Blog Kiosk: 11/14/2017 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends
Check out this fantastic photo tweeted out by Alex Cheremeteff. Dated to 5/29/1953, it features several old-tyme Dodgers ushering in a new season for the Uptown Little League at Kennard Field, Pittsburgh. On the top row are (from L-R) Roy Campanella, Gair Allie, Jackie Robinson, Joe Black, Carlos Bernier, Sam Narron, and Ronald Gray holding shoes on left. Photo was taken by Pittsburgh photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris during his 40-year career with the Pittsburgh Courier. I also ran into another photo of Harris' from this day located in the archives of the Carnegie Museum of Art that you can check out on the right.Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 1979 the Dodgers signed free agent starting pitcher David Goltz to a six-year $3MM contract. The former eight-year Twins veteran went 9-19 with a 4.25 ERA in three season with the team before being release in 1982.

With Spring around the corner I can't help but be excited when I see a vintage spring training photograph like the one above. (eBay Auction Link) Featured are five Dodger pitchers showing off for the camera while training at Dodgertown, dated February 25, 1953. It was taken by noted International News and soon-to-be Sports Illustrated photographer Herb Scharfman. Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Posing prettily here at the Brooklyn Dodgers Vero Beach camp are the five top flingers of the Dodgers/ In Front: Russ Meyer, latest acquisition; and Carl Erskine (right). Rear: (from left) Joe Black, Billy Loes and Preacher Roe.Below are more links to check out:
- This Day in Dodgers History: In 2011 the Dodgers signed veteran free agent outfielder Gabe Kapler as a non-roster invitee. Unfortunately, he didn't make the team and would subsequently be released at the end of March. As you know, he would soon retire and make his mark in the Baseball front office.

Blog Kiosk: 10/31/2016 - Dodgers Links - Congrats, Kenley!
Here is a fantastic vintage photo of soon-to-be Dodger star hurler Joe Black that I ran into at Hake's auctions. (Auction Link) It was taken following an impressive winter season effort where he lead the Cuban League (1951-52) in both wins and strike outs. As you can see, a makeshift crown was placed on his head to commemorate this achievement.
As you may know, Joe joined the Dodgers that Fall and absolutely blew everyone away. In 1952 he would go 15-4 with an 2.104 ERA, 85 strike outs, 41 walks, a 4.4 WAR and an ERA+ of 171. Furthermore, he would be named the Rookie of the Year and come in third place in MVP voting.

Some Dodgers Memorabilia at Hunt's All Star Game Auction - Koufax, Campy and Gwynn
Last week I featured a questionnaire filled out by Dodgers legend Steve Garvey when he was just a rookie in 1970 (link here). Today, I take a look at several other Dodger collectibles available at Hunt's All-Star Game FanFest auction.
Featured above is a rarity. It is a Sandy Koufax home jersey that dates to 1966. (Auction Link Here) Per the auction description:
The jersey was acquired by a former MLB executive in 1973 (who lived in the Los Angeles area at the time) and has remained within his collection until the current offering. Additionally, the executive was a good acquaintance with long time Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager Buzzie Bavasi. In 1975, Bavasi became aware of the offered Koufax jersey within the collection of the consignor and in jest sent the executive a charming and satirical official MLB typed communique. The note was hand signed by Buzzie and dated July 31, 1975 teasing him that he "owed" Buzzie a check for $56.00 payable to him for the "stolen" uniform.

Blog Kiosk: 3/12/2016 - Dodgers Links - Kiké, Hyers and Brandon McCarthy
Spring training is for practice, and featured above is an Dodger great doing just that. Sprawling on the sand in this vintage "International News" press photo is Jim Gilliam with a picture perfect slide, dated March 1, 1954. Via a descriptor attached to the reverse:

“I would say all hitters all have their own unique style,” Hyers said. “It’s my job to understand their swing. And it’s not my swing, it’s their swing. You want to get to know them as a person and a player. Be the eyes for them. That’s what I try to do — get to know them, understand and work within the framework of their swing. Stay within the framework of their swing. When they start struggling, remind them of who they are as a player, how they got there and the things they do to be successful. Hitting, a lot of it is mental. It’s negative, because of so many times we fail. There’s the physical part, but the mental part is there also.”

