Blog Kiosk: 1/22/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

I know I've shared this photo before, but it's so great it's worth another look. This vintage 8/16/1938 ACME press photo is available at RMY Auctions. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Dodgers' Quartette Eludes the Heat with Song -- New York City -- Despite the broiling sun, this Brooklyn Dodgers' quartette burst into song and fogot about the heat as they relaxed at the Polo Grounds, August 16th, where the Dodgers beat the Giants, 7-3. Left to Right: Tuck Stainback, Buddy Hassett, Kiki Cuyler and Babe Ruth.
Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1988 seven ballplayers are declared free agents as a result of an Players Association's 1985 collusion lawsuit against the owners. Kirk Gibson is one of those players, and this event would eventually lead to him signing with the Dodgers seven days later. The rest, as they say, is history. In 2007 the Dodgers signed amateur free agent Pedro Báez as a 19-year old third baseman out of the Dominican Republic. He would eventually convert to a relief pitcher in 2013.

Current and Former Dodgers' are Starting to Speak -- On Twitter

On Monday the Dodgers released what is likely to be their only statement related to the current scandal rocking the game. They said:
“All clubs have been asked by Major League Baseball not to comment on today’s punishment of the Houston Astros as it’s inappropriate to comment on discipline imposed on another club. The Dodgers have also been asked not to comment on any wrongdoing during the 2017 World Series and will have no further comment at this time.”
Clearly, we shouldn't expect to hear anything more from the ownership (and I assume the coaching staff) about the sign-stealing mess. That said, this edict does not extend to the players. Several current and former Dodgers' are raising their voice on twitter and it's worth making note of it.

2019 Panini Diamond Kings - Dodgers' Inserts Part 2

Here is a last look at some of the Dodger inserts found in packs of Panini's 2019 Diamond Kings brand. Unfortunately, there are quite a few inserts cards that I do not yet have pics of. I will do my best to update this post when those photos become available.

2019 Topps Series 1 Baseball - Inserts Galore, Part One

Now that you've seen the Dodger base cards, here are several of the inserts you can find in packs. First, I thought I would share the handful of Dodgers found in Topps' 2019 Silver Pack 1984 Chrome promotion. Available at local hobby stores or online hobby retailers, you will receive a silver pack of four cards for each hobby box purchased. A jumbo hobby box should get you two silver packs. Go here for a complete checklist of promo cards.

2018 Topps Archives - Hobby Boxes - The Dodgers Rookie History Autographs

As you may know, this seasons Topps Archives brand had retail and hobby boxes released on different dates - over two months apart. Why? I dunno. What I do know it that there is one insert set found in the hobby packs not found in the retail packs. Below is a look at the three Dodger cards found in that insert set. Featured below are three Dodgers' in the Topps Rookie History Autographs set. Go here to check out all of my past post on this brand.

2018 Topps Luminaries - All the Dodgers Cards

Following on the heals of their super high-end brand "Diamond Icons", Topps released another high-end product called 2018 Luminaries last week. A box includes a single pack with one encased, signed and numbered card to 15 or less for a bit over $200. Go here for a complete checklist.

Below is a checklist, as well as, several pics of some of the Dodger cards. Unfortunately, it appears both Clayton Kershaw and Sandy Koufax cards all come with a redemption. Furthermore, the directly below Mike Piazza "Home Run King" autograph cards come in two different versions, and I am uncertain which card numbers correspond to which card.

