Check out this 1939 spring training AP press photo featuring three Dodgers' wearing Brooklyn pinstripes as they prepare for the upcoming season (eBay auction link - please ignore the watermark). I just love their socks and imagine that there's a whole lot of red in there. Per the descriptor on the reverse:

Clearwaterm FLA. March 9th -- These three sentries are likely choices to patrol the outfield for the Brooklyn Dodgers this season. Left to right: Oscar "Ox" Eckhardt, up from the Missions of the Coast Leaguel; Freddie Lindstrom, former Chicago Cub; and John Cooney, who came from Indianapolis of the American Association. Cooney has been showing well in spring practice and Eckhardt hit .395 last season.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1982 the Dodgers raise their 1981 World Series banner at Dodger Stadium. In 1989 Orel Hershiser's consecutive scoreless innings streak ends when he give up a run in the first inning to the Reds during his first start of the new season. In 1996 Chan Ho Park becomes the first pitcher born in Korea to win a Major League game. He threw four inning of shutout relief to earn a 3-1 victory over the Cubs. In 2002 Japanese hurler Kazuhisa Ishii made his Major League debut against the Rockies at Dodger Stadium, and proceeded to throw 5.2 innings of scoreless ball to earn his first Major League win. In 2004 Dodger third baseman Adrian Beltre becomes the 36th player in history to hit 100 home runs before the age of 25. He hit it off of Antonio Osuna of the Padres.

Current and Former Dodgers' are Starting to Speak -- On Twitter

On Monday the Dodgers released what is likely to be their only statement related to the current scandal rocking the game. They said:

“All clubs have been asked by Major League Baseball not to comment on today’s punishment of the Houston Astros as it’s inappropriate to comment on discipline imposed on another club. The Dodgers have also been asked not to comment on any wrongdoing during the 2017 World Series and will have no further comment at this time.”

Clearly, we shouldn't expect to hear anything more from the ownership (and I assume the coaching staff) about the sign-stealing mess. That said, this edict does not extend to the players. Several current and former Dodgers' are raising their voice on twitter and it's worth making note of it.

Featured above is a October 6, 1963 UPI telephoto of Sandy Koufax celebrating the Dodgers World Series sweep of the New York Yankees (eBay auction link). Per the description:

Los Angeles Dodgers star southpaw pitcher Sandy Koufax hoists a champagne toast in dressing room here 10/6, after the Dodgers won the 4th Series game in a row to give them the title. The Dodgers handed New York its first 4-game shutout in 28 trips to the classic.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1958 the Dodgers officially released soon-to-be Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese. He would then become a Dodgers coach for the 1959 season, then enter broadcasting as a color-man for CBS from 1960 to 1965. In 2015 the Dodgers signed free agent starter Scott Kazmir to a three-year, $48 million contract. He would have a decent first season -- going 10-6 with a 4.56 ERA in 26 starts -- but would end the season on the DL due to hip issues and would not pitch again.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1945 Dodger President Branch Rickey announced that the team has signed two black ballplayers, shortstop Jackie Robinson and pitcher John "Needle Nose" Wright, to play with Brooklyn's Triple A team in Montreal. In 1981 the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series, 5-4. Fernando Valenzuela threw a nine-hit complete game. In 1998 Davey Johnson is named the manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ryu is an 'Ace' right now. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:

“I can’t say enough about Hyun-Jin and what he’s done for us,” Roberts said. “He’s off to obviously a tremendous start. To watch him work as a technician, it was masterful. It really was.”

