2016 Panini National Treasures Baseball - The Dodgers Base Cards

Here is a final look at the Dodger cards found in packs of Panini's 2016 National Treasures.  This time we look at the base cards.  Unfortunately, I have yet to see the Jake Daubert or Max Carey cards.  I'll update this post when they pop up.  Go here to see all of my past post on this set.  Go here for a complete checklist.

BTW, there are five different Dodger "Base Variation" cards available.  You can check them all out below.  As you can see, the variation cards include a nickname or an distinguishing accomplishment by the player.

2016 Panini National Treasures Baseball - Some of the Dodgers Inserts, Part 1

Here is a look at more of the Dodger cards that can be found in packs of Panini's 2016 National Treasures Baseball.  Go here to see all of my past post on this set.

I should note that you should ignore the numbering scheme for each individual card shown below.  The checklist provided by Panini does not provide accurate numbering, and I have also discovered several cards that are not even on their checklist.  Why do they do this?  I dunno.  It's clearly dumb and meant to confuse collectors.

Rookie Materials Signatures

  • #152 Corey Seager - redemption card
  • #167 Frankie Montas - redemption card
  • #209 Julio Urias - redemption card
#196 Ross Stripling                      #202 Trayce Thompson

2016 Panini National Treasures Baseball - The Dodgers Booklet Cards

A couple of weeks ago Panini released their 2016 National Treasures Baseball card set, and I am only now able to share some pics of the Dodger cards found within it.  Go here for a complete checklist.  I am still working on gathering pics of the base cards, so I figured I start with photos of many of the Dodger booklet cards that are available.

Something of note, I've run into several cards that are not listing in the original checklist provided by Panini, so there could very well be more Dodger cards out there that we don't know about.  For instance, there is an Clayton Kershaw Stars Booklet Materials Signatures card available that is not found on their checklist.

Blog Kiosk: 8/15/2016 - Dodgers Links - Puig, Ethier, Magic and Kershaw

Check out who made it to the LA Coliseum for the Rams first preseason game in Los Angeles since coming back to California, via a pic tweeted by the NFL.  Clayton Kershaw, following an afternoon win at Dodger Stadium over the Pirates, 8-4, was spotted on the sidelines during the Rams victory over Dallas.

I wonder who he was rooting for.  Being a Texas native it wouldn't be surprise to find out that he's a Cowboys fan.  On the other hand, he did send the LA Rams players, coaches and personnel 200 bottles of Johnnie Walker Blue Label scotch whisky as a welcome gift to the Southland.

BTW, this past Sunday was Magic Johnson's birthday, so the team presented him with his own cake on the field.  Photo directly above via Jill Weisleder/LA Dodgers 2016Go here to check out more pics from yesterdays game from Jill and Jon SooHoo.  Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1914 Jake Daubert set a NL record with four sacrifices in one game.  In 1926 Babe Herman famously tripled into a double play.  Per a description at Dodgers.com:
With one out and the bases loaded, Herman hit a line drive off the right field wall and Hank DeBerry, the runner on third, scored easily. Dazzy Vance, the runner on second, rounded third, but stopped 30 feet past the bag and started back. Chick Fewster, the runner on first, was coming full steam around second and soon found himself at third with Vance.

Herman, meanwhile, oblivious to what was transpiring at third base, tore around the bases until he also was at third base. Both Fewster and Herman were tagged out, ending the inning.

"Everybody," Herman said years later about the play, "overlooks the fact that the run I knocked in on that play was the winning run."

Blog Kiosk: 12/26/2014 - Dodger Links - Some Odds and Ends

Pee Wee sure could fly!

Above is a vintage International News press photo taken by Sam Goldstein of Dodger shortstop Pee Wee Reese turning a double play against the Pirates at Ebbets Field on June 10, 1951.  The first inning double header was hit by outfielder Rocky Nelson to Jackie Robinson; who quickly flipped the ball to Pee Wee to get the lead runner - George Metkovich.  And as you can see, Reese sailed above the runner like a geese chasing a flock.  I found the photo on eBay.  Go here to check it out.