Blog Kiosk: 4/17/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I love that Matt Kemp is proving that he still has plenty in the tank. Per Jay Paris at MLB.com:
"I'm just happy to be in a uniform playing for the team that I started with,'' Kemp said. "My main focus is just to help this team any way I can to win games and get back to the World Series.
It's doubly good that Ryu is doing the same. Ryu went six strong innings, striking out 9, and allowing just two runs on three hits. Per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA:
“I was really happy with my outing tonight,” Ryu said. “Those couple of years were tough.”
BTW, you should check out Jon Weisman's blog post from this morning pointing out how Ryu's comeback this season is something to behold (link here). Photo above via @Dodgers on twitter. Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History: In 1934 Casey Stengel makes his managerial debut as the Dodger skipper. Brooklyn defeated the Boston Braves, 8-7. In 1947 Jackie Robinson recorded his first major league hit -- a bunt single down the third base line off of Boston Braves hurler Glenn Elliott. In 1955 Roberto Clemente, who started out as a Dodger prospect, singles off of Dodger pitcher Johnny Podres for his first major league hit. In 1956 future Hall of Famer Don Drysdale pitched in his very first game. He threw one inning of hitless relief in the ninth inning of a losing game. In 1994 the Dodgers belted 19 runs against the hapless Pirates to tie a club record for most runs in a game. In 2013 Clayton Kershaw strikes out his 1,000th batter of his career -- the victim was Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso.

New to the Collection: 1993 Friendship Series in Taiwan Program

I have absolutely no recollection of this occurring. Thankfully, I was able to acquire a fun little pamphlet that tells me a lot about it. Featured here is a program for the three-game 1993 Dodgers Friendship Series played in late-October against the CPBL (Taiwanese Professional Baseball League) All-Stars.

As you'll recall, 1993 was a dismal year for the Dodgers. They finished the season at .500 (81-81) -- 23 games behind the then formidable Atlanta Braves. So I'd imagine an overseas trip to Asia was a desirable respite for the guys. In fact, nearly all the big names came along -- Brett Butler, Raul Mondesi, Darryl Strawberry, Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Pedro Martínez, Ramon Martínez, Orel Hershiser and manager Tommy Lasorda. Heck, even our poet laureate, Vin Scully, visited Taiwan to comment on the games.

Check out some pics of the program below. Click on any pic to embiggen.

Blog Kiosk: 3/24/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Spring Odds and Ends

Blog Kiosk: 1/25/2016 - Dodgers Links - Press Conference, Quakes New Logo and an Mysterious Vintage Cap

Here is one last item from the current Lelands Auction that I thought was worth mentioning.  Featured above is a vintage photograph of the empty stalls within the Dodgers clubhouse.  As you can see, Roy Campanella's uniform is prominently displayed among throngs of Dodger flannels on wire hangers.  Check out the auction here.

Initially, I assumed that this photo was taken in the Brooklyn Dodgers clubhouse -- pre-1958.  But now, I'm not so sure. I say this because of a certain ball-cap above Campy's jersey.  Do you see it?

That's a "LA" hat with the "L" crossed with the "A" just like the current Dodgers logo, but the color scheme is all wrong.  The "L" is a dark color (unsure which considering this is an B&W pic) and the "A" is clearly white.  Heck, it almost looks like the caps the old Los Angeles Angels of the PCL wore before the Dodgers came to town, but again the color scheme is wrong.  Those hats, if I remember correctly, had a white "L" and a red "A".

So, what the heck is that hat?  Were did it come from?  And, was this photo actually taken in the Dodgers clubhouse in the Coliseum?  Best yet, is this photo from Roy Campanella Day at the Coliseum -- when 93,000 fans jammed the stadium in 1958?

I dunno, and I don't know if we'll ever find out.  Unfortunately, the photograph itself has no relevant markings on the reverse to let us know.  If you happen to have any insight please pass that along.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers History:  In 1981 in Game 5 of the World Series the Dodgers won their thrid straight game against the Yankees to take 3-2 series lead.  Pedro Guerrero and Steve YEager hit back-to-back homers, and Jerry Reuss pitched a 2-1 complete game for the victory.

Blog Kiosk: 4/2/2015 - Dodger Links - New OKC Mascots, Pedro Martinez, and DeLeon

The Dodgers new AAA club in Oklahoma City just revealed their official team mascots by tweeting the graphic above.  Check it out.  They are cattle dogs and they go by the name of Brooklyn and Brix.  You can find out more about them here.
"When people think of the Dodgers, they think of Dodger Dogs, of course," OKC Dodgers President/General Manager Michael Byrnes said. "We think that Brooklyn and Brix are a fun, new twist on that connotation."
Below are some links to check out:

Grandal walked away quite impressed after standing in the box against Gonzalez. He said that Gonzalez was sitting in the low 90′s, reminding him of “Urias without polish” — more typical of a 19-year-old’s repertoire, but with tons of promise.
When I came in I was throwing five pitches, now I pitch three. I just focus on the quality of those three pitches and feel more comfortable. I’m pretty sure that losing weight helped me out a lot, I’m more flexible and able to throw the ball down in the zone. But the mental game is the key, for me that’s key. I didn’t have that last year at all.

