Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 30/Home Game 15

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

HOMEWARD BOUND: The Dodgers take on the Indians this afternoon in their final Cactus League contest before returning to Los Angeles for the Freeway Series against the Angels. The clubs will meet Thursday (7:10 p.m., LHP Scott Kazmir vs. LHP Andrew Heaney) and Friday (7:10 p.m., RHP Kenta Maeda vs. LHP Hector Santiago) at Dodger Stadium, with the series shifting to Anaheim for a 6:05 p.m. game Saturday (LHP Alex Wood vs. RHP Nick Tropeano). After an off-day Sunday, the Dodgers kick off the regular season on Monday against the Padres at PETCO Park – just five days away!
  • The third and final meeting between Cleveland and Los Angeles (0-1-1) will feature a matchup of 2014 Cy Young Award winners, Clayton Kershaw and Corey Kluber. Today’s start will be a shortened outing for Kershaw in preparation for his sixth consecutive Opening Day start on Monday.
A LOOK BACK: The Dodgers rallied for six runs in the eighth inning yesterday, but their comeback bid came up just short in an 11-9 loss to the Padres in Peoria. Justin Turner homered for the second consecutive game, Joc Pederson hit a three-run homer and Adrian Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Dodgers’ offensive attack. Ross Stripling allowed five runs on three home runs in 5.0 innings, striking out five, and Louis Coleman allowed his first runs of the spring (10.0 IP, 1.80 ERA), allowing two runs in the sixth inning.

ACCELERATING!: Yesterday, the Los Angeles Dodgers and R/GA Ventures started accepting applications for the second class of the LA Dodgers Sports and Entertainment Accelerator. The accelerator, the first of its kind in the sports industry, is revolutionizing how fans, athletes, and sports organizations intersect with technology and the upcoming program will build upon the achievements of the highly successful 2015 class. Five to seven startups will be selected, enabling in-depth engagement with the Dodgers' leadership, business units, and industry network, as well as R/GA's award-winning strategic marketing, branding, design, and technology services.

THE STAFF: Dave Roberts is in his first season at the helm of the Dodgers after being named the 10th manager in Los Angeles history (28th in franchise history) on Nov. 23, 2015. Roberts, 43, served as the Padres’ bench coach from 2014-15 and was San Diego’s first base coach from 2011-13. Rick Honeycutt returns for an 11th season as Dodger pitching coach and is the lone returning member of the Los Angeles coaching staff besides catching instructor Steve Yeager. The new-look staff is comprised of bench coach Bob Geren (2015: Mets’ bench coach), hitting coach Turner Ward (2015: D-backs’ hitting coach), first base coach George Lombard (2015: Red Sox’ minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator), third base coach Chris Woodward (2015: Mariners’ first base coach), bullpen coach Josh Bard (2015: Dodgers’ pro scout), assistant hitting coach Tim Hyers (2015: Red Sox’ minor league hitting coordinator) and quality assurance coach Juan Castro (2015: Dodgers’ minor league infield coordinator).

  • The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy birthday to Josh Bard, who turns 38 today!
A 40th ANNIVERSARY PARTY: Earlier today, Arizona State University announced plans to honor Rick Monday on April 26, a day after the 40th anniversary of his heroic saving of an American flag from being burned by protestors on the field at Dodger Stadium. ASU will wear special uniforms that night in addition to a special pre-game ceremony and poster giveaway.
