Blog Kiosk: 2/16/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Featured in the above United Press Photo is one of the earliest indicators that the Dodgers would be moving out west.  (eBay Auction Link)  Per the descriptor on the reverse:
"It May Happen" -- Officials from the city of Los Angeles arrived at the Brooklyn Dodgers training camp here March 6th (1947) to confer with Dodger officials on the possibility of the team moving from Flatbush to the West Coast city.  Left to right are: Kenneth Hahn, of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors; Los Angeles Mayor Norris Paulson; Dodger slugging star Duke Snider; and Dodger President Walter O'Malley.
The famous Dodger "Bum" as performed by legendary clown Emmett Kelly is seen in the background.  Per a story at Walter O'Malley.com:
Also in attendance were John Gibson, President of the City Council; Samuel Leask, City Administration Officer; John Leach, Los Angeles County Chief Administrative Officer; and Milton Arthur, Chairman of the County Recreation Commission. It was an opportunity for Los Angeles to put its best foot forward and explain its genuine hope of pursuing the Dodgers and bring Major League Baseball to the West Coast, while gauging O’Malley’s interest. During their visit and throughout that spring, Emmett Kelly, the world-famous clown, entertained everyone and his antics were well-received by the fans.
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1989 Orel Hershiser becomes the first player in major league history to sign a contract that calls for a $3 million annual salary.  He signed a three-year $7.9 million contract that will pay him $3,166,667 in 1991.  How quaint, eh?
  • Happy Birthday, Herbie Moran, Ángel Peña, Ramón Troncoso & Clint Robinson!

Celebrating the Number 12 on the Day of 12's

Isn't December 12, 2012 (12/12/2012) suppose to be one of those days that denotes the end of the world?  Was it Nostradamus, or was it the Mayans who predicted that?

I dunno.  All I do know is that this rare combination of numbers and dates on the calendar won't be happening again for like a thousand years, so you better enjoy the day.

With that in mind, I thought I would commemorate this fine Wednesday afternoon by going through the various Dodgers that have worn #12.  See that list below
Bobby Abreau 2012
Justin Sellers 2011-2012
Brad Ausmus 2009-2010
Jeff Kent 2005-2008
Steve Finley 2004
Mike Devereaux 1998
Jim Eisenreich 1998
Karim Garcia 1995-1997
Brett Butler 1995
Jeff Treadway 1994-1995
Dave Anderson 1992
Greg Smith 1991
Luis Lopez 1990
Willie Randolph 1989-1990
Danny Heep 1987-1988
Bill Madlock 1986-1987
Mariano Duncan 1985
Jay Johnstone 1985
Dusty Baker 1976-1983
Paul Powell 1975
Von Joshua 1969-1971, 1973-1974
Jim Fairey 1968
Bob Bailey 1967
Tommy Davis 1959-1966
Babe Birrer 1958
Frank Kellert 1955
Erv Palica 1948-1951, 1954
Ralph Branca 1952
Eddie Stanky 1944-1947
Bob Chipman 1942, 1944
Rex Barney 1943
Rube Melton 1943
Babe Dahlgren 1942
Luke Hamlin 1937-1943
Jimmy Jordan 1934-1936
Val Pacinich 1932-1933
Watty Clark 1931
37 different Dodger players have worn this number.  Of those 37, only one player has any chance of making the Hall of Fame.  Jeff "the grumpy one" Kent wore the number during his Dodger days.  Another notable #12 was Steve Finley, who belted a walk-off grand slam to win the pennant in 2004.  Two of the more popular Dodgers to ever wear the number are Dusty Baker and Tommy Davis.  Although they are unlikely to be enshrined in Cooperstown, I think it's fair to say that they are both stars in our eyes.

Strangely, in 1931 Baseball Reference indicates that only one player wore a number that season and that was Watty Clark with #12.  I wonder why that is?  Also, Ralph Branca, Brett Bulter and Dave Anderson were all longtime Dodgers known for wearing other numbers, but for a short time sported #12.

Collection: Jay Johnstone "The Moon Man" - Who Is that Guy?

Check out the card above.  It is a 2006 Fleer Greats of the Game "Nickname Greats" autographed card of Jay Johnstone.  Notice, though, that it is clearly not Jay Johnstone in that photo.  Johnstone had crazy curly hair.  Besides, the man in the photo above looks way too serious, and that's not a word I don't think anyone would ever use to describe this renowned prankster.

As described in wikipedia:
He pulled off a number of infamous pranks during his playing days, including placing a soggy brownie inside Steve Garvey's first base mitt, setting teammate's cleats on fire (known as "hot-footing"), cutting out the crotch area of Rick Sutcliffe's underwear, locking Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda in his office during spring training, once dressing up as a groundskeeper and sweeping the Dodger Stadium infield in between innings and then hitting homers the next, nailing teammate's cleats to the floor, and replacing the celebrity photos in manager Lasorda's office with pictures of himself, Jerry Reuss and Don Stanhouse. One time, during pre-game warm ups, he climbed atop the Dodger dugout and, in full game uniform, walked through the field boxes at Dodger Stadium to the concession stand and got a hot dog. He also once dressed up in Lasorda's uniform (with padding underneath) and ran out to the mound to talk to the pitcher while carrying Lasorda's book and a can of Slim Fast.
Anyway, does anyone have a guess as to who is in the photo above?

BTW, I first got wind that this was a wrong photo through Dodger Bobble in a post earlier this year.  Some of the commentators on that post think it may be Jim Lefebvre.  What do you think?

Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 8/31/2012

What a gorgeous photo of Vin Scully with a rainbow from his bobblehead night, via twitter @WHoltzman. (Hat Tip: Deadspin)
  • Matt Guerrier is back from the DL; Josh Wall sent back to Albuquerque, via a Dodger Press Release.
  • Tom Hoffarth at the Daily News reviews a new book about Gil Hodges and laments that the Dodgers may inadvertently be the cause for his lack of enshrinement.  Howard Cole calls that reasoning bunk.  I agree with Howard Cole on this, and I don't believe the policy of waiting for a player to be elected into the Hall of Fame before retiring their number to be a bad one.
  • Ramona Shelbourne at ESPN speaks with James Loney about the trade.
"They were giving me opportunities. They just wanted production and stuff like that. It was more of 'Hey, we've got other guys we want to try and mix and match.' That's what they were trying to do, they were just mixing and matching. I understand what it is. But obviously I want to play."
On a side note, at last nights game a video was played between innings featuring several Dodger players talking about which athlete they most would like to trade places with.  James Loney was in it and the Dodger Stadium crowd gave him a big "Boo", and I instantly became disappointed in the fans. Look, Loney may not have been the star we had hoped he'd be, but I never doubted with desire to give it his all.  He gave the effort, and at the end of the day that's all we can ask.  Unfortunately, it just didn't work out.
  • The Stanley Cup will be visiting six local ice rinks on Thursday, Sept. 6 to help raise money for local youth hockey programs.  Go here for information.  50 photo spots will be raffled off by each rink to the public.