No, it's not.

The 10 Best Dodgers' Cards of 2014

With the 2014 collecting season officially at a close I figured it was time to share my picks for "The 10 Best Dodgers' Cards of 2014." This is the third consecutive year I've put together this list.  Go here to check out my past two "10 Best" list: 2013 & 2012.

There were 50 different card sets to go through, so I had a heck of a time narrowing my picks down to just ten cards.  No doubt I missed some of your favorites.  This time I tried to just focus on only base cards or inexpensive inserts, and I stayed far away from autographs and relic cards (save the "Honorable Mentions" at the very bottom).

Take a look at my choices below, and let me know if you agree.  Better yet, what would be your picks?  Click on any pic to embiggen.

#10

There is no better way to start this list than with Topps 2014 Opening Day set and the "Superstar Celebrations" insert card of Yasiel Puig sliding into home.  This card immortalizes Puig's very first walk-off hit (a home run) in a game against the Cincinnati Reds on July 28, 2013.  The score was 0-0 in the bottom of the 11th inning and right-hander Curtis Partch was on the mound.  On an 0-1 count with the bases empty Puig unloaded, flipped his bat and slid into home to put an exclamation point on his endeavors.  Watch a video of the event here.  Go here to check out all of the other Dodger cards in this set.

Some of you might think I'm crazy for including this card, but I just couldn't help it.  The card is so goofy... So brilliantly ugly... So fantastically stupid... That I couldn't help but think of it as being so bad, it's awesome.  Featured here is Upper Deck's Goodwin Champions card of Ron Cey, "The Penguin" in a tuxedo.  Get it?  Go here to check out the other Dodger cards in this set.

Plenty of Dodger Goodies at Goldin Auctions - Pedro's Dodger Glove and Jackie's Contract for Souvenir Baseballs

Goldin's 2015 winter auction is current ongoing and it includes so many great Dodger memorabilia items.  Check out my favorites below.

With his recent inclusion in the Baseball Hall of Fame this glove couldn't come to the market at a more appropriate time.  Featured below is purported to be an early 90's game-used glove of Pedro Martinez.  You'll notice bright Dodger Blue leather can be seen throughout.
(Auction Link)

Here is a fantastic original vintage photograph taken by legendary photographer Charles Conlon of Dodger Hall or Famer Wee Willie Keeler.
(Auction Link)

I thought this was a fun little contract between Jackie Robinson and an facsimile autograph baseball manufacturer.  This was penned in 1948, after Jackie was named the Rookie of the Year for the 1947 season, and it promises to pay Jackie the sum of $0.01 for each baseball sold with his signature stamped on it.
(Auction Link)

Here is another Dodger World Series trophy.  This time it's from the 1981 season and it was originally given to Dodger executive Bob Schenz.  As you may know, Schenz worked for the club for 30-years and was primarily responsible for team travel.

Below is an original painting of Jackie Robinson playing football for UCLA by famed Baseball artist Dick Perez.

