Blog Kiosk: 9/12/2016 - Dodgers Links - Ethier, Seager, Oklahoma City and Some Dodger Hazing

As you no doubt heard, the Dodgers held their annual "rookie hazing" spectacle on Sunday evening - after their shutout loss to the Marlins.  Above is one of many pics of the guys that are circulating around the 'net.  In years past this event was held during their roadtrip to San Francisco.  This time, however, they decided to have fun with the rookies during their trip to New York.

• This Day in Dodgers Baseball:  In 1930 Dodger catcher Al Lopez hit the Major Leagues last bounced home run.  Before this day "ground-rule doubles" were recorded as home runs.  In 2000 Dave Hanson broke former Dodger Johnny Frederick's record for pinch-hit home runs during a season with his seventh homer of the year against Curt Schilling of the Diamondbacks.  BTW, Johnny Frederick set his record of six homers on this exact same date in 1932.

Blog Kiosk: 9/22/2014 - Dodger Links - Some Odds and Ends

Yesterday afternoon the Dodger bats continued their hot-hitting-ways by driving in eight runs on sixteen hits against the Cubs, and this time the bullpen didn't falter like on Saturday.  In fact, yesterday's game was a bullpen game; meaning that the pitching would be done solely through the 'pen.

The elder statesman of the staff, Jamey Wright, came out to start the game.  Then, Carlos Frias came in to relieve him after a couple of innings.  He was followed by Chris Perez, Paco Rodriguez, Pedro Baez and Kenley Jansen.  It was like experiencing a Spring Training game during the regular season.

Overall, they gave up five runs, eight hits and struck out a collective 13 batters.  The Dodger offense was fueled by Matt Kemp who had a home run, three singles and four RBI's.  On top of that, five other Dodgers had multiple hits.

With the victory, the Dodgers now have a firm strangle hold on the National League West Division title. They now lead the Giants by 4.5 games and saw their magic number shrink to three games.  With the Giant series starting tonight the Dodger have a chance to clinch the division with San Francisco looking on if they win two games.

BTW, on Sunday the Dodgers held their first annual LA Dodgers Foundation 5K run at Dodger Stadium.  As you can see in the above photo tweeted out by the @Dodgers there was a large crowd on hand.  There were 3,805 runners.  Now, below are some links to check out:

He said he is looking forward to the Dodgers’ next playoff-clinching party because it will feel like his first. Gordon spent most of last season at Triple-A Albuquerque, starting just 23 games for the Dodgers. Even though he made the postseason roster, primarily so he could be used as a pinch runner, Gordon said he didn’t consider himself part of that 2013 team that made it to the NLCS.

“That didn’t count,” Gordon said. “I didn’t feel like I was part of it, to be honest. I hadn’t been there all year. This will be a great moment for me.”

"To tell you the truth, when we swept them [in San Francisco] two months ago, the feeling in the clubhouse was that we needed to sweep. We understood the magnitude of the series even months ago. We've played really well to be in a good position. Now we don't have to sweep, just play good ball. "

• I had failed to mention this over the weekend.  The hazing in Chicago of the Dodger rookies didn't end with only costume play.  Joc Pederson got treated extra special by the grisly Dodger veterans.  On Friday morning he was tasked with fetching some coffee at a nearby Starbucks.  As you can see in the photo below (as instagramed by Joc himself) he completed the task in full uniform.  The person helping him out (walking in front of Joc) is Dodger Clubhouse Manager Mitch Poole.

Blog Kiosk: 9/18/2014 - Dodger Links - Some Dodger Odds and Ends

I won't bother with a recap of Wednesday's game 'cause.... well... it was horrible... and embarrassing... and everything you might expect from a game at Coors Field.  Maybe it was the blistering 85 degree partly cloudy weather (I'd kill for that right now) or the high altitude air in Denver, but the Dodgers just did not come out to play.

That being said, let's just take a step back and enjoy the moment.  We have ten games left in the season, and as Jon Weisman of Dodger Insider noted we only have to go 3-3 in games not pitched by Kershaw or Greinke to win the division (assuming, of course, that they win those games). We are in a great position, and I firmly believe that they've got this. 