Below are some links to check out:
  • Have you always wanted to work for the Dodgers?  Now here's your chance.  Check out this job listing for an Administrative Assistant here.  It looks like a great opportunity for a recent graduate.
  • Harold Uhlman at Think Blue LA takes, "A look back at the 2014 Ogden Raptors."
The timing of a winning streak was a testament to the patience and determination of Ogden manager Jack. McDowell. The Raptors lost two of their best players by mid-season promotions to the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League. Despite losing outfielder Devan Ahart and pitcher Jose De Leon to the Loons McDowell managed to keep the team believing. Two days after both players were gone from the roster, Ogden began a streak by winning 12 of 14 games helping them to gain a playoff berth.

2014 Panini Classics Baseball - The Dodger Autograph, Relic and Insert Cards

Several weeks ago I introduced Panini America's 2014 Classics Baseball card set by sharing the Dodger base cards.  Unfortunately, I never got around to sharing photos from the rest of the set, so I will do that now.

There are a ton of old-tyme Dodgers in the set; including players you hardly ever see on cardboard nowadays, like George Kelly, Hack Wilson, Paul Waner, Eddie Stanky, Jim Gilliam and Billy Herman.

Check out all of the Dodger insert, relic and autograph cards below.  There are a bunch of them.  As you'll notice, I do not yet have pics of all of them yet.  So, if you happen to have a pic of an unseen card please pass that along to me.

Some Great Dodger Memorabilia at Lelands Auctions - Koufax, Ebbets Field, Nap Rucker and Jake Daubert

Yesterday, I shared some fantastic vintage Dodger photographs currently on auction at Lelands; including a panoramic 1935 team photograph featuring an historic Baseball player (Len Koeneche) whose story is typically only known by astute Baseball historians.  Today, I feature a bunch of other Dodger memorabilia items available at Lelands.  Check them out below.

Here is a fantastic portrait painted by Southern California native and lifelong Dodgers fan Samantha Wendell.  It has a feel of a Nicholas Volpe painting (the fellow who painted all those Union Oil portraits).
(Auction Link)

I love this next item.  Featured below is a cast-iron baseball that once decorated Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.  It was rescued from its demolition and kept for safe keeping.  It measures approximately 5.5" in diameter.  A plaque reads:
"EBBETS FIELD BROOKLYN N Y C APRIL 5, 1913 - FEBRUARY 23, 1960 CAST IRON WALL FIXTURE REMOVED DURING STADIUM DEMOLITION.
(Auction Link)

Here is an early advertising piece featuring a couple old-tyme Brooklyn Dodger stars - lefty pitcher Nap Rucker and first baseman Jake Daubert.  These pieces were made for Ide Silver Collars of Troy, NY, and includes the following testimonials:
"JAKE DAUBERT IN A 'CLAYMONT' MY COLLAR TROUBLES ENDED WHEN I COMMENCED WEARING IDE SILVER COLLARS. THEY'RE COMFORTABLE AND KEEP THEIR 'STORE LOOKS' FOR A LONG TIME." and "'NAP' RUCKER IN A 'BERTRON' IDE SILVER COLLARS BELONG IN THE BIG LEAGUES. THEY FILL EVERY COLLAR WANT THAT A MAN CAN ASK FOR."

2013 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions Set - Dodgers Cards

Earlier in the week, Upper Deck released their Goodwin Champions set, and unfortunately it is short of Dodger players.  Heck, I had to stretch a bit to find anybody to show, so I included some former players who you wouldn't normally consider Dodgers.  There is one exception, though.  Mark McGwire is in the set, and he is currently our batting coach.

The only player in the set who was a long-time Dodger is Jake Daubert, but I have yet to find an actual pic of this card.  He is #198, and it's is a "Super-Short-Printed" card.

79 Darryl Strawberry                                90 Mark McGwire

126 Kenny Lofton

UPDATE:  Here is card #198 of former Brooklyn Dodger/Robins Jake Daubert.

The below horizontal variation is extremely limited.  According to checklist one card from the 20 card subset can be found in approximately every 1,400 packs.