Blog Kiosk: 11/6/2015 - Dodger Links - Ruggiano, Harang and Pederson
The photo above would be the culmination of many young boys lives. After all, who didn't want to be either a ballplayer or a fireman... But to be both at the same time would cause most young minds to explode. Featured, you've got Dodger manager Chuck Dressen and pitcher Joe Black spending the afternoon as fireman - complete with Brooklyn Ladder 13 helmet and firetruck. No doubt Black, who was a phenom rookie reliever when this photo was taken in 1952, was in the midst of preparing to put out some wildfires at the Stadium and throughout the city.
This photo is currently available at Albersheim's sports auction. Check out the auction here. Below are more links to check out:
- Via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com, "Ruggiano outrighted to Oklahoma City." I think this is the gist of the situation:
Ruggiano, who made $2.505 million in 2015, would have been eligible for salary arbitration had he remained on the 40-man roster. He has enough service time that he can reject the assignment and become a free agent.
BTW, per Eric Stephen at True Blue LA, Ruggiano chose to enter free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up staying a Dodger.
- David Laurila at FanGraphs shares an fascinating interview with former Dodger pitcher Aaron Harang, here. He talks a bit about the art of pitching - throwing up in the strike zone (like Chris Young), adjusting to changing strike zones and breaking pitches.
- Via David Hood at True Blue LA, "Dodgers top 2016 prospects: Nos. 31-61."
- Via Xavier Alatorre at the Sports Quotient, "Joc Pederson And Patience At The Plate."
What does this mean going forward? Despite flaming out in the second half, the 2015 season cannot be considered a bust for Young Joc. The twenty-three-year-old hit an inevitable slump but made adjustments that paid off in the last two months of the season, though they may have gone unnoticed by some. Now that National League pitchers have seen a full season of Pederson’s swinging tendencies, adjustments will need to be made at the plate. Pederson needs to continue his patient approach and force pitchers to come to him. If he is able to stay away from outside pitches and can wait for more favorable pitches (low and inside) to land in the zone, then Pederson will be a formidable threat at the plate once again.
- Next week Panini will be releasing their 2015 Contenders Baseball set and it includes a bunch of fast rising prospects and some old pro's. Go here to check out a huge collection of preview photos. You can also see cards of Dodger prospects Julio Urias, Corey Seager, Mitchell Hansen and former Ohio State star and former Dodger Frank Howard.
- The Senate report on the "pay for patriotism" brouhaha has just been released and is available here to review. Fortunately, the Dodgers do not appear to have charged the armed forces, but other MLB clubs who did get paid to fake their patriotism includes the Braves, Red Sox, Diamondbacks and Phillies. The DBacks received $40,000 from the Arizona Army National Guard to allow color guard demonstrations, a first pitch and a 40 tickets. Shame on you guys! Jason Lisk at The Big Lead has the story here.
The report lists 50 professional sports teams from the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and MLS that received some sort of federal funding to do a “pay for patriotism” promotion where it appeared to be honoring a military member or branch, but where they were receiving money for engaging in the activity.

Original Brooklyn Dodger Portraits by Susan Rini
I knew I recognized these from somewhere.
The other day I ran into these gouache on cardboard paintings at an Clean Sweep auction and couldn't help but think that they looked familiar. Then it hit me.These are some of the original drawings for those postcard and cachet sets made in the 1980's to early 1990's. Collectors especially liked to have them autographed by these old timers - much like the Perez Steele postcards from the same time period. Check out what a couple of the Rini postcards look like on the right.
As I dug around a bit I found out they were created by artist Suan Rini as a part of a commission for Historic Limited Editions. Check out the auction here. They did not sell.
Featured original paintings include Rex Barney, Joe Black, Ralph Branca, Roger Craig, Carl Erskine, Al Gionfriddo, Gene Hermanski, Spider Jorgensen, Clyde King (2 diff.), Billy Loes, Podres/Throneberry, George Shuba and Chris Van Cuyk.