So, enjoy the photograph above of a couple of Dodger youngsters enjoying an evening out in Chicago.  Joc Pederson and Miguel Rojas got hazed along with other rookies by the Dodger veterans, and they were sure to enjoy every second of it - as they should.  Go here to check out more pics of this season hazing.  The pic above is via Miguel Rojas on twitter.  BTW, Blackhawks suck!

The Dodgers lead over the Giants is down to 2.0 games and their magic number to win the West stays at 9 games.  The magic number for a playoff spot (wild card berth) is down to four games.  Check out some more links below:

There is one thing I find a bit disconcerting about this set.  The preview pics include a Satchel Paige game-used jersey relic card that appears to use a Kansas City Monarchs jersey.  My first thought is that there can't possibly be many of those in existence (if any at all), so the cost to purchase that jersey would be astronomical - like in the tens of thousands, or more.  Considering that cost and the recent game-used jersey scandal that is sending dealers to the federal penitentiary, I have to wonder if it's even real. 

• Yesterday I noted that Jake Peavy was thinking about Dee Gordon while in the shower.  Apparently, Dee sent him a special text.

Some Cosplay Rookie Hazing by the Dodgers

Even on a day when the Dodgers get walloped by the Rockies the sophomoric tradition of dressing up your rookies in the most ridiculous costumes possible continues.

And thank goodness for that!  Life is too short and the season too long to get worked up over a loss at Coors Field.  After all, these professionals have to take each game one at a time, and allowing this afternoons loss to play with your head does nobody any good.

So, I celebrate this evenings rookie hazing event by sharing the handful of photos that have already made their way to social media.  Certainly, more will show up, so when they do I'll be sure to update this post.  In the meantime, check out some of the cosplay hijinks below.

AJ Ellis Can't Dance

John Travolta, you are not. 

AJ Ellis showed off some moves in the Dodger dugout this afternoon after belting his very first home run of the season... And, I gotta say that I'm mortified, horrified and appalled.

What the heck was that?

Your gyrations make my eyes hurt.  Heck, it's a good thing the Dodgers won the game because if that was our only highlight I might never open my eyes again.

Just when I thought the below photo from "Rookie Hazing Night" at Dodgers Stadium in 2008 was all my fragile eyes could handle, he has to go and do something like that.

Welcome Back to the Blue, Scott Van Slyke!

The Dodgers game of musical chairs continue.  Coming off a spectacular April where he was the recipient of the Dodger Pride Award for the month, AAA slugger Scott Van Slyke will take his bat to Los Angeles for another shot at The Show.  Returning to Albuquerque will be Elian Hererra.  Per a Dodger press release:

The Los Angeles Dodgers today selected the contract of outfielder/first baseman Scott Van Slyke (#33) from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Van Slyke, 26, was leading the Triple-A Pacific Coast League with a .397 batting average, nine homers (T-1st), 32 runs scored (T-1st), a .503 on-base percentage and a .733 slugging percentage in 34 games with the Isotopes. He was also tied for second in the league with 30 RBI. Van Slyke appeared in 27 games with the Dodgers last year, batting .167 (9-for-54) with two homers and seven RBI in his only MLB experience.

Herrera made just one appearance after being recalled on Tuesday, starting Wednesday’s game against the D-backs in left field and going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Last year, Van Slyke made his debut in Dodger Blue, but failed to impress.  Although, he did slug a couple of homers, and recorded his very first hit against the SF Giants.  So there's that.

Damn you, NHL!

• Sam Miller at Baseball Prospectus unearthed some of the writings of Vin Scully from the LA Times in 1958.

Her name was Sister Virginia Maria and she sat behind a large, scuffed desk in an eighth-grade classroom that smelled of ink and chalk dust. She carried a tiny tin pail of water and a little sponge for cleaning the blackboard and it was badge of her profession as much as her long black habit and string of beads.

