2019 Topps Total - Wave 2 - All the Dodger Cards

The second wave of 2019 Topps Total cards have arrived in collectors mailboxes, so I now have pics of the Dodger cards to share with you. Go here for a complete checklist.

As you'll see, four Dodgers are available -- AJ Pollock, Caleb Ferguson, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Cody Bellinger. They also sold a total of 7,531 packs -- nearly 1,700 more packs sold than Wave 1. This translates into an approximate print run of about 753 of each base card in the set.

Accentuate the positive.

Ryu was fantastic, once again. Via Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“I thought he was really good,” Roberts said. “He kept those guys at bay in a couple stressful spots and made pitches when he needed to.”
Unfortunately, our relief staff continues to be our Achilles heal, as they yielded four runs to lose to the Angels, 5-3. Photo above Katie Chin/Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Insider. Go here to check out more pics from yesterdays game. Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1955 the Dodgers won their 6th game in a row, defeating the Cubs 4-3, to increase their lead in the National League by 10 1/2 games. They would not see their double-digit lead shrink below 10 games for the remainder of the season. In 1957 Roy Campanella hit his 237th career home run as a catcher to set a new NL record. In 1969 the Dodgers traded Ron Fairly and Paul Popovich to the Montreal Expos for Maury Wills and Manny MotaIn 1972 both Willie Davis and Manny Mota would both hit inside-the-park home runs in a losing effort against the Pirates, 7-5, at Dodger Stadium. In 2013 the Dodgers and Diamondbacks have a little tussle on the field. It begins with Yasiel Puig getting beaned in the head. Then, Zack Greinke immediately pelted the first batter he saw to spark hostilities on the field -- but no punches are thrown. Soon thereafter Ian Kennedy of Arizona throws at Greinke's head and a brawl begins. Eight players are suspended and 12 receive fines. Watch highlights here.

2019 Panini Leather & Lumber - All the Dodger Cards

A couple weeks ago Panini reintroduced a brand, originally created by Donruss in the 90's, called Leather & Lumber. It features numerous die-cut parallels and plenty of relics to fill your fancy. It also has a checklist that isn't entirely complete. There are triple relic cards available that are were not in their original checklist -- along with a single relic insert set that doesn't appear to exist. Nevertheless, there are a lot of fun looking cards, and if not for the missing team logos this set would rank high as one of my favorites this year. Go here for the published checklist.

You can see most of the Dodger cards below.

2019 Topps 150 Years of Baseball - #42 - Mike Piazza

The third Dodger to make it into Topps online exclusive card brand, 2019 Topps 150 Years of Baseball, features Mike Piazza and it highlights his fantastic rookie campaign in 1993. The eventual Rookie of the Year winner slashed an impressive .318/.370/.561/.932 with 35 home runs, 112 RBI and 81 runs scored. Go here to check it out and order. You have until tomorrow to get your order in. Below is what's written on the revere:
In his rookie season, Mike Piazza proved to be the best offensive catcher in the Game, slugging 35 home runs and driving in 112. The rookie carried a robust .318 batting average and caught 146 games. The superb campaign earned Piazza the NL Rookie of the Year Award.

What a fun game. Not only did we witness a pitching duel for the ages, but we also saw some fantastic game-saving defense and hard-nosed squawking on the field. Sure, Bumgarner's act can be tiring, but I will never doubt his passion. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:
“It was fun. Kind of an old-school baseball game — two №1s going head-to-head, and we saw the best of Madison Bumgarner and matched Walker pitch for pitch,” said manager Dave Roberts. “To see those guys go out there and compete and win pitches, win at-bats, it was fun. But fortunately for us, we scored one more run than they did.”

Check out this fantastic Barney Stein photo of a young and dapper Vin Scully at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. It is unfortunately undated (eBay Auction Link).

  • This Day in Dodgers Baseball: In 1898 Brooklyn owner Charles Ebbets stepped in to be the teams manager for the remainder of the season. The team would not fare well. The Dodgers would have a record of 38-68 under Ebbets and finish in 10th place overall with a 54-91 record. In 1982 Steve Garvey played in his 1,000th consecutive game. He would receive a standing ovation from fans at Dodger Stadium. In 1995 Tommy Lasorda won his 1,500th game as a major league manager when his Dodgers defeated the Expos, 7-1.