Hyun-Jin came so close to throwing a no-hitter last night. He went 8.1 scoreless innings before giving up a double to first baseman Gerardo Parra, and now has a scoreless innings streak of 24 innings.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1947 the famous 'embrace that shook the baseball world' occurred at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The Dodgers, facing the Reds for the first time this season at their home stadium, witness a barrage of racial slurs directed at Jackie Robinson. Team captain Pee Wee Reese, seeing this, engages with Jackie on the field and then put his arm around his shoulder, a gesture that stuns and silences the crowd (or so the story goes). In 1952 Vin Scully experienced something incredible. As a youth he dreamed of being a broadcaster. A classmate named Larry Miggins shared a similar dream with him. He wanted to play Major League Baseball. So on this day Miggins, now a outfielder with the Cardinals, was at-bat with Vin Scully calling the game for the Dodgers in Brooklyn, and proceeded to hit his first career home run in front of his close friend. Per an SI story (2016):

“I remember I said, ‘Larry, when we get out of here, what do you want to do?’ And he said, ‘I’d love to be a big league ballplayer.’ “And I said, ‘I wonder what those odds are.’ And then I said, ‘Well, you know, I’d like to be big league broadcaster. I wonder what those odds are.’ “And then I said, ‘How about this one for a long shot: How about you play, I broadcast, you hit a home run?’ And we said, ‘The odds, no one would be able to calculate that!’”

At one point, Walter O'Malley had dreams about building a domed stadium in Brooklyn. Featured above is a May 11, 1957 AP press photo featuring O'Malley showing off his design (eBay Auction Link). Strangely, with him are New York Giants president Horace Stoneham, San Francisco Mayor George Christopher and SF County Cupervisor Francis McCarty. As you know, the Dodgers would soon announce their intention of leaving the Brooklyn borough for Los Angeles.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1941 the Dodgers traded for soon to be Hall of Famer Arky Vaughan from the Pirates in exchange for Pete Coscarart, Luke Hamlin, Babe Phelps and Jimmy Wasdell. In 1998 the Dodgers signed free agent starting pitcher Kevin Brown to a seven year $105 million contract -- thus becoming the first $100 million man in Baseball. In 2012 the Dodgers received Skip Schumaker in a trade with the Cardinals -- sending Jake Lemmerman to St. Louis in return.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1940 the Dodgers made one of the biggest trades in their history. They received 1937 Triple Crown winner Joe "Ducky" Medwick and pitcher Curt Davis from the Cardinals for outfielder Ernie Koy, pitcher Carl Doyle, two minor leaguers and $125k in cash (a huge sum in those days). The Dodgers would win the pennant the following season for the first time since 1920. In 1955 Don Newcombe, having won his first ten decisions of the season, lost his first game of the year when Brooklyn loses to the Cubs, 9-5. In 2005 first baseman Hee-Seop Choi hit home runs in his first three at-bats this evening against the Twins to propel the Dodgers over Minnesota, 4-3. There's nothing better than a talking horse to distract you from the season. Featured above is Mr. Ed, his straight-talking co-star Alan Young and the great Sandy Koufax at Dodger Stadium in 1963.

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1947 then Pirates slugger Hank Greenberg reached out to Jackie Robinson during a game at Forbes Field. While standing on first base he asked Jackie if he was hurt during a collision with him earlier in the game and then says, "Stick in there. You're doing fine. Keep your chin up." Knowing that Greenberg knew first hand the difficulties he had been facing, due to his own Jewish heritage, Jackie named him his "diamond hero." In 1978 Dodger slugger Lee Lacy hit his third consecutive home run as a pinch-hitter -- becoming the first player to have ever done so.

Blog Kiosk: 5/10/2017 - Dodgers Links - Justin Marks, Wood, Urias and Austin Barnes

Austin Barnes was more than happy to take a celebration on-field bath after last nights game. As you surely know, Barnes came off the bench in the 10th inning of a 3-3 tie to drive in pinch-runner Ross Stripling for the wining run. Per Rowan Kavner at Dodger Insider:

“You have to be ready to hit right away,” Barnes said in that situation. “Giving away strikes, taking at-bats like you would if you were starting, it’s a little tough. It’s one AB, so being ready to hit everything in the strike zone is kind of important.”

On another note, Julio Urias was a beast. He had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning, but left the game soon thereafter with a no-decision. Overall, he recorded five strike outs, issued two walks, gave up only a double to McCutchen on 95 pitches. Per Ken Gurnick and Steve Dilbeck at MLB.com:

"Very efficient," said Pirates manager Clint Hurdle of Urias. "He kept his fastball velocity up all night. His changeup is a very effective pitch, and he threw it on both sides of the plate. Impressive."