She was a member of that wonderful group of women known as the Sisters of Charity. She smiled with blue eyes behind a pair of thick spectacles and she frowned with a yardstick across the back of your knuckles. She was a teacher, mother, nurse and confidante to a group of 50 children in a small parish in New York and, above all, she was my friend. She helped me become a sports announcer.

So what are you doing on Wednesday?

• Robert of Trolley Dodgers finds a great video at Flickr featuring the demolition of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Go here to see the video.
• Trolley Dodgers also comes across some incredible photos posted by the Library of Congress on Flickr featuring the Brooklyn Dodgers from the early part of the 20th Century. Check them out here. Below is Red Smith.
• On the day the Dodgers clinch the division title Erin watches an unsuspecting Dodger fan who accidentally falls onto the field get tackled by security. Read about it here. Heavy handed tactics by those in authority seems to be more the rule than the exception these days.
• Of course, you must check out the hazing pics of Dodger rookies at Sons of Steve Garvey. Clayton Kershaw is dressed as Little Bo Peep.
• Cardboard Junkie opens up packs of 2008 Upper Deck X and pulls a Furcal.
• Night Owl Cards shows off a great early 70's set featuring the 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers from prolific card producer TCMA. They are well known for being the chief manufacturer of minor league Baseball cards in the 80's. Check out his website for more pics from the set. Clearly, the best card is below. You just can't beat a card featuring an infield with Jackie, Gil, Campy, Pee Wee and Billy Cox. One of these days I'm gonna add this set to my collection. Fortunately, they are not particularly rare or expensive. BTW, this collector blog is run by a Dodger fan so expect to find plenty of Dodger cards featured throughout.
• Here is a brand new collector blog that will focus on vintage Topps cards and other oddball stuff called The Topps Archives. They start off great by highlighting an interesting press photo celebrating the an early Topps Company publicity stunt in the late 40's.
• 117 original paintings used to make the 1953 Topps set have just been consigned to REA's April 2009 auction. A complete list has yet to released, but I'm hoping Pee Wee Reese shows up. The Jackie Robinson and Campanella was sold in the 1989 Guersney's Auction for $71,000 and $33,000, respectivley. Probably the most desired painting yet to find it's way to the market from this set is probably Satchel Paige. I wouldn't be surprised to see it reach well into the 6 figures if it goes on sale. WooHoo! Photos Are Starting to Trickle In

The Great Hazing of 2007 has been a hot topic of late. When will photos show up? How funny did Matt Kemp look in the fat bikini suit? Did they really make Ethier wear a dress? 13 total Dodger rookies and sophomore players wore costumes and not one photo had yet escaped onto the internet- until now!

You Da Man, Chad!

On Chad Billingsley's blog he provides a little bit of info about the Dodgers recent rookie hazing party.

A lot of people know about teams hazing their rookies and younger players. The vets had us do a little costume party after we finished the Chicago series. I was Robin Hood...no tights...got lucky. Other guys had it way worse, like Snow White, Popeye, a barely dressed fat woman, and others. When we got to San Fran. that night, the bus dropped us off about 6 blocks from the hotel, so we could show off our lovely outfits. It was quite entertaining. I'll work on getting some photos for all to see.

You will forever be a hero to this Dodger fan if you can show us some of those pics.

I Want Pics!

All of the Dodger world is abuzz. The hazing ritual of dressing up your rookies in outrageous costumes during the season continues unabated. Even our own rising stars are not immune from the laughs and public ridicule that comes from being a Major League Ballplayer. Like the Sons of Steve Garvey, I eagerly await photos to share with all of the Dodger world.

Yes, it was time for that annual baseball tradition known as rookie hazing, and this time, because it wasn't done last season, even the second-year guys had to do it. A few had it easy, because they got nothing worse than Disney character outfits to wear on the team charter to San Francisco. Others had it worse. Matt Kemp was given a fat suit resembling the torso of a large woman in a bra and panties and a few other details not fit for a family newspaper.
"It doesn't bother me," Kemp shouted to everyone in the room. "It's San Francisco. I'm going to fit right in."
