This next video is very special.  Below is an original and complete April 20, 1950 radio broadcast recording of a ballgame between the Brooklyn Dodgers versus the New York Giants at Ebbets Field.  Red Barber announces the game, and this is the very first Brooklyn game heard on a national radio network.  Awesome!  A special bonus is an actual recording of Dodgers organist Gladys Gooding signing the National Anthem, and the voice of Brooklyn stadium announcer Tex Rickards.

Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 1/20/2013

The Dodgers’ current contract with Fox expires after the 2013 season. The team had discussed a new deal with Fox last fall, worth at least $6 billion over 25 years. However, as MLB and the Dodgers discussed their differences over the revenue-sharing issue, the Fox exclusive negotiating window expired, enabling Time Warner to initiate negotiations with the team.

  • Both AJ Ellis and Ronald Belisario have agreed to new one-year contracts; thereby avoiding arbitration, via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com.
  • Roberto at Vin Scully is My Homeboy was at the SoCal Baseball Expo as well.  Check out his story here.
  • Matt Kemp is gearing up to be ready for Opening Day, via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com.
"That's my goal," said Kemp, wearing a Dodgers jersey with Jackie Robinson's No. 42 and accompanied by his mother. "I'm hitting off the tee, no soft toss yet. I have my good days and bad days. It's still a little sore. But being ready for the season is all that matters."
  • Topps is putting together a Cubs stadium give away card set.  I have to wonder if the Dodgers will do the same thing.  Please say yes!
  • RIP, Stan "The Man" Musial.  Did you know that he received his nickname from Brooklyn Dodgers fans.  Every time he came up to the plate against us, Dodger fans would exclaim, "Here Comes The Man."
  • RIP Earl Weaver.  In honor of his feistiness watch this great vintage video of one of his most epic ejections.  A word of warning, there is some bad language.

LA Kings Opening Night - Banner Raising

Watch it now.  Pregame starts at 11:30 AM on Fox SportsWest, and the game begins at 12:00 PM on NBC.

I'll be in the Staples Center for the banner raising ceremony and the first game of the post-lockout season.  I'll be cheering, screaming, and going hoarse.  And I'll be sure to file a report from the afternoons event as soon as possible.  It is going to be epic.

Go Kings Go!

Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation Charitable Spring Training Game / Dodgers Community Caravan / An Evening with Don Mattingly

For the 3rd straight year the Dodgers will play a charity game in benefit to the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation on Thursday, March 21st at Kino Stadium in Tucson, Arizona.  They will play an exhibition game against the Cubs.  Christina-Taylor Green was the young daughter of John Green, National Crosschecker for the Dodgers, who was killed during the tragic mass shooting on January 8, 2011 that took the lives of 5 other people and almost killed US Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

The game will take place at 1:05 PM, and all proceeds will go the the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation.  Tickets will officially go on sale on Saturday, February 9th.  Go here for more information.

The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres will hold a similar event for the Foundation, but details of that game have yet to be announced.

The Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation was established by the Green family to receive gifts in memory of Christina-Taylor. The mission of the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation is to honor the life and memory of Christina-Taylor through charitable and educational projects that reflect and embody her interests, values and dreams.

If you are in the area for Spring Training on this day then I highly suggest attending and giving your support.

Dodgers Blog Kiosk:1/18/2013 - Check Out Pope John Paul II in the Batting Cage!

Check out a pic tweeted by @Dodgers of Don Zimmer, Duke Snider, Carl Erskine and Walt Moryn in Vero Beach in the 50's.
  • 7 current Dodgers are playing in the World Baseball Classic, via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com.
  • Emma at Dodger Blue World continues with her biographies of every living Brooklyn Dodger with Lee Pfund.
  • Scott Andes at Lasorda's Lair makes 19 predictions about the Dodgers.
  • Tomorrow afternoon is the official banner raising game for the LA Kings.  There are some pre-game activities planned, so for information go here.  Also, both Marcel Dionne and Daryl Evans will be on-hand to meet and sign autographs for fans before the game.

  • Christopher Jackson at Mike Scioscia's Tragic Illness writes of the lack of shortstop depth in the Dodgers minor league system.
  • Craig Muder at Cooperstown Chatter tells of the 1970 exhibition all-star Baseball game played in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • This is the best Baseball video I've seen all year.  Watch Pope John Paul II taking in some batting practice.  Really, he gets in the cage and takes some swings.  Apparently, he had played on a Vatican softball team.  (Hat Tip: thecolorblew on reddit)  The best comment I saw on youtube said this:
Nothing makes me feel less athletic/coordinated than realizing even a Polish man in his 70s is more comfortable in a batting cage than me.
PS.  I am now unsure if this actually him or a clever hoax.
