Happy Pi Day - In the Face!

Today is an epic once-in-a-century kind of day for the mathematically inclined.  It is Pi Day (π) and folks are celebrating in all kinds of different ways.  NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has created a math challenge that boggles the mind.  Check that out here.  The World Science Festival has their own quiz to check out (here).  The South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas gave away free mini-pies to attendees.  And here's a fun Pi Day anthem to dance too.

As for this blog, I thought I would celebrate the occasion by creating some fantasy Baseball cards of some Dodger players getting a pie in the face.

Enjoy!

At the very top, Scott Van Slyke took a shaving cream pie in the face for hitting a game winning 3-run home run in a late May 2012 game against the Cardinals.  (Photo grabbed from a video capture seen at Think Blue LA).

AJ Ellis got a pie for his walk-off walk on May 18, 2012 (pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2012).  Justin Sellers received a celebratory pie after hitting his first career home run in August 2011 against Jordan Lyles of the Astros (pic taken by Stephen Dunn of Getty via Sons of Steve Garvey).

The Dee Gordon's pie was courtesy of Matt Kemp (via @Dodgers on twitter) after a walk-off hit in extra innings.  Nate Eovaldi earned his pie for winning his very first Major League game against the Diamondbacks on August 6, 2011 (Getty Images photo).

Blog Kiosk: 10/27/2014 - Dodger Links - Logan White is Leaving Dodgers

Stay tuned.  Puig recently announced on his instagram that newly created Puig signature caps will be soon available on his website.  His website is here.

Below are some links to check out:
One way or another, a Dodger outfielder is moving. Maybe it’s Van Slyke, though that wouldn’t really free up much room. Maybe it’s Puig in some kind of massive deal, though that seems unlikely. Kemp’s second-half surge probably keeps him in the heart of the lineup. Carl Crawford could go, though he’s only mildly more valuable than Ethier is. Most likely, Ethier is going in a deal that sees the Dodgers A) eat 90% of his contract B) take on someone else’s problem or C) both.

Blog Kiosk: 3/3/2014 - Dodgers Links - Kemp, Greinke and Beckett

The above photo was taken by Orel Hershiser after Saturday's game and was shared on twitter.  He said, "Rainbow after game was worth the trip!!"
"His MRI was good, at least to the point where we're allowed to move forward. He's able to do more things. You'll see him out on the field more, you'll see him doing more stuff," manager Don Mattingly said on Saturday. "It doesn't mean he's full go or that he'll be playing games in a week. It's just part of a process of him getting ready."
"It had good spin, I've just got to get the feel back and the release point," said Billingsley. "I definitely was a little rusty."

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 5/Home Game 3

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.
--------------------------
(Some congratulations for Mike Baxter, pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2014)

SUNDAY FUNDAY: The Dodgers host the Padres today for the first of two meetings in Cactus League play, with the other coming in a split-squad game at Camelback Ranch on March 15. The Dodgers open up their “North American” regular season slate against the Padres in San Diego on March 30. In case you’re counting down the days, the Dodgers are just 20 days away from Opening Day in Sydney, Australia vs. the Diamondbacks!
  • The Dodgers rally fell just short yesterday and the club lost, 6-5, against the Brewers at Maryvale Baseball Park. After hitting a home run against the White Sox on Friday, non-roster invitee Clint Robinson had another big game yesterday, going 3-for-3 with a run scored after replacing Scott Van Slyke in the sixth inning.
  • First-year Dodger and Southern California native Dan Haren allowed three hits and one earned run in two innings of work in his first Cactus League start of spring. Non-roster invitee LHP Chris Reed allowed four earned runs in 2.0 innings of work.

HILLTOPPERS: Right-hander Josh Beckett will make his Dodgers debut this afternoon after going 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA in eight starts last season before undergoing season-ending surgery to relieve pressure on his nerves caused by Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. Also appearing in the game today:
  • LHP Paul Maholm will make his Dodger debut after posting a 10-11 record with a 4.41 ERA in 26 starts with the Braves last season.
  • RHP Stephen Fife will make his Cactus League debut after appearing in 12 games (10 starts) in three stints with the team last year.
  • Non- roster invitees RHP Sam Demel and LHP Daniel Moskos will be making their second appearances of the spring. Demel and Moskos both tossed a scoreless innings of relief on Thursday in the Dodgers spring home opener against the Diamondbacks. Demel saw action in parts of three seasons with the Diamondbacks from 2010-2012 and Moskos appeared in 31 games with the Pirates in 2011.
  • San Diego will counter with LHP Robbie Erlin, RHP Jesse Hahn, RHP Kevin Quackenbush, RHP Leonel Campos, RHP Blaine Boyer and LHP Patrick Schuster.

NOTHING MINOR ABOUT IT: The Dodgers will have seven minor leaguers joining the club vs. the Padres today, with pitchers LHP Fu-Ti Ni (#84),  RHP Justin Souza (#88) and RHP Steve Smith (#91), infielders Darnell Sweeney (#87) and Aaron Bates (#97) and outfielder Jon Garcia (#90) all making the trek across the Camelback grounds.

