Blog Kiosk: 11/16/2018 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

I can't wait for spring.

Featured above is a 1942 Spring Training pic during a Dodgers trip to Havana, Cuba. You can see shortstop Pee Wee Reese comically stepping over some bats at La Tropical Stadium. Photo found at CubanBĂ©isbol.

Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodgers HistoryIn 1961 the expansion New York Mets unveiled a circular logo that includes the team colors of the two teams who skipped town just a few years before -- it has Dodger Blue and Giants orange. In 1966 Sandy Koufax missed out on winning his second MVP award by ten votes to Pirates outfielder Roberto Clemente. As you know, this would be Koufax's last major league season.
  • Happy BirthdayJoe StraussGlenn Burke & Julio Lugo!
  • This afternoon the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF), along with Kenley Jansen and Dodger Alumni, will join volunteers in distributing a complimentary turkey (or vegetarian alternative), fixings and reusable canvas bags to 1,200 pre-selected families in need at Dodger Stadium.
  • Wow! This has nothing to do with the Dodgers or Baseball, but is worth mentioning nonetheless. Per Katie Kindelan at ABC News; "'Batkid' is now cancer free 5 years after taking over city of San Francisco with Make-A-Wish."
  • Via Gabriel Baumgaertner at Sports Illustrated; "How Kevin Brown Became Baseball's First $100 Million Man."
"Scott Boras is as good as they are when it comes to bluffing," Bowden says. "There was never a single team in the $100 million ballpark except the Dodgers."
Nearly two decades removed from baseball, Malone defends his decision.
"If other teams had the resources, they’d have made the deal I made,"
Malone says. "A bunch of people came up to me after the deal and said 'I would have done the same thing.'"
“Major League Baseball and its Clubs recognize the desire of Players to have more flexibility in this area and are pleased to announce the loosening of regulations that will permit more personalized and stylized footwear. We believe that this agreement strikes the appropriate balance between the shared goal of permitting Players to express their individuality while maintaining reasonable restrictions on shoe colors and designs.”
MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark added: “Players welcome the expanded opportunity to express themselves and engage with fans through innovative design. We look forward to seeing their creativity and individuality on the field in 2019.”
  • This is one of my favorite awards. The Hall of Very Good announces their 2018 Class, here. It features Al Oliver, Bob Motley, The Sandlot and Red Sox groundskeeper David Mellor.
  • Just another find of rare Baseball card. Per Rich Mueller at Sports Collectors Daily; "Hot Dog! Nice Find of Uncirculated 1954 Wilson Franks Cards."
  • This is awesome. Sports Card Info tells us a bit about the Mickey Mouse rookie card from 1931.
  • This weeks 2018 Topps Throwback Thursday set features MLB award winners from 2017 and 2018 on the 1982 Award Winners Baseball card design. Included in the set in Cody Bellinger with Ronald Acuna Jr. Seeit out below. Go here to check it out and order.
