Blog Kiosk: 8/8/2010

I apologize for the lack of post this past week. I've just been buried at work. Nothing like real life getting in the way of some fun.

The National

It's that time of year again. Today is day 1 of the National Sports Collectors Convention, and all kinds of videos and pics are showing up on the web. I'll be spending the next few days tracking down as much as I can and posting them here. This year it is being held in Baltimore- the birthplace of Babe Ruth.

First, check out some of the videos already posted up on various blogs.
Now for some pics.

Something is wrong with this photo below. What is a Babe Ruth auto doing on the same shelf as this hyped rookie pitcher?

Here is a great little note written from a Hall of Famer to his pal.

This is probably the coolest thing I've seen so far.

Trading In Those Red Man's

Here is an eBay auction of one rare cap.

Imagine. It's 1955 and you are collecting the Red Man tobacco set of Baseball cards. You finally have amassed 50 cards and realize you have enough for a special prize. Check out the below picture of the back of one of the cards.
With 50 tabs cut from the bottom of the card you can receive a big league cap of your favorite team. You send them in and receive the Brooklyn Dodger cap seen here.

I have no idea how rare this is, but I can't believe many still exist; especially in this condition. It still retains a Redman Baseball Cap stamp on the inside band and looks like it has never been worn.

Isotopes Lucas May Card

First, I want to send a hearty thank you to Kris with the Albuquerque Isotopes (and writer of the Cards in the Attic Blog) for sending me an incredible package filled with some Baseball card goodness. Several weeks back, while perusing Evan's blog "New Mexico Fan" I saw some give-aways made by the Isotopes team and remarked how cool some of the cards were. Well, Kris saw my post and, out of the Blue, sent some to me. Check out card #1 above and below of recently traded catcher Lucas May.

These cards were given away to fans during select autograph days with a player. The players, in this case Lucas May, would sign them for the fans. They are large in size, 5x8, and resemble the vintage 1965 Topps Baseball card design. The best part about them are the little cartoons on the back.

Stay tuned, Kris sent along the first 6 cards of the set, so I'll feature each one individually on a future post. Also, two autograph sessions remain in Albuquerque (including one this coming Sunday) so, if you are in the area be sure to check them out. Here is their website. Again, thank you very much Kris.

Welcome to the Blue Guys

I was prepared to do some light posting over the weekend when I suddenly found myself pondering a couple of trades Saturday morning that had my mind aflutter. Call it "Dazed and Confused."

Over the weekend we picked up Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot and Octavio Dotel for a whole bunch of prospects- some pretty good ones. We sent away Blake Dewitt, James McDonald, Andrew Lambo, Kyle Smit and Bret Wallach.

At this moment I am on the fence about the trades. I'm trying the weight the benefits of two months of potential hope against a major regret it could develop into a couple of years from now. Nevertheless, three new Dodger have joined the club and it is only proper to welcome them to the Blue.

Will the trades help? I just don't know.