PLAYING IT SAFE: According to Manager Don Mattingly, Dodger right-hander Zack Greinke will have another light day and hold off on throwing his next bullpen session.  In addition, right-hander Ross Stripling is meeting with doctors this afternoon to go over the results of his MRI. Stripling experienced elbow pain last week that worsened with his outing on Wednesday.

PLEASE SIGN HERE: Today the Dodgers agreed to terms with the following players for the 2014 season: Pedro Baez, Nick Buss, Jose Dominguez, Tim Federowicz, Stephen Fife, Onelki Garcia, Yimi Garcia, Javy Guerra,  Matt Magill, Jarrett Martin, Paco Rodriguez, Seth Rosin, Dee Gordon, Scott Van Skyke and Chris Withrow.

ROSTER MOVE: This morning the Dodgers dealt infielder Justin Sellers to the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. Sellers was designated for assignment on Feb. 22 to make room on the roster for Cuban infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena.
(The Diamond at Sydney Cricket Ground, pic via @JPMLBPR on twitter)

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE:  We are just two weeks away from making an early exit from Arizona as the Dodgers will depart the Valley of the Sun on March 16 for Sydney, Australia. Once Down Under, Los Angeles will battle the D-backs on March 22-23 in Major League Baseball’s Opening Series, which will mark MLB’s first regular-season games ever to be staged in Australia. The Dodgers will return stateside and play three exhibitions against the Angels in the Freeway Series before opening the “North American” portion of their schedule March 30 at San Diego on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

It's Now Official - Dodgers Sign Arruebarrena

Over a week ago, the news wires were set a blaze with a story about another Dodger Cuban signing.  It was reported through various channels that we had signed Erisbel Arruebarrena.  Check out my story about it here.

This morning, the Dodgers officially confirmed a new 5-year contract for him.  Per a Dodgers press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today announced the signing of free agent Cuban infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena to a five-year contract.

“Signing Arruebarrena gives us another very good middle infielder, who is an outstanding defender,” said Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti. “It continues our efforts internationally to add talent that can positively affect the Major League club - be it immediately or in the very near future.”

Arruebarrena, 23, posted a .276 batting average with 67 doubles, 25 triples, 27 homers and 171 RBI in 437 career games in six seasons for Cienfuegos in the Cuban Serie Nacional from 2007-2013. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder, who is known for his defense, has appeared primarily at shortstop during his career, but has also played second base and third base professionally. With Cienfuegos during the 2012-13 season, Arruebarrena hit .293 with a .366 on-base percentage, six home runs and 32 RBI in 70 regular-season games before going 6-for-14 (.429) in six postseason contests.

“We are excited to sign Erisbel, who we’ve scouted in international competition for a long time.” said Dodger Vice President, International Scouting Bob Engle. “He brings another superb glove to our organization.”

The Cienfuegos, Cuba native was the starting shortstop for his home country in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, batting .375 with a .444 on-base percentage, four runs scored and two RBI in six games in the tournament. He also played internationally for Cuba in the 2011 Pan American Games and batted .445 (8-for-18) with three runs scored, a double and an RBI in five games.

Arruebarrena (pronounced Arr-ru-eh-BAHR-ena) was a teammate of Dodger outfielder Yasiel Puig with Cienfuegos in 2010-11.

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated infielder Justin Sellers for assignment.
BTW, Ken Rosenthal has some details about the contract.

Also, initial reports indicated that his last name was spelled Arruenarruena, but this notice lets us know that his name is spelled without the second "u".

Arruebarrena is likely to play in the minors to start his professional Baseball career.

UPDATE:  Via Eric Stephen of True Blue LA on twitter:

Here is another fantasy Baseball card I made of Arruebarrena.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Pitchers & Catchers Workout #2

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

ALL IN: Today was the second day of workouts for pitchers and catchers at Camelback Ranch – Glendale. Thursday, position players report with the first full-squad workout of 2014 scheduled for Friday.
  • A number of position players have reported to camp early for voluntary workouts, including Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig, Alex Guerrero, Scott Van Slyke, Nick Buss, Justin Sellers and Mike Baxter. Non-roster invitees Justin Turner and the club’s No. 1 ranked prospect of 2014 according to Baseball America, Joc Pederson, are also here at Camelback Ranch – Glendale in advance of Thursday’s report date.