2013 Panini Golden Age - All the Dodgers Cards

Panini recently released their newest card set.  It is called Golden Age, and as the name suggest it takes a look at not only Baseball's past, but America's past, as well.  There are cards featuring athletes from many different sports, TV and film entertainers and news makers.  Some of the subjects include the cast from the Happy Days, Three Stooges, the Bad News Bears and Stan Lee.

Check out the Dodgers related cards below.  Directly below are the base cards.  The Jake Daubert is an example of a normal sized card, the remaining 4 Dodgers are their mini parallel versions.

Recent Brooklyn Dodgers eBay Buys

I thought I'd take this lazy Sunday afternoon to share a couple of recent eBay purchases in hopes of brightening your day.  After all, after once again witnessing the Dodgers lose in spectacular fashion I figured some vintage Dodgers might perk you up... Well, at least, it gave me a smile.

I recently came across a 3-card lot of 1922 Exhibits of Harry "Hi" Myers, Sherrod "Sherry" Smith and Walter "Dutch" Reuther for a steal of a price of $10.00 total.  These cards are about the size of a postcard.  As you can see, they are far from being in mint condition, but who cares?  They are over 90 years old and are just plain awesome.

---------------------

Hi Myers was a star outfielder during 11 seasons with the Brooklyn Robins.  In 1922 he hit a robust .317 with 89 RBI's and 82 runs scored.  Myers was known to be an effective top of the order batter and had the speed to match.  He was also a great negotiator.

After the 1916 season he sent a letter to Charles Ebbets (the Brooklyn owner) indicating that he would no longer be playing Baseball.  He claimed that his farm back home was doing quite well (it was just modest), and he could not in good conscious play ball when he could provide better for his family tending to the family business.

Seeing that Ebbets had several holdouts that offseason, he decided to visit each one in hopes of convincing them to sign a contract.  Knowing of Ebbets impending arrival, Myers visited his wealthier neighbors to ask to borrow their livestock and proceeded to plant them on his farm.  Seeing that Myers story about having a well-off farm were true, Ebbets decided he had to give in to his financial demands and quickly made a deal.

Sherry Smith was one of the better starting pitchers for the Brooklyn Robins.  He pitched in 7 seasons for Brooklyn; recording a accumulative ERA of 2.91 and a WAR of 11.5.  His one claim to Baseball fame was his work in Game 2 of the 1916 World Series.  The Brooklyn Robins faced off against the Boston Red Sox, and Smith was set to start against a young lefthander named Babe Ruth.  Via Baseball Alamac:
Through thirteen innings, both had allowed only six hits and one run each. In the bottom of the fourteenth, Dick Hoblitzell set the stage for a dramatic finish by drawing his fourth walk of the game. Duffy Lewis followed suite by sacrificing Hoblitzell into scoring position at second. With all his pieces in place, Red Sox manager Bill Carrigan prepared to checkmate his opponent by sending in Mike McNally as a pinch-runner and Del Gainor as a pinch-hitter. Gainor stepped up and delivered, driving in Hoblitzell and sealing Boston's 2-1 victory.
---------------------

Below is a second purchase I recently made on eBay.  It is a 1914 Baseball felt "Blanket" that was distributed in packs of Egyptienne Straights Cigarettes.  They measure a little over 5" square.  The player here is Brooklyn Robin, Jake Daubert.

2012 Panini National Treasures Baseball - Dodgers' Insert Cards

The parade of Dodgers' cards within Panini's 2012 National Treasures Baseball set doesn't want to stop.  This time, we take a look at the nickname variations to the base set and the All-Decade cards.  As you'll notice, the 'Common Nickname' variations use a different photo than their base card counterpart, and I suspect there are various parallels relics available (although, I have only seen one version of each Dodger so far).  The 'All Decade' cards are exactly what you expect.  They highlight the best ballplayers of each decade, and the "who's who" of Dodgers' greats are represented.

Check out some of the other Dodgers' 2012 National Treasures cards I've featured here.  Also, click any pic to embiggen.
