And Your 2016 Dodgers Spring Training Ping Pong Champions Are...

Back in late February, as players were settling in for the start of spring training, the Dodgers began their annual ping pong tournament.  With the help of Clayton Kershaw and Adrian Gonzalez they randomly picked out playing-pairs and quickly established an championship bracket.
(Photo of tournament bracket via Eric Stephen on twitter)

As you know, Clayton has ruled the roost the past several years, but as you can see in the bracket above, he was matched up with a less than able player -- Adrian Gonzalez.  So, his return to the top of the hill was unlikely, and someone new would be basking in the sun.  Those other potential championship pairs include Kenta Maeda with Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and AJ Ellis, and Julio Urias and Howie Kendrick.  None of these pairs, though, made it to the final round.

Instead of just plainly announcing the finalist for this years tournament I thought I'd let Kiké Hernandez do it, via a series of tweets by Adrian Gonzalez.

First up, from the right bracket, is Brandon Beachy and Scott Van Slyke (tweet link here):
And from the left bracket is Chris Anderson and Justin Turner (tweet link here):
Unfortunately, gameplay of the entire match isn't available, but we do have a video of the winning point.  Check it out below, via another AGon tweet:
Congrats!

I wonder if they'll get a little trophy to commemorate the occasion.

Blog Kiosk: 12/22/2015 - Dodger Links - Anderson, Hatcher and Friedman's Rebuild

Old Dodger Skipper Leo Durocher is doing what many of us hope to be doing soon in the photo above.  He is about to embark onto a plane towards the Dodgers Spring Training home in Havana, Cuba for the 1947 season.  As you know, the emergence of Jackie Robinson that year would cause all kinds of strife behind the scenes that spring; including a petition by several players against Jackie.  Nevertheless, the breaking of the color barrier would soon commence.  BTW, Durocher's was eventually suspended as manager before the start of the season (it was related to his association with known gamblers), but not before squelching the aforementioned petition.  On a side note, Durocher so admired Robinson he started calling him a "Durocher with talent."  The ACME press photo above was found on eBay.

below are more links to check out:
  • This is exactly right.  The Dodgers are rebuilding the minor league system while at the same time staying competitive, and within a few short years we'll reap the benefits.  Via Nick Lampe at Beyond the Boxscore, "Andrew Friedman is building a long-term juggernaut without sacrificing the present."
Despite everything that has happened this offseason, the Dodgers are in a better position than ever to compete in 2016 and beyond as a result of some of the moves made by Andrew Friedman and company over the last year. Looking ahead to 2016, the Dodgers are in an excellent position to win the NL West title for the fourth year in a row. At this point in time, FanGraphs depth charts have the Dodgers at 47.6 WAR, which roughly equates to a 95-win team. This total is the second-best in all of baseball behind only the Cubs (51.8 WAR), and it puts them eight games in front of the Giants and 16 games in front of the Diamondbacks.
The waiters who had been hustling to set tables for dinner on the patio a few feet away suddenly stopped and looked out at the lawn, then back at one another, completely confused. The guy was throwing heat.

A hotel guest ran over and asked in disbelief, “Is that … Clayton Kershaw?”

  • Via David Hood at True Blue LA, "Dodgers top prospects 2016: No. 13, Chris Anderson."
It’s possible that Anderson has more value in trade for the Dodgers, but 2015 was a step back and he could use next season to rebuild value or repackage himself as a reliever. He could return to Tulsa to start next season if the Dodgers wish to continue his development as a starter, but I most likely see his 2016 role in the Oklahoma City bullpen. He’s ranked as high as he is because the potential is still there for late relief, but next season is a make or break season for Anderson’s prospect value. If Anderson’s best stuff shows itself more frequently in relief, it’s possible that he could make his Dodgers’ debut at the end of the 2016 season.
“I think early on in the year, I sat there and overanalyzed what I was doing,” he said. “But at the end of the year, it was more, ‘Give me that ball. I’ll move on. If I give up one, give it to me tomorrow.'”

Blog Kiosk: 12/21/2015 - Dodger Links - Ryu, Maddux and Don Newcombe

Although it's a bit too late to make a bid I just had to point this item out.  The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes held an auction recently in benefit of the San Bernardino United Relief Fund that included the above team signed jersey.  As you can see, it features specially made Star Wars jerseys that were worn for a game on May 24, 2014.  Signers include Dodger prospects like Corey Seager, Chris Anderson, Jharel Cotton and Kyle Farmer.  It sold for $305.  Of special note:
The jersey was purchased at the game’s silent auction and generously donated back to the Quakes by the 501st Legion – Southern California Garrison (501st.com) and Cory Leeper (IG: @coryvader).
Below are more links to check out:
"I have no reason to believe I won't be ready for Spring Training," Ryu said.