BACK AT IT: Today marked the second group of pitchers to throw bullpen sessions as Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett, Chad Billingsley, Jamey Wright, Paul Maholm, Stephen Fife, Brandon League, Chris Withrow, Paco Rodriguez, Yimi Garcia and Pedro Baez threw off the mound on the backfields of Camelback Ranch – Glendale. Also throwing their first ‘pens of the spring were non-roster invitees Red Patterson and Carlos Frias.
  • Beckett officially reported to Spring Training today after having undergone season-ending surgery on July 10 to remove his right first rib to relieve pressure on his nerves caused by Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. In 2013, Beckett posted a 5.19 ERA in eight starts before being placed on the disabled list. The three-time All-Star and 2003 World Series MVP ranks sixth among active pitchers (min. 1,500 IP) with an average of 8.34 strikeouts per 9.0 innings in his career and ranks 12th in the Majors with 106 wins since the start of the 2005 season.
  • Billingsley, who also underwent season-ending surgery (Tommy John) on April 24 of last season, continued his rehab by throwing his first official bullpen of the spring today. Billingsley, the longest-tenured Dodger, made two starts before eventually being lost for the season in 2013, failing to post a double-digit win total for the first time since 2006.

DO IT FOR THE KIDS: Outfielder Matt Kemp joined President Bill Clinton, Los Angeles Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant and other sports luminaries in a powerful conversation about the role of sports in the lives of children and the health of the nation through a town hall event on the topic, “Kids and Sports.” The event, which was originally taped two weeks ago in La Quinta, CA, was moderated by Mike Greenberg of ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike, and aired last night on ESPN2.

AMATEUR HOUR: College baseball takes center stage at Camelback Ranch-Glendale this weekend when Seth Rosin’s Minnesota Golden Gophers face Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti’s alma mater, the Northern Illinois Huskies, in a three-game series to open their 2014 seasons. Fans are invited to arrive after 9:00 a.m. to watch the Dodgers and White Sox morning workouts and stay for bonus college baseball in the afternoon. Admission is free and food and beverages will be available for purchase during workouts and the college games.

A Dodger FanFest Roundup - Check Out All of My Photos

Saturday was the 2nd Annual Dodger FanFest, and it was wonderful.  There was plenty of space, a lot of activities, and few of the horrid lines that plagued last years event.  I give the Dodgers group a solid A+ for paying close attention to last years debacle and improving nearly every aspect of the event.

My only complaint is, where was the museum display?  Last year, a phenomenal booth was put together featuring some incredible Baseball memorabilia.  This year, they didn't bother to put one together.  Oh well...

Before I show you all of my pics from FanFest, I thought I would provide links to some other sites that include some great photos.  Check them out below:

FanFest was held in Lots B & P; which are located adjacent to the stadium at the Top deck and left field reserve entrances.  It provided plenty of room to roam around and not feel crowded.  Also, the system of selling tickets (for charity) for player autographs was a great decision.  It removed all of the anger and confusion that hampered last years FanFest.  Furthermore, it's obvious they reduced the number of autograph vouchers available.  Autographed sessions were slated to last 50 minutes, but each player finished up in far less time that that.

I got to Dodger Stadium bright and early, and waited in the line of cars at the Sunset entrance.  When they finally opened the gate it was a mad rush to get in.

One of the first things I saw when walking to FanFest was a group of 3 fellows sporting Puig Destroyer jackets.  See it above.  Unfortunately, I didn't stop them to ask about the jackets, but I'm certain others did.  As soon as I track those interviews down I'll be sure to point you there.

Below is a look at some of the booths and activities inside.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

Below is the booth for the Mystery Bags.  They were selling autographed baseballs, photos and jersey uniforms for $20, $20 and $40, respectively.  I didn't purchase a bag myself, but I saw folks getting autographs of players like Olmedo "the Killer Tomato" Saenz and Mariano Duncan.  I also saw a couple of St. Patrick's Day autographed jerseys in the jersey mystery bags; which I thought was cool.

And the Dodgers Jr. Broadcasters were in the house.  Go here for information about the Dodgers Jr. Fan Club.

There was a booth with a bunch of Dodgers memorabilia for sale; including the below Clayton Kershaw and Vin Scully signed items.

They also opened up the stadium so folks could roam around.  As you can see, they are just starting to fix up the field after last weekends Stadium Series game.

Also, construction is well underway in the outfield pavilion areas.  Last weekend those buildings didn't exist.

I also ran into one of the new Dodger broadcasters preparing to film something.  Below is Alanna Rizzo.

The Dodger fire truck in Lot P.

I went to view the Dodger field from the Top Deck and realized that I could see into the media tent between the autograph area and the interview stage.

Players were greeting each other like they were long lost friends.

Tommy Lasorda is being interviewed below.  Above, you can see Brian Wilson being interviewed, as well.

Below are a handful of photos of some Dodgers speaking from the interview stage.  Below, Ned Colletti let us all know that the arbitration case with AJ Ellis has closed.  AJ has signed a new 1-year contract.

Below, Yasiel Puig is speaking to the crowd.

Finally, I get to the autograph lines.  Check out those photos below.

I was able to get vouchers for Dan Haren, Mickey Hatcher, Justin Sellers, Orel Hershiser, Ned Colletti and Hyun-Jin Ryu.  Check out photos of them below.  I was also able to capture photos of a few other Dodgers while waiting in line; including Nomar Garciaparra below.

Above left is Dan Haren.  Above right is Mickey Hatcher.  Below left is Tommy Lasorda.  Below right is Tim Wallach and Shawn Green.