Blog Kiosk: 5/16/2015 - Dodger Links - Ethier, Dodgers' Hello Kitty Plush Doll and a Fan Ejection?
Here is a fantastic vintage press photo taken by International News, dated March 1, 1954, that I ran across on eBay. It features several Dodger greats getting some needed practice before the season starts. After having an impressive rookie campaign the season prior, Junior Gilliam looks to be showing a couple of pitchers how to slide. After all, all reports I've read indicate that Gilliam had a high Baseball-IQ, and just naturally seemed to understand every part of the game. Below is what is written on the caption attached to the reverse:
SLIDE, JUNIOR, SLIDE--Vero Beach, Florida.....Second baseman Junior Gilliam slides in under the watchful eye of Field Director Al Campanis at the Dodgers training quarters as pitchers Don Newcombe and Joe Black watch.Below are some links to check out:
- Via Ron Cervenka at Think Blue LA, "Dodgers announce rain-delay ticket offer for May 25-27 Braves series."
- ICYMI: Kenley Jansen has been reinstated from the DL and reliever Daniel Coulombe has been options back to AAA, via a tweet from @DodgersPR.
- Via Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times, "Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier is playing like old self."
"It's frustrating, but not everything's going to go good and go the way you want it to be," he said. "You have to grind through things. You're going to have ups and down, not only in the course of the year but in the course of your career. You have to figure out a way to ride them out and keep fighting and keep finding a way to improve and make adjustments."
- Here's an early peek at the Hello Kitty plush Dodger doll that is being given away to fans on Wednesday, July 8th against the Phillies. Check out the Dodgers promotional schedule here.
- Benjamin Hill at Ben's Biz Blog recently visited Historic Dodgertown and shared a bunch of pics. Check them out here.
- I wonder if this could potentially be big news for Dodger fans; especially to those who have been locked out due to the cable situation? Via Timothy Burke at Deadspin, "Judge Grants Class-Action Status To Sports TV Blackout Antitrust Case." Jon Brodkin at Arstechnica also writes about the lawsuit in more detail.
- This is for the Baseball history buffs out there. Via Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily, "(Masnori) Murakami to Return to U.S. for Autographs." Masnori was the first Japanese born player to appear in the major leagues, and he has just finished a new book on his experiences.
- Via David Seideman at Forbes, "Weighing The Risks and Rewards of Investing In Today's Vintage Baseball Card Boom."
- During Thursday's game at the bottom of the ninth inning the home plate umpire is seen moving towards the fans behind him and looked to be motioning at a fan. The initial reaction by most is that he tried to have a fan ejected from the game; which is rare but certainly within his purview. I spent some time trying to find out about the incident and came across the below post on reddit, here. It appears that the flash used by a fan was the problem. DodgerFilms makes note of the incident at the 10:13 mark in this video here.

Dodgers Vintage Memorabilia at REA Auctions - Roy Campanella, the Dodger Scout
Here is another post on some Dodgers memorabilia found at REA's current auction. This time, I share a couple of remarkable letters written by Roy Campanella to Robert Finch - Branch Rickey's assistant at the Brooklyn Dodgers. Go here to take a look at my past post on this auction.
Roy Campanella was highly regarded by the Brooklyn Dodger brass. They were expecting big things from him at and behind the plate, and also valued his judgement on other Negro League players. So, they enlisted his assistance in scouting for them. Below are a couple of letters detailing his opinion of several Negro League players.
Directly below is his letter scouting Larry Doby and Joe Black, dated September 26, 1946.
Here is a letter dated September 25,1946 that scouts Junior Gilliam and Joe Black!

Dear Mr. Finch,
Everything is fine with me. I truly hope its the same with you. Concerning Doby, he can hit, run and throw very good. Hits with a lot of power, but needs to learn how to pull. I've seen him hit home-run in Ruppert Stadium, Newark also Shibe Park, Philadelphia. He has a nice personality, good habits and is intelligent. At present I am watching a right hand pitcher of the Elite Giants. His name is Joe Black, 22 years old, attends Morgan College in Baltimore, Md. He spent three years in service pitching for Tommy Bridges [sic] team and was the only negro on the team. He has an exceptionally good fast ball, good change, good curve ball. Very good disposition. He's very apt to catch on. I will send you a report later on this week about him. Also, I will be too [sic] you the beginning of next week.
Respectfully yours, Roy Campanella
P. S. The home-runs Doby hit were in the left-field seats.

Here is a letter dated September 25,1946 that scouts Junior Gilliam and Joe Black!
Dear Mr. Finch,I love how the above letter provides an update to the Joe Black discussions. Roy mentions that he has scheduled a meeting with him.
I saw a very good game here, between the Baltimore Orioles and Baltimore Elite Giants. Romby pitched for the Giants, and won 3-2. He struck out eleven men in seven innings. The boy really looked good. Concerning Black, the pitcher I mentioned in my previous letter. I have an appointment with him Friday. The young boy Gilliam, has the making of a good player. He is one of the youngest players in the league. He is very apt and has good habits. Hope all is well with you. I will be in the office Tuesday morning at ten o'clock.
Sincerely yours, Roy Campanella.