"Other than throwing off a mound and going all out, I pretty much can do everything I want to do. I'm on a great program and everything is going great. No discomfort, absolutely nothing."
Greg Maddux is expected to join a West Coast team — likely the Dodgers — as a part-time special assistant. Maddux said he doesn’t want a full-time coaching career. His son, Chase, is a freshman pitcher at UNLV and Maddux wants to spend time watching his games. He also enjoys traveling with his family.
...

“I enjoy working with pitchers,” Greg Maddux said. “If there’s something I can do to help a young guy think about the game more and what he’s throwing and why he’s throwing it, I can help like that.”
“It was a lot fun. It’s obvious they love baseball,” commented the Dodgers' ace, who took part in all the events during the three-day tour. “They asked me to name an ideal U.S. lineup, and I mentioned a few players, but they kept telling me the Cuban team would crush them. I missed quite a few, so now I’ve really got to think about that lineup.”
  • Even with a lack of significant trades or free agent signings the Dodgers are still considered to have one of the Top-Five rotations in Baseball, via Paul Casella at MLB.com.
  • Via Bill Plaschke at the LA Times, "Don Newcombe, a link to Dodgers' greatness, wants to see more of it."
"Look at me when I talk to you," he says. "The Dodgers are the greatest team in history of baseball, and the Dodgers will be world champions again before I leave this earth."

2015 Bowman Draft Baseball - The Dodgers Insert Cards

Following up on Wednesday's post featuring the Dodger base cards (link here) found in packs of 2015 Bowman Draft Baseball I now share pics of most of the Dodger insert cards that are available.  Take a look below.  As you can see, the 2015 1st Round Draft Pick Walker Buehler is everywhere.  Also, there are Asia boxes that have exclusive inserts in them.  It is unknown at this time if there are any Dodgers in them, but I will endeavor to update this list should any pop up.

2015 Topps Heritage Minor League - All the Dodgers Cards

Here is another new Baseball card set from Topps.  It is a part of their Heritage brand and focuses on minor league prospects.  Go here for a complete checklist.

Called Topps Heritage Minor League it features the best and brightest young stars in the game.  Both Julio Urias and Corey Seager are included.  Unfortunately, autographed cards of either of them are not available.  As you can see, its design is based on the vintage 1966 Topps Baseball set.  Check out all of the Dodger cards available in packs below.

Of note is the Corey Seager Base Short Print card.  That Oklahoma City Dodgers uniform he's wearing is sharp looking.

Blog Kiosk: 7/22/2015 - Dodger Links - Kendrick's Epic Rant

Check out the above epic rant by Dodger second baseman Howie Kendrick that he posted on instagram yesterday.  (Hat Tip: r/sgtjoo on reddit)  I say epic because... Well, I kind of like it when players, who are often treated like they are mere things that exist to only entertain us, come out of the shadows to show us how human they are.

Like just about anyone under the constant glare of the public, Howie often gets degrading and demeaning comments from anonymous idiots with nothing better to do.  Sure, he should just ignore them, but sometimes you just get sick of it.  Sometimes, you need to lash out.

BTW, I don't think he's ranting at all fans - just the nobs who are not nice.  In fact, I would be willing to bet some of those idiots think they're funny.  For the record, most of them aren't... Not by a long-shot... Oftentimes, they are just mean... And I've had enough of the schadenfreude so persistent on social media.

So Howie, you keep being you... And as a Dodger fan I will always root for your success.  And yes, I agree with you, the Dodgers are fine.  I do think we'll need some tweaking here and there, but for the most part I'm not unhappy with where we are.  Oh... I happen to like guns too.  So, feel free to continue enjoying your hobby.

Below are some links to check out:
Then when it became clear that McCourt was going to be forced to sell the team, I basically moved in with my sister in West Hollywood and continued reporting. I got tired of paying New York rent when I wasn’t there—and I needed a change of scenery for a variety of personal reasons. So in March, 2011 I basically sent for my stuff and continued covering all the craziness around McCourt. Then when he sold the team for $2 billion to this really interesting guy from Chicago, I became even more intrigued. But it wasn’t until the Dodgers signed Zack Greinke, honestly, that I thought about writing a book. And it was because a few Dodger players who knew me texted and said “Shit. We were bankrupt and now we have Greinke and Kershaw and we’re going to win a title. You should write a book.” That’s what happened.

