Blog Kiosk: 4/21/2016 - Dodgers Links - Maeda and Chase Utley

The old man can still play.

At 37 years of age, Chase Utley is proving that this dog still has some jump in his step.  He sparked a Dodger team by making key plays on the field and scoring the go ahead run in the 10th inning after singling and stealing second base to put him in scoring position.  Per Jon Cooper at MLB.com:
"George made us all aware that [Grilli] can be slow at times," Utley said. "That first pitch, he was pretty slow to the plate, and we took advantage of it."

Utley not only swiped the base, but he changed the tone of the inning. The former Braves closer walked the ensuing hitter, Corey Seager, on four pitches, and then he give up an RBI double to Justin Turner.

"It was huge," said Roberts, a prolific basestealer during his career. "Now Grilli's got to pitch Corey Seager really carefully, and then J.T. gets the double, and we just kept the line moving. So that stolen base changed the inning completely."
And the catalyst for all that was the man expected to play a backup role this year.  Instead, Utley has slashed .306/.370/.408/.779, and forced himself onto the everyday lineup.  Pic above via SportsNet LA on twitter.  Below are more links to check out:

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Full – Squad Workout #5

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

--------------------------
(Puig playing MLB 15, pic via his twitter)

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY: With spring showers pouring down in Camelback Ranch – Glendale, the Dodgers held their fifth full-squad workout of 2015, working in the batting cages while the coaching staff held a baserunning meeting and also talked about the new pace of game rules with position players. Clayton Kershaw, Brandon League, Chris Hatcher, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Joel Peralta, Joe Wieland, Ben Rowen, Ryan Buchter and Daniel Coulombe tossed regular bullpens.

FIVE-IN-A-ROW: Dodger Manager Don Mattingly announced today that he plans to start 2014 National League Most Valuable Player and Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw for the fifth consecutive year on Opening Day when the Dodgers face the San Diego Padres on April 6. Kershaw will become the second pitcher in Los Angeles history to start five consecutive Opening Days for the Dodgers, following Hall of Famer Don Sutton, who pitched seven consecutive Opening Days for the club (1972-78). Sutton and fellow Hall of Famer Don Drysdale (1958-61, 1963, 1965, 1969) share the mark for the most Opening Day starts in L.A. Dodger history with seven.

PLAY BALL: After declaring the starters for Dodgers’ first and second Cactus League games on Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5 against the White Sox at Camelback Ranch - Glendale, the Dodgers announced the pitchers who are scheduled to throw for each game. On March 4, left-hander Erik Bedard will start the game, followed by Carlos Frias, Juan Nicasio, Sergio Santos, Adam Liberatore and Josh Ravin. On March 5, Clayton Kershaw will start, followed by Joe Weiland, Brandon League, Chris Hatcher, Daniel Coulombe and Ryan Buchter.

WELCOME TO CBR: Dodgers broadcasters Charley Steiner, Jaime Jarrín and Jorge Jarrín arrived in Camelback Ranch today as they prepare to call the first Cactus League game on Wednesday, March 4 against the White Sox. The Four-time Emmy Award winner Steiner is entering his 11th season as play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers and will be broadcasting games on SportsNet LA and AM570 KLAC. Hall of Famer, Jaime Jarrín, is entering his 57th season in the Dodgers’ Spanish-language radio booth alongside his son Jorge, who will be new to the broadcast team on Univision America 1020 (KTNQ).

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!: The Dodgers would like wish Single-A Great Lakes Loons hitting coach and former Dodger Jay Gibbons a Happy Birthday. Gibbons returns to the Dodger organization following a nine-year playing career with Baltimore (2001-2007) and Los Angeles (2010-11). Gibbons compiled a .260 batting average to go along with 127 homers and 427 RBI in the big leagues, playing first base and the outfield. He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 14th round of the 1998 First-Year Player Draft.

Dodgers Let the Pups In - Woof Woof Woof

Yesterday's game opened with a... Bark!

The Dodgers held their annual dog walk at Dodger Stadium for "Pups in the Park," so numerous fans of the four-legged persuasion came out to celebrate.  There were small ones and big ones, brown ones and white ones, and all of them were ready to enjoy a day out with their owners.

Many were dressed in their best Dodger uniforms, and from all account they were all well-behaved.  Heck, I have some friends who could learn a thing or two from these canines.

Better yet, there are plenty of photos all over the 'net to help us enjoy the spectacle.  Dodger photographer Jon SooHoo put up a bunch of great pics that you can see here.  The photos above and directly below were taken by him.

And, here are some other great pics that I found all over the place.

With that mohawk I'd call him Puig's Punk Pug.

Check out these darling little doggies.

That must be Orel the Bulldog.

Hey there, Blue!

Hey there, big guy.

Smile, you're in the right-field pavilion.

Corgi's are so cute!

