More relief pitching depth is never a bad thing.

Earlier today we got word that the Dodgers had claimed another pitcher - this time from the Colorado Rockies. His name is Zac Rosscup and he's a lefty. You can also follow him on twitter here: @zrosscup. To create room on their 40-man roster the Dodgers DFA's left-handed pitcher Edward Paredes. Per a Dodger press release:

Rosscup, 30, has made 10 relief appearances with Colorado’s Triple-A Albuquerque, giving up just one earned run over 8.1 innings (1.08 ERA) and limiting the opposition to a .133 average. The Oregon native was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, and was acquired by the Cubs in 2011 before being traded to the Rockies in 2017. Over the course of his career, the southpaw has a 3-1 record, 5.30 ERA (32 ER/54.1 IP), 1.55 WHIP in 71 career big league games over five seasons. He has limited left-handed batters to a .136 batting average (12-for-88), the third-lowest batting average vs. left-handers among active pitchers (min. 100 batters faced). Rosscup started the season on the 60-day disabled list with a blister on the left middle finger and has yet to play in the Majors this season.

Rookie pitcher Caleb Ferguson and the rest of the relief staff struggled, but the Dodgers offense didn't give up. They fought til the bitter end, but fell short as they lost to the Pirates, 11-9. Per Bob Cohn at MLB.com:

"Overall tonight, we didn't pitch well," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "There's only so much an offense can do." 

Said Kemp: "I don't think we're ever out of games, especially the way our offense has been swinging the bat. It was a tough day today. They scored a lot of runs. We tried to make it into a good game, we did. We came up short, but [Thursday] we've got a chance to win the series."

Kemp went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and a three-run home run to drive in five runs total in the game.

• This Day in  Dodgers History: In 1898 Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets stepped in to be the teams manager for the remainder of the season. The team would not fare very well. The Dodgers would have a record of 38-68 under Ebbets and finish in 10th place overall with a 54-91 record. In 1982 Steve Garvey played in his 1,000th consecutive game. • This Day in Dodger History: In 1928 Giants manager John McGraw does the unusual. In that afternoons game against the Dodgers he calls for an intentional walk with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in a run in the ninth inning to make the score 2-1. Giants starter Larry Benton then struck out the next batter, Harry Riconda, to get the victory. In 1975 the Dodgers traded Geoff Zahn and Eddie Solomon to the Cubs for starting pitcher Burt Hooton. In 1995 Hideo Nomo made his first major league start. He would pitch five innings of one-hit ball against the Giants in a no-decision. The Dodgers would eventually lose the game in the 15th inning, 4-3.

Who doesn't love a Baseball Lifer?

These are the guys who toil day in and day out playing the game they love for little pay -- oftentimes, well past the generally accepted prime for a ballplayer. Nevertheless, they grind it out and they never relent -- which is why Edward Paredes story is so compelling. He has all the hallmarks of todays Dodgers -- you keep working and fighting til the very end.

Duke Snider gives in to the paparazzi and finally shows them some leg.  Featured above is a vintage 1955 International News press photo of "The Duke" sharing his knee warp after Game 6 of the World Series.  (eBay Auction Link) Per the descriptor on the reverse:

Dodgers' Duke of Swat, Duke Snider, shows his bandaged knee top press photographers in the Dodger dressing room after the sixth World Series game today which the Yankees took 5-1 to even the series 3-3.  Snider told reporters: "It's my left knee that's hurt, the one I pivot on, but I'll play tomorrow of it doesn't stiffen up."  Snider twisted the knee chasing a Skowron fly and left the game after the third inning.

• This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1941 the Dodgers traded for soon to be Hall of Famer Arky Vaughan with the Pirates in exchange for Pete Coscarart, Luke Hamlin, Babe Phelps and Jimmy Wasdell.  In 1998 the Dodgers signed free agent starting pitcher Kevin Brown to a seven year $105 million contract.  In 2012 the Dodgers received Skip Schumaker in a trade with the Cardinals -- sending Jake Lemmerman to St. Louis in return.