Blog Kiosk: 1/9/2014 - Dodger Links - Mattingly, Rollins and Pedro Martinez

Let's hope we get to experience one of these later this year - a World Series version.  Featured above is a vintage ACME press photo dated October 4, 1949 that I ran into on eBay.  Go here to check out the auction.  Per the captions attached to the reverse:
"DODGERS' VICTORY PARADE.  Brooklyn, N.Y.:  Motorcade bearing members of the National League Champion Brooklyn Dodgers makes its way down Flatbush Avenue to the cheers of thousands of fans.  The baseball heroes received an official welcome at borough hall on the eve of the World Series."
Below are some links to check out:
"I just feel it's more of a team," said Mattingly. "The club last year won 94 games. We were a little crazy, but that's who we were. Nothing wrong with that. But I think the pieces will fit together better [in 2015]."
“My first question [to Dodgers manager Don Mattingly] was about leadership; What was the leadership in the clubhouse? Who does what? Who’s quiet? Who speaks out?” Rollins said. “And he gave me the run down and pretty much there letting me know how he wants me to fit in and what my role should be, not on the field but in the clubhouse, and trying to be the glue that holds everything together.”
"Well, Ramon was my hero," Pedro Martinez said. "I used to carry Ramon's bag to the different fields where he played before he was a pro. I just wanted to see my brother play. My brother was a super, super player."

Blog Kiosk: 1/8/2015 - Dodger Links - Jimmie Rollins and Another Kershaw Award

Yesterday was National Bobblehead Day, so in celebration the Dodgers unveiled their first bobble of the upcoming 2015 season.  It is Clayton Kershaw's Cy Young/MVP bobble that will be given out to fans on Tuesday, May 12th.  Check out a pic of it above.  Graphic via @Dodgers on twitter.

Below are some links to check out:
  • Have you always wanted to work for the Dodgers?  Do you have experience in video work.  Check out this job listing by the Dodgers for a Junior Producer/Editor here.
  • Clayton Kershaw & Mike Trout were named 2014 Sportsmen of the Year by the Los Angeles Sports Council.  Per a press release:
The Los Angeles Sports Council has named Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw as the 2014 Sportsmen of the Year. Each player won the Most Valuable Player Award in their respective league, which is the first time an Angel and a Dodger have been so recognized in the same year.

The pair will be honored during the 10th Annual LA Sports Awards, presented by Coca-Cola, which will be held on Sunday, March 15 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The LA Sports Awards are presented annually by the Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.
This is the second time Kershaw has won the award and he is the first two-time winner.  He was named the Sportsmen of the Year in 2011.  You can check out the LA Sports Council website here.
"There was only one place I wanted to go if I left Philadelphia and that was Los Angeles -- a place that has history, a place that wants to win, and I wanted to be a part of something special and somehow have an impact on that," Rollins said. "It wasn't happening in Philly at the moment, so I'm not surprised. I'm just glad it happened."
The photo on the right was taken by Dodger photographer Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015. Go here to check out some photos from Jon SooHoo of Rollins' press conference yesterday.
  • Here's a video of the $1Mil appraisal of a 19th Century Baseball collection that aired on the Antique Roadshow earlier this week.  What a fantastic find and a great story.  BTW, the appraisal is likely way too high.  The scorecards (the pics with ornate borders) are not one-of-kind and are poorly trimmed - known as Mort Rogers Scorecards.  The CDV's, on the other hand, are scarce.  Also, the autographed letter is just awesome.

Blog Kiosk: 1/7/2015 - Dodger Links - Pedro, Piazza and McCarthy

In honor of his election to the Hall of Fame yesterday, Dodger photographer Jon SooHoo shared a handful of photos from his archive featuring Pedro Martinez; including the above pic of Pedro with his brother Ramon from 1993.  Go here to check out more photos from him.  He even shares some shots of Randy Johnson; who was a student and photographer for the school paper at USC before turning pro.

Below are some links to check out:
"I can only say that there's been a lot of great players throughout history that have had to wait their turn," Piazza said last month. "Joe DiMaggio had three ballots. Yogi Berra had three ballots. And that's part of the process.

"For me, it's not really my place, I feel, to start campaigning. I can only say that I'm proud of my work and I'm proud of my career. I'll put my numbers against a lot of players in history, and I feel that's all I can do."
"That was the result of the negativity around me, telling me, 'No, you can't,' when I knew I could," Martinez said Tuesday. "That transformed my mind and my body."
      • Brandon McCarthy makes me laugh, via a tweet from yesterday:

Congrats to Pedro, Big Unit, Biggio and Smoltz - A Look at Pedro Dodger Rookie Cards

As you know by now, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Craig Biggio and John Smoltz have been elected to the 2015 Class of the Baseball Hall of Fame.  Congrats!

