Kiké Hernandez spent his New Years Day in Pasadena -- joining his father and former Dodgers GM Fred Claire on the City of Hope float at the Rose Parade on Monday. "For us, we get to see our patients participate in a big event, normal activities away from the hospital, and it gives us a sense of accomplishment," (Dr. Stephen J.) Forman said. "Having Kiké on the float is extra special because City of Hope is Dodgertown. There are a lot of fans among the patients and staff, and it gives us a lot of pride that he honored us by being on the float with his dad. To see father and son on the float together is what it's all about. We wanted them to have this special occasion."

• This Day in Dodger History: In 1911 Dodgers president Charles Ebbets announces that he has completed the purchase of 4.5 acres of land in the Pigtown section of Brooklyn to build a new concrete and steel stadium. In 1935 the Dodgers selected Cubs catcher Babe Phelps off of waivers. He would go on to play seven seasons in Brooklyn -- slashing .315/.368/.477/.845 and attended three All-Star games. In 2004 the Dodgers signed free agent infielder and pinch-hit savant Olmedo Sáenz. All hail the "Killer Tomato".

"I think to sum it up, you'd use the word exhilarating," said Scully, describing what it was like to lead the parade of floats down Pasadena's Colorado Avenue. "From the moment we reached the Tournament House, all the pre-parade excitement. The little chill in the air, that really got your attention, all the pageantry and, above all, all the good spirits of all of the volunteers, along with the policemen and motorcycle officers. It is just an incredible experience from the time we arrived this morning until now."

Kasten said the Dodgers fully expect to open spring training with all four outfielders — Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig.

"I've always thought that was the most likely outcome," Kasten said. "We don't feel the need to move one like the people who write about us apparently feel we do."

Having mastered the spitball while with the Pirates, “Preach” (as his teammates called him) had tremendous success with the Dodgers, including winning records in his first six seasons with the team. Roe finished the 1948 season with a record of 12-8 and an excellent ERA of 2.63. “I try to keep the hitters off balance, never giving them a decent pitch,” Roe once said. “I’m always aiming for the corners, never throwing the same pitch twice or what the hitter is expecting.”

• Clayton Kershaw was named the winner of the 2013 Branch Rickey Award.  Via a Press Release:

Kershaw, currently one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball, will be inducted as the 22nd member of the Baseball Humanitarians Hall of Fame™ during a banquet on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Marriott City Center Hotel in downtown Denver. At 25, he is the youngest person to receive the award.

Created by the Rotary Club of Denver in 1991, the Branch Rickey Award honors individuals in baseball who contribute unselfishly to their communities and who are strong role models for young people. Each year, the Major League Baseball teams are asked to nominate one player from their team for this nationally acclaimed award. All of the nominees personify Rotary International’s motto, “Service Above Self.”

Dodgers Golden Anniversary Starts At The Rose Parade

In 2008 the Dodgers will be celebrating their Golden Anniversary in Los Angeles. The big 5-0 in LA.

They will open the year with a Rose Parade float featuring Dodger past and present greats. Furthermore, it includes 15 very dedicated Dodger employees. They represent a combined 225 year of Dodger service.
In honor of those unsung Dodger employees please be sure to cheer loudly for them if your in Pasadena for the parade. Heck, cheer loudly if your watching on the tube. They are:

• Ray Alvarado of Arcadia , usher captain, 11 years of service
• Cheryl Collins of Burbank, guest relations, 7 years of service
• Diana Darr of Phillips Ranch, usher captain, 16 years of service
• Earl Davidson of Canyon Country, usher captain, 15 years of service
