see the patch on the top right.

Also, at the Top of the Park, fans will notice two new additions to the Retired Numbers plaza, five-foot microphones for Vin Scully and Jaime Jarrín. Check out a pic on the left. Additionally, the Top of the Park store has been remodeled for a modern shopping experience. You can see renderings below.

For expedited entry, fans can transfer their Dodger tickets into their Apple Wallet and gain access to the stadium and suites via near field communication (NFC) ticketing technology stadium-wide via their smart watch or mobile device. NFC for Google devices is expected to be ready mid-season. Fans will also be able to utilize Apple Maps in and around the ballpark to find their favorite food, retail store, nearest restroom or Fan Services location. To expedite ordering at concessions stands, the Dodgers have increased the number of Self Service Concession Kiosks throughout the ballpark.

There are two new food items being made available for this homestand only, and they are available at the On Deck Circle stand on Field Level section 48, Loge Level section 133 and Reserve Level section 4. First, you can get the Desert Chili Cheese Dog which features a bacon wrapped hot dog, house made chili con carne, grated sharp cheddar cheese, diced tomato & onion, yellow mustard. Also available is the Chorizo Torta. This features a chorizo sausage split in half, ranchero bean spread, shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, queso fresco, smoked jalapeno aioli.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten a lot of information about this series other than some very unique food items that will be available at Dodger Stadium for the first time, start times and first pitches. The BBQ Rib Platter will be available for this series against Diamondbacks and will be available only at the King’s Hawaiian Grill in the Left Field Plaza. It features smoked baby back ribs slathered in blueberry bacon BBQ sauce, served with parmesan fries. See it on the right.

It is Opening Day at Dodger Stadium.  The game starts at 1:10 PM.  Auto gates open at 10:00 AM, and the stadium gates open at 10:00 AM.  Dodger batting practice will be from 9:50 AM – 10:55 AM.  Diamondbacks batting practice will be from 11:00 AM – 11:55 AM.  Opening Day pregame entertainment throughout the stadium begins at 10:00 AM, and on-field pregame ceremonies begin at 12:15 PM.  As always, tailgating is not allowed within the stadium parking areas.  Go here for information on parking/tailgating restrictions in areas around Dodger Stadium.

• Yes, Dylan Hernandez's story at the LA Times is dumb and immensely short-sighted.  Check it out here for yourself.  In it he laments how the club is wasting the prime years of Clayton Kershaw; which is funny considering the club has won the division the past three years in a row for the first time in its history.  But I digress... After all, I have little patience for this kind of skullduggery.  Fortunately, Dave Cameron at FanGraphs takes on the task of challenging Hernandez's piece (Link Here).  It's worth your time to check out:

Of course, things haven’t gone as well in the postseason, with the team getting knocked out in the Division Series twice and getting eliminated in the League Championship Series once. But judging a team’s commitment to winning based on how they perform in the postseason is a bit silly, given how small the margin is between advancing and being eliminated in a short series. Last year, they got eliminated in a winner-take-all Game 5 by a 3-2 margin, so their season literally ended because they got outscored by a single run.

MOVING FORWARD: The Dodgers, who are back on the road today, will take on the Diamondbacks in their last match-up of the spring at Salt River Fields. Los Angeles fell to the World Champion Kansas City Royals in yesterday’s contest, a 5-1 defeat at Camelback Ranch. At the plate, Joc Pederson doubled in the first inning and then was driven in by a Scott Van Slyke double to record the lone run for the Dodgers. On the mound, Alex Wood allowed just one run on four hits in 3.0 innings in his second start of the spring and Kenley Jansen, Louis Coleman and Pedro Baez each tossed a scoreless inning of relief, while Ross Stripling recorded four strikeouts in two scoreless frames.

• The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks, 7-2, in their last meeting on March 5 at Camelback Ranch.
• Los Angeles, who will host Arizona in its home regular-season opener on April 12, took the 2015 season series from the Diamondbacks, 13-6.

LIGHTING’EM UP: The Dodger offense has been clicking on all cylinders this spring, ranking among the National League clubs in slugging percentage .482 (2nd), batting average .283 (3rd) and on-base percentage (T-3rd). Individually, Scott Van Slyke ranks among the NL’s best in average (.414, 2nd), home runs (3, T-8th), on-base percentage (.500, T-3rd) and slugging percentage (.828, 3rd), while Austin Barnes and Rob Segedin are tied for second with four Spring Training homers.

VIVA MEXICO!: The Dodgers would like to congratulate Adrian Gonzalez and Team Mexico on its 2-1 win in last night’s WBC qualifier against the Czech Republic! Gonzalez finished the night going 0-for-1 with three walks and a run scored. Dodger great Fernando Valenzuela, who served as a pitching coach for Team Mexico in the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classics, tournaments, threw the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game in Mexicali. Team Mexico will face Nicaragua on Friday at Mexicali.