Some Vintage Dodgers Memorabilia and a Negro League Rarity at Hake's Auctions
Hake's Auctions is currently running their 211th auction. As you may know, Hake's specializes in Americana, so their catalogs are like a peek through American pop history. Below are a couple of Dodgers related items I came across, along with a Negro League item I thought worth noting.
Below is an original editorial cartoon created by Bob Coyne of the Boston Post. Featured are Dodgers manager Leo Durocher and Boston Braves manager Casey Stengel. Per the auction description:
Hake's Auctions had been consigned to sell the collection of Richard Merkin - who was known to have one of the finest collection of Negro League memorabilia in the world. The below original painting comes from that collection.
Featured is former Brooklyn Dodger Joe Black in a Cienfuegos Elephants, of the Cuban League. It was drawn by a Jorge S; who doesn't appear to be a well known artist.
Of all the Negro League items available for sale through Hakes, the photograph at the very bottom stuck out to me. It is a team photo of the 1937 Dominican Republic Ciudad Trujillo Dragons Baseball Club, and it features Hall of Famer Satchel Paige (top row, far left). Also shown are Cuban HOF members Lazaro Salazar and Silvio Garcia.
It isn't that it features Paige that makes this photo notable; not that he wasn't a great player. In fact, this photo is thought to be an early season photo since it doesn't includes some other great Negro League players that would eventually join him and help lead the club to a league championship. Soon to be teammates include Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, Sam Bankhead, Bob Griffith, Leroy Matlock, Cy Perkins, and Harry Williams. Perucho Cepeda, father or Orlando, was also on the team.
This team is considered by many Baseball historians to be one of the 10 best clubs ever put together, and to others their championship is one of the greatest Baseball stories that must be told.
From a REA Auctions description of another photo that describes this well.
Below is an original editorial cartoon created by Bob Coyne of the Boston Post. Featured are Dodgers manager Leo Durocher and Boston Braves manager Casey Stengel. Per the auction description:
Durocher compliments Stengel who has a question mark over his head, noting “What A Swell World This Would Be If All The Players Were As Nice As The Braves And All The Managers As Fair As You Casey!” A small player holding box of cigars stands between the two facing Stengel saying “Compliments Of Mister Durocher” as other players talk in background including mention of Braves relief pitcher Errickson. What's funny about this drawing is that Durocher was the man who coined the phrase, "nice guys finish last." Considering that Stengel's Braves never finished better than 5th during his tenure, this must be a the papers way of saying that Stengels is too soft to manage. Of course, Casey would prove the Boston paper wrong when he went on to win 7 World Championships with the Yankees a decade later.

From a REA Auctions description of another photo that describes this well.
Baseball had long been the National Pastime of the Dominican Republic when, in 1937, Dictator Trujillo decided that he would sponsor a team to win the Championship of the Dominican Baseball League, to beat the teams owned by his political opponents, and increase his popularity with the people, and his hold on the country.
Trujillo took control of two teams, which he merged to create a single powerhouse team which he named the "Cuidad Trujillo Dragons." As the season progressed, the Ciudad Trujillo team soon found themselves locked in a bitter struggle for the Championship of the Dominican League with the Santiago team, led by the great Martin DiHigo. To remedy the situation, Trujillo sent his henchmen to the U.S. with $30,000 and instructions to recruit the best Negro League players in the United States to add to the already very talented Ciudad roster to help them secure the championship.
...
They (eventually) won the title in a tense finale. The night before the final game, according to interviews with pitcher Chet Brewer, Trujillo actually put the players in jail for the night so that they could not be disturbed, or get into any trouble. Legend has it that Trujillo's players were under armed guard, and were "instructed" to win at all costs.
The American players literally feared for their lives if they were not successful. When the players arrived at the stadium for the seventh and deciding game of the championship series, they found Trujillo's troops lined up with rifles and bayonets along the first base side of the field.
According to Satchel Paige, the team was given a "pep talk" by the manager, in which they were told, very simply, that "you had better win." When Paige inquired exactly what this meant, he was told "I mean just that. Take my advice and win." Fortunately, Bankhead's grand slam over DiHigo won the title, and the players took the first opportunity they were given to get on a Pan Am Clipper and leave the Dominican Republic as quickly as possible.