And, check out this great little video from the Dodgers.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 11/ Road Game 5

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.
--------------------------

BTW, ignore the Mariners noted above, Eric meant the Padres.

WEST VALLEY DIVISIONAL BATTLE: The Dodgers and Padres square off for the second of three meetings this spring, with the Dodgers looking to avenge last Friday’s loss at Camelback Ranch - Glendale. The clubs’ final Cactus League meeting will be on March 15 in Peoria. The Dodgers and Padres will meet 19 times during the regular season, with the first three coming on the Dodgers’ initial road trip, April 9-11 at PETCO Park. Last season, the Dodgers beat San Diego 11 of 18 times and had a 6-3 record on the road. If you’re counting down the days, the Dodgers are 28 days away from Opening Day vs. the Giants!
  • This morning, the Dodgers reassigned RHP Gregory Infante to minor league camp and the club now has 54 players in big league camp following the four reassignments on Sunday (Nick Evans, Kelvin De La Cruz, Ozzie Martinez and Dallas McPherson).
  • Dodger center fielder Matt Kemp will start in center field for the first time this spring. It’s only the Cactus League, but the ball might get bigger for Kemp when he sees the opposition. Kemp hit .406 (26-for-64) with seven homers and 20 RBI against the Padres last season and in his career is hitting .309 with 17 homers when facing the Friars.
BACK ON TRACK: The Dodgers downed the Indians, 5-1, on Sunday behind 3.0 strong innings from RHP Josh Beckett, who has tossed 5.0 scoreless innings this spring. OF and camp sensation Yasiel Puig belted his first homer of the spring, a three-run shot that provided the final margin. Puig’s .421 batting average ranks ninth among all National Leaguers this spring.
  • The Dodgers continue to lead the National League with both a .314 team batting average and a .398 on-base percentage through their first 10 Cactus League games.
CY GUY: Dodger left-hander Clayton Kershaw will make his third spring start this afternoon after giving up four earned runs in his first 5.0 Cactus League innings. Kershaw, the 2011 Cy Young Award winner, will make his third consecutive Opening Day start on April 1.
  • RHP Matt Guerrier, the most interesting man in the world, will take time off from making viral videos and toe the rubber for the third time this spring. Thus far, Guerrier has tossed 2.0 scoreless frames.
  • Non-roster invitee RHP Kevin Gregg has been impressive so far this spring, retiring all six batters he has faced.
  • RHP Shawn Tolleson will pitch in his third game this spring this afternoon. Tolleson has given up one run in 2.1 innings. Last year, the Texas native appeared in 40 games (37.2 innings pitched) and recorded 39 strikeouts.
  • LHP Paco Rodriguez will look to extend his scoreless innings’ streak to 3.0 this afternoon. Rodriguez starred for the University of Florida last season, but still found time to be the first member of the 2012 draft class to make the Major Leagues.
  • RHP Steve Ames, the winner of this Sunday’s Dodger Idol competition, surrendered two runs on three hits in his last outing on Thursday against the Angels. Ames fired a scoreless frame in his first outing of the spring on Feb. 24 against the White Sox.
(pic link: Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013)

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE: Over in Peoria, the following minor leaguers will suit up for the Dodgers today: IF Rafael Ynoa (#82), IF/OF Rusty Ryal (#83), OF Matt Angle (#84), RHP Sean White (#88) and LHP Fabio Castro (#87).

CAN’T WAIT: Dodger legends Ron Cey and Tommy Davis will arrive Friday, March 8 and spend a few days in camp working with the squad.

CLASSIC FEVER: This morning Camelback Ranch was abuzz as the World Baseball Classic’s Team USA took over the visiting clubhouse and will face the White Sox today. Old Friends Joe Torre, Larry Bowa, Rick Lembo and Chris Romanello chatted up the Dodgers’ players, coaches and staff.
  • Tomorrow, a split-squad of Dodgers will face off against Adrian Gonzalez, Luis Cruz, Javy Guerra, Fernando Valenzuela, Yvonne Carrasco and the rest of Team Mexico at 1:05 pm at Camelback Ranch – Glendale.
THE CAPTAIN HAS ARRIVED: The Dodgers would like to welcome Spanish language broadcaster and co-host of Dodger Talk, Jorge Jarrín to Camelback Ranch - Glendale. Jarrín takes over for David Vassegh as the man getting sound for AM 570 Fox Sports LA and will also call several games for the Dodgers’ webcast, including tomorrow’s battle with Team Mexico alongside Rick Monday. Vassegh left camp to be with his wife and await the birth of their first child. Unfortunately, that means he will miss his idols in action as Petros and Money take their show on the road this Thursday and Friday from the booth at Camelback Ranch - Glendale.

  • Wow!  Check this out.  At Slate, they feature a Baseball that was initially found in 1862 at Shiloh during the Civil War.  The article also speaks of a new online Baseball Museum called 'The National Pastime' that will be unveiling some Baseball memorabilia on Opening Day.