TRIMMING THE ROOM: The Dodgers made their second cuts of the spring after yesterday’s game, optioning INF Micah Johnson, RHP Yaisel Sierra, RHP Ross Stripling and LHP Ian Thomas, while reassigning RHP Jose De Leon, LHP Julio Urias and C Jack Murphy to minor-league camp. The Dodgers have 47 players in big-league camp, excluding Brandon McCarthy and Frankie Montas, who are on the 60-day DL.

TODAY’S PROBABLE PITCHERS:

• RHP Brandon Beachy will make his second start of the spring, throwing 3.0 scoreless frames against the Cubs March 12. Beachy, who has appeared in two games thus far during Spring Training, has yet to give up a run in 5.0 innings of work. He made two starts with the Dodgers in 2015 after being reinstated from the 60-day disabled list, before being optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City where he went 1-1 with a 3.64 ERA in 10 games (nine starts).
• RHP Yimi Garcia will make his sixth appearance, last pitching Wednesday against the Rockies, allowing one run in an inning of relief. He ranked among the NL’s best relievers in WHIP (0.95, 5th), opponents’ batting average (.199, 16th), opponents’ on-base percentage (.242, 4th) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (6.60, 3rd).
• LHP Adam Liberatore will appear in his sixth Cactus League game, after tossing a perfect inning Wednesday against Colorado. Liberatore saw his first big league action last season with the Dodgers, going 2-2 with a 4.25 ERA in 39 games.
• LHP Luis Avilan will appear in his fifth game of the spring, after striking out the only batter he faced against the White Sox Tuesday. He combined to go 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP in 73 relief appearances for the Braves and the Dodgers last season.
• RHP Jamey Wright has thrown 3.1 innings of work in four outings this spring (6 ER), last pitching Tuesday against the White Sox. Wright, a 19-year MLB veteran, last pitched in the Majors in 2014, going 5-4 with a 4.35 ERA in 61 appearances with the Dodgers.

Diamondback President Derrick Hall Channels Trump in Preseason Campaign Video

This video has come out of left field.

Featured is screengrab and a video (as seen below) of Diamondbacks President Derrick Hall doing his best to rally the troops to get behind his insurgent team.  The 2016 season is just around the corner and I guess he figures this is a good way to build excitement.

I dunno.

After watching it I'm not sure if I should be offended or if I should fall over laughing.  As Gene Hackman might say as Brill in the movie Enemy of the State:

"This either incredibly smart or incredibly stupid."

I think it might be somewhere in the middle.

In the video below he does his best Donald Trump impression on the campaign trail, and manages to call Dodgers fans just about every non-expletive word in the book.  Apparently, we are all dirty, smelly, rotten, disgusting, despicable, evil and vile.  We also wear offensive colors.

Wow!  Right?

Blog Kiosk: 12/14/2015 - Dodger Links - Some Odds and Ends

As you may know, yesterday was the 59th anniversary of the day the Dodgers traded Jackie Robinson to the hated Giants.  This was during the tail end of Jackie's career.  He was 37-years old and nearing an end to his playing days. 

After several weeks of leaving everyone in the dark, Jackie finally announced that he would hang them up.  He wrote to the Giants essentially saying, "it's not you, it's me," and penned an exclusive piece for "Look" magazine for the world to see.

Contrary to legend, Jackie did not retire because he hated the Giants.  Instead, he decided to leave the game on his own terms (and with a great job waiting with "Chock Full o' Nuts").  BTW, his deteriorating relationship with the Dodgers may have played a part, as well.  Per a letter penned by Jackie to Dodger GM Bavasi in 1961:

The atmosphere that has existed since 1956 has been regarded by me as something a person of my temperament must expect from people who do not believe in the things I believe in, but felt an organization like yours must be pretty small if records were destroyed because of personality differences. I merely wanted to make it a complete break if this was the desire of the Dodgers organization.

• Holy Moly!  Call me a monkey's uncle.  I guess the Greinke deal did happen out of nowhere.  Via Ken Rosenthal at FoxSports, "How Diamondbacks landed Zack Greinke in 330 minutes."

The D-backs already had made free-agent right-hander Johnny Cueto a $120 million offer, an offer that the pitcher had rejected. They were focusing on less-expensive pitchers, on trades. But, as Hall recalls, he and Kendrick kept saying to each other, “Maybe we’re doing the wrong thing here. Should we go after Greinke?”

Sometime that morning, Kendrick finally decided that the answer was yes. He had figured out a structure of deferred payments that could make a $200 million contract work. He made the call to Hall, setting in motion a frantic, whirlwind afternoon that led to Greinke becoming the highest-paid player, by average annual value, in major-league history.

All in a matter of 5½ hours.

• Via an AP story on ESPN, "Zack Greinke hints deal for return to Dodgers was nearly agreed on."

Zack Greinke was minutes from agreeing to sign with another team when he received word the Arizona Diamondbacks were interested.

Greinke wouldn't identify the other club, but the question was about his former team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he answered with a smile, so it seems it was not hard to decipher.