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 1955 Don Newcombe threw a complete game shutout against the Cubs while facing the minimum of 27 batters. He allowed just one hit, to second baseman Gene Baker, who would subsequently be caught stealing. In 1966 the Dodgers sent 1955 World Series hero Johnny Podres to the Tigers as part of an conditional deal. In 1968 the Dodgers signed free agent infielder Ken Boyer. At the age of 37 the aging All-Star would slash .271/.317/.403/.720 with 60 hits, six home runs and 41 RBI's that season. In 1996 Tommy Lasorda managed his 3,000th major league game. It was against the Cardinals, and the Dodgers defeated them in twelve innings, 3-2. In 2005 the Dodgers signed free agent infielder Óscar Robles. He would go on to have a good season in Blue; slashing .272/.332/.368/.700 with 99 hits, five homers and 34 RBI's.

Blog Kiosk: 5/28/2016 - Dodgers Links - All About Urias

That didn't go as planned.

Julio Urias was thrown to the wolves and got bit.  He lasted just 2.2 innings against the Mets; giving up three runs, five hits and striking out three.  Having given up an uncharacteristic four walks, Urias struggled in every inning he pitched. In fact, many of his pitches were up in the strike zone.  No doubt he was showing signs of nervousness.  Via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:

"I was," he admitted. "I'm not going to lie, when I went out there, I started thinking of everything I've had to go through to get here. But when I was on the mound, I was able to settle down, be a little more comfortable. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the results we wanted."

He added further:

"There was a big difference," Urias said of the quality of hitters. "They were looking for specific pitches, and sometimes I tried to fool them and I wasn't able to. Today, it didn't work out, but I'm going to continue to work hard and try to get results."

• This Day in Dodgers History: In 2001 Paul LoDuca records six hits in an eleven inning victory over the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.  His feat tied an NL record for hits in an extra-inning affair.  In 2011 several sections in the reserve level at Dodger Stadium are evacuated due to a small fire in an storage area.

Blog Kiosk: 3/23/2015 - Dodger Links - Ryu is Still Ailing

The Dodgers spring is in full bloom in the vintage International News press photo above.  It is dated March 15, 1945 and was taken in Bear Mountain - their Spring home during much of WWII.  It says on the reverse:

DODGERS OPEN SPRING TRAINING.  Bear Mountains.....Ed Stevens covers first base and takes a toss as the Brooklyn Dodgers open spring training at Bear Mountain.  Stevens is the first baseman who may replace Schultz.  Manager Leo Durocher is coaching from the rear and giving his men tips on the correct way to do it.  "IT" being everything pertaining to baseball."  

Obviously, the description above is for a different picture.  So I ask, who the the gentleman in the photo above.  Anyone know?

Yet, many people, those who I know personally and those I just come across in social media, still have no idea what it is that makes me collect. They ignore my enthusiasm or question my interests. Why would I want to waste money on picture cards?

Many of these people aren't sports fans. They don't understand and they don't want to understand.  "It's just sports," they say. "He'll always be that way." It's kind of like being patted on the head. But I don't get upset about it.

But I think I have a reason that might open the eyes of some of those people.

• It's not looking good for Hyun-Jin Ryu.  Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider has a great rundown of all the various stories covering his issues.  Long story short, he will not be on the Opening Day roster and is in Los Angeles today to meet with team physician Dr. Neal El Attrache. Cross your fingers, folks!

If you're heading out to the ballgames in San Antonio this weekend at the Alamodome as a part of "Big League Weekend" then you're in for a treat.  Former Dodger and potential Hall of Famer Jeff Kent will be singing free autographs prior to the start of Friday's game between the Dodgers and Rangers.  Go here for information.  I do not know the exact time of his appearance.  BTW, former Ranger Ruben Sierra will also be signing free autographs prior to Saturday's game.

Their appearances are part of a sports collectors convention that is happening concurrent with the ballgames at the stadium.  It is located in the South End Club Level of the Alamodome, and admission is free with a game ticket.