Blog Kiosk: 2/12/2014 - Dodgers Links - Joe Black, Kenley Jansen and Dee Gordon
Steve Garvey shared a great pic of the time he went on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, circa 1977, on twitter.
- Cooperstowners in Canada shares a great vintage photo of the 1954 Montreal Royals (a Dodgers farm team) and a story on former Dodger Joe Black.
Black told Kahn that it wasn’t until he was 11 that he fell in love with baseball. He didn’t own a real baseball, so he taught himself to pitch with a sponge ball. As a kid, Black cut photos of Lou Gehrig, Met Ott, Paul Waner, Paul Derringer, Charlie Gehringer and Hank Greenberg out of the newspaper and glued them into a scrapbook.
- Via Richard Durrett on ESPN writes a story on Michael Young's thoughts about gay professional ballplayers titled, "Wouldn't be an issue".

- The Dodgers and Kenley Jansen agreed to terms for a new contract, and avoid arbitration, via @BillPlunkettocr on twitter. Not a bad compromise, eh?
No arbitration for #Dodgers this year. They reach agreement at $4.3 million on one-year deal with Kenley Jansen. He asked for $5.05m

Roy Campanella All-Stars Barnstorming Team Photo at Hake's Auctions
Hake's Americana and Collectibles is running another one of their great auctions and it includes even more Negro League memorabilia from the famed collection of Richard Merkin. From a previous post:
Below is a Dodger related photograph from the Merkin collection. It is from 1954 and features the Roy Campanella All-Stars barnstoming team. As you know, many ballplayers traveled the country playing Baseball to eager fans during the winter months to earn some extra coin. Other Dodgers in the photo below include Don Newcombe, Joe Black and Jim Gilliam.
From the auction description:
Merkin was a American painter and illustrator who taught his craft for over 40 years at the Rhode Island School of Design. His own works reside in the Museum of Modern Art and the Smithsonian Institution. He also wrote for Vanity Fair and illustrated the book "Leagues Apart: The Men and Times of the Negro Leagues." BTW, pop culture enthusiast might find it interesting to know that Merkin appeared on the cover of the Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album (back row, right of center). He was an avid collector of vintage Negro League photography as evidenced by his collection that has appeared at Hake's over the past couple of years.

Mailbag: A 1953 Joe Black Sport Magazine Premium
You can chase after the typical 1950's era Topps card if you want. Personally, I prefer the oddball stuff.
On eBay, I recently saw a 1953 Sport Magazine All-Star Portfolio color photo premium of Joe Black and immediately placed a bid. Heck, at an opening bid of $9.99 I figured I couldn't go wrong, and if I won it at that price I knew I'd be dancing in the streets. Well, now I'm dancing.
These photos were a subscription premium give-away and measure 5 3/8" x 7". Furthermore, they feature the photographs of legendary photographer Ozzie Sweet, who passed away about 2 weeks ago at the age of 94.
from the NY Times obituary:
At the end of World War II, Ozzie Sweet’s picture of a friend posed as a German soldier surrendering appeared on the cover of Newsweek — “the magazine of news significance,” as it billed itself then. Not a stratagem that would pass muster in contemporary journalism, but Mr. Sweet, who had apprenticed to the Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum, appeared in a Cecil B. DeMille film and helped create promotional ads for the United States Army, found the art in photography to be in creating an image, not capturing one.In the below photo, Sweet can be seen working with Jackie Robinson during a photo shoot.
He considered himself not a news photographer but a photographic illustrator, and like the work of the painter Norman Rockwell, whom he claimed as an influence, his signature images from the 1940s through the 1950s and into the 1960s, many in the fierce hues of increasingly popular color film that emulated the emergent Technicolor palette of American movies, helped define — visually, anyway — an era.
But Mr. Sweet became most closely associated with Sport, a monthly magazine that predated Sports Illustrated and after 1947 featured dozens, if not hundreds, of his portraits on its cover. Johnny Unitas, Jim Brown, Maurice Richard, Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Sandy Koufax and Mickey Mantle were all his subjects.Sometimes, he positioned them trading-card style, in poses suggestive of action, as with Jackie Robinson seemingly in midslide; sometimes, he contrived an imaginative image, as he did with Roger Maris, with a half-dozen bats flying in the air around him. (To make the picture Mr. Sweet suspended the bats in midair with fishing line.) Still others were immediate, intimate close-ups.