• Zach Links at MLB Trade Rumors spoke with Johnny Cueto's agent and mentioned the Dodgers:

Dixon could see Cueto forming a strong rotation alongside Adam Wainwright, Michael Wacha, and Carlos Martinez, but he could also envision his client looking good in Dodger blue next to Clayton Kershaw in L.A.’s rotation.  Those are just two of the fits that Dixon can see for Cueto at this stage and he’s still willing to wait for what he feels is an appropriate pact.  

• Via Jim Rome at CBS Sports, "Dave Roberts on Chapman deal: ‘I don’t think that we closed the book’

“I don’t think that we closed the book on that. I know that we are excited about potentially making that trade,” Roberts told The Jim Rome Show. “And obviously, if you see Chapman on the mound and he’s dominate out there and we were going to be better for it. So obviously, with what happened, we are just kind of letting the process kind of play out and we will try to circle back if that’s the case, but obviously, we’re looking at definitely other options. I’m not going to tie ourselves to that right now, but we will kind of let things play out for sure.”

Greinke is Moving On

Aaugh!  Damn you Dave Stewart!

The wait is now over.  According to Ken Rosenthal on twitter, and confirmed by local beat writer Steve Gilbert, Zack Greinke has decided that he will be playing a little southeast of us.  Zach Greinke will be a Diamondback.

After spending the last three years rooting for Zack I will now have to boo him at every turn.

On a positive note, at least he's not a Giant.

BTW, Ken Rosenthal reports that it's a six year deal at $206 million.  That's $34.33 million a season.  Additionally, Jon Heyman reports that the Dodgers maxed out at $31 million a year, and Ray Ratto says the Giants were at six years and $195 million ($32.5 million per).  Also, as compensation for losing Zack, the Dodger will gain an extra draft pick from Arizona in 2016, so all is not lost.  It'll be placed somewhere between the 1st and 2nd rounds. 

For what it's worth, some folks are saying that the Diamondbacks swooped in from nowhere in the last minute.  I don't believe that for a second.  I have no doubt that Arizona had been in the thick of it since the beginning, and that Rosenthal's scoop earlier today was just preparation for the eventual news.  After all, a team doesn't decide to spend this kind of money on a single player on a whim.  They certainly had protracted talks with Greinke and his people.  Via Charlie Wilmoth at MLB Trade Rumors:

Still, Greinke to the Diamondbacks makes a fair amount of sense, and not just because of their ten-figure new TV deal. As FanGraphs’ August Fagerstrom pointed out earlier this week, Arizona already qualified as a sleeper team for next season. The Diamondbacks already had a solid offense headed by two top talents in Paul Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock, and an excellent defense headed by Pollock, Nick Ahmed and Ender Inciarte. The chief reason they only won 79 games last season was their pitching staff, which rated 27th in MLB in fWAR. Their rotation already looked likely to improve somewhat next season with a full season of Patrick Corbin, but adding Greinke provides a much bigger shot in the arm. With Greinke in the fold, the Diamondbacks obviously have a much better chance of contending — not only because of the direct impact Greinke will have on their roster, but because they’ll be keeping Greinke from competing against them.

Diamondback's Series Starts Tomorrow - Scheduled Autograph Sessions, Pregame Info and Other Stuff!

The next homestand starts tomorrow evening with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and several old-time Dodgers will be in the house to sign free autographs for fans.  Below are the scheduled autograph opportunities and other odds and ends for this upcoming homestand.

Monday's game starts at 7:10 PM.  Auto gates open at 4:30 PM, and stadium gates open at 5:00 PM. The first 40,000 fans in attendance will receive a Dodgers sleeved blanket.  See it on the left.

Marcia Gay Harden will throw the ceremonial first pitch and Raza Jaffrey will sing the national anthem. Harden and Jaffrey both star in CBS’ “Code Black.” 

Dodger alum Derrel Thomas will sign autographs in the left-field plaza from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The national anthem will be performed by actor Alan Thicke. Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure founder Ed Randall will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure, a charity dedicated to saving lives by increasing awareness of prostate cancer and the life-saving value of early detection, is supported by Steve Garvey.

The Dodgers will pay tribute to 76 employees with 25 or more years of service in pregame ceremonies. Headlining the list of those to be recognized are Hall of Famers Tommy Lasorda (66 seasons) and Vin Scully (66 seasons), and Special Advisor to the Chairman Don Newcombe (58 seasons), Spanish-language Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrín (57 seasons), Dodger broadcaster Manny Mota (46 years), 1965 World Series hero “Sweet” Lou Johnson (34 years), Dodger alum Ron Cey (31 seasons), Dodger broadcaster Rick Monday (30 seasons) and organist Nancy Bea Hefley (28 seasons).

Others with 40 or more years of service include Security Assistant Manager Edward Gonzales (52), Stand Captain Robert Natelborg (49), Ticket Taker Miguel Yanez (46), Batting Practice Pitcher Peter Bonfils (45), Usher James Harvey (45), Ticket Taker captain Eduardo Becerril (45), Vice President of Ticket Operations Billy Hunter (44) and usher Howard Levine (43).