Not a bad pick in the bunch.  Go here to check out the BBWAA story and below is the tally for all players receiving at least 50% of the vote.

Unfortunately, Mike Piazza missed the cut by the smallest of margins - 28 votes.  He received 384 votes for a 69.9%.  Entry required 75% of the vote.  I suspect he'll cross that bridge next season.

I also wanted to make note of the induction of Pedro Martinez.  As you know, he began his professional career as a Dodger, but was traded away in 1993.  Being the younger brother of then staff ace Ramon Martinez, it would've been nice to see the duo pitch together for most of their careers.  Instead, Dodger fans are left to ponder what could have been.  Since his rookie cards all feature him in Dodger Blue I thought I would share pics of them all;  including minor league cards.  Check them out below.

Here is his first minor league card - 1990 Sports Pro, Great Falls Dodgers #12

Blog Kiosk: 11/25/2014 - Dodger Links - Editorializing the Dodgers

Here is a fantastic ACME Press Photo, circa 1940, from high up in the rafters of Ebbets Field.  I ran into this on eBay.  Check out the auction here.

On a side note, I am more than pleased with the current moves the Dodger front office is making.  They are measured, deliberate and necessary changes meant to provide depth in areas that are lacking with the club.  Not only that, several of the new Dodger players appear to have some upside that may translate well if given different roles.  No doubt they are gambles, but they appear to be worthwhile.

In the past, the Dodgers tried going the veteran route - figuring their money would solve any problems.  They went after old horses with an easy to understand history, but they got burned.  Soon, fans and the press complained.  Now they are choosing to go a different route by trying to find a competitive advantage by taking some risk... And still you complain?

None of these recent moves are flashy or headline grabbing, and I don't think that the current leadership cares about any of that - and neither should you.  Heck, you never should have built up the expectation that the Dodgers were going to do something major to begin with.  They were never going to sign Russell Martin.  Hanley Ramirez was always going to be allowed to go elsewhere.  And you shouldn't expect the Dodgers to sign a Lester or trade for Cole.

What you should expect is some resolution to the outfield situation.  Someone or more will get traded, and I do not believe Kemp will be that man.  He has significant value (given his 2014 second half he would make a bundle in todays free agent market), and unless another team is willing to pony up he will remain in Blue.  Instead, we'll see a trade that includes cash and some minor prospects.

We are in a new Dodger era - an era that does not include trying to be the Yankees of the West.  Instead, we are a Dodger franchise set on the intention of playing it smart.  We have the cash, the brains and now the will to make it all happen.  Don't sully that by giving yourself false expectations of the future.  What you want is not the same thing as what we need.

Below are some links to check out:
It’s quite possible they’ll live with the in-house options, giving Erisbel Arruebarrena (who will earn his $25 million by 2017 whether he’s in the big leagues or minors) first crack at it. Miguel Rojas will be standing by if he flounders. The Dodgers’ defense would improve significantly, but the offensive drop-off from Hanley to either of those guys would be vast.
        • Listen to the most recent episode of Dodger Talk with David Vassegh and Kevin Kennedy, here.  Dodger GM Farhan Zaidi joins them at about the 22:30 minute mark.  He mentions that one of their focuses will be to find under-the-radar tough-luck starters to convert into relievers.  I think this is the basis for the recent trades for Mike Bolsinger and Juan Nicasio.
        • Via Mike Petriello at Dodgers Digest, "Juan Nicasio, Fascinating Relief Project."
Though Nicasio would be at the moment likely the team’s fifth starter behind Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-jin Ryu, and Dan Haren, I’m really not interested in him in that role, and I think we all know the Dodgers will move to add another starter. But as a reliever, a two-pitch guy who can touch 95 in short stints? Well, that’s fascinating, really, because I’ve long loved the idea of taking mediocre starters who don’t have a good enough third pitch or velocity to survive in the rotation and turning them into relief assets. I’m not suggesting that Nicasio will be Wade Davis, but you get the idea — it’s the exact same thing.