Blog Kiosk: 6/17/2015 - Dodger Links - Kershaw, Ethier and McCarthy

Country star Toby Keith visited with Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers prior to yesterday's game in Texas, and as you can see he has his Baseball allegiance set right.  The photo above is via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015Go here to check out more pics taken bu Jon from yesterday's game.

Below are some links to check out:
"It's fun to be home, see your friends and family," Kershaw said. "Usually you don't get to do this until the offseason, so it's a little bit weird, but it's fun for 24 hours or so."
Ethier isn’t being fooled by off-speed stuff this year, and he’s shortened his stroke enough to capitalize on pitches inside that may have jammed him in the past. His ability to recognize strikes more efficiently has the lefty making more contact and allowing him to be more aggressive at the dish without swinging recklessly at pitches out of the zone.

Blog Kiosk: 4/11/2015 - Dodger Links - Gonzo, Pederson and Puig

Sean Astin hammed it up with the boys prior to the start of Friday's game in Phoenix.  Photo above via @Dodgers on twitter.

Honest question.  Did Puig even know who he was?  It's been 12 years since Astin played Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, so I don't think he would have ever seen the film while he was still in Cuba.  (Forgive me for my ignorance, but would a common Cuban be familiar with modern Hollywood films?)  I understand that Sean Astin is a Dodger fan, so no doubt he's probably met Puig before yesterday (I would assume).  Still, I do wonder how much of the American/Western culture Puig knew before coming here.

Below are some links to check out:
Clearly, swinging and missing has been a problem for Pederson, even when he tore through Pacific Coast League pitching throughout the 2014 minor league season. His 13.5% swinging strike rate — calculated as whiffs divided by pitches seen — is nearly identical to that which he’s posted thus far in his big league career. He’s swinging about five percent less often and seeing more pitches since his promotion, which at the very least shows us he’s been selective, even sans chase rate in those minor league scoreboards I sifted through. But even so, while Pederson seems to be a patient hitter, he’s making less contact when he does swing, which is particularly concerning by my estimation.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 23 / Home Game 11

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

--------------------------
Arizona Diamondbacks (12-8-1) at Los Angeles Dodgers (10-6-6)
Monday, March 23, 2015 – 1:05 p.m. MT | Camelback Ranch

RHP Daniel Hudson (0-0, 6.75) vs. RHP Chris Anderson (1-1, 3.00)
TV: SNLA

SNAKE CATCHERS: The Dodgers, who have the National League’s best spring winning percentage at .625, take on the Diamondbacks for the first of two meetings this spring. Last year, the Dodgers dominated the Snakes, winning 15 of 19 games, including two in Sydney, Australia, and eight of 10 in Phoenix. This season, the clubs will square off during the campaign’s first month as the Dodgers travel to Chase Field for their first road trip, April 10-12. Arizona’s first visit to Dodger Stadium will come the next time the squads play, from May 1-3.
  • One year ago today, the Dodgers continued their 2014 opening series by picking up their second consecutive victory over Arizona, 7-5, in Sydney, Australia. Yasiel Puig and Juan Uribe each had a double and three hits while Andre Ethier added two hits and an RBI. On the mound, left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu tossed 5.0 scoreless innings for the victory.
  • The Dodgers’ one-and-only off day of the spring falls tomorrow. Left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson will participate in a minor league game on the back fields at 1:00 p.m. to stay on schedule.

THEY SAY IT’S YOUR BIRTHDAY: The Dodgers would like to wish a very happy birthday to Joel Peralta, who turns 39 today! Peralta is in his first season with the Dodgers after spending the previous 10 seasons with the Angels (2005), Royals (2006-08), Rockies (2009), Nationals (2010) and Rays (2011-14). The native of the Dominican Republic was acquired on Nov. 20, 2014 with Adam Liberatore in exchange for Jose Dominguez and Greg Harris. Peralta hold the Rays’ all-time record for appearances with 296.

MEDICAL MINUTE: Yesterday, Dodger left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu left Camelback Ranch for Los Angeles, where he will meet with Dr. Neal ElAttrache today. Ryu has been experiencing discomfort in his left shoulder and received an inflammation-reducing injection on March 18. Fellow left-hander Erik Bedard will have an MRI this morning after suffering what is believed to be a lat strain in San Antonio.

THE LEGEND: Former Cy Young Award winner and current Special Advisor to the Chairman Don Newcombe is at Camelback Ranch this week! Newcombe, who won the very first Cy Young Award in 1956, is making his annual visit to Dodger Spring Training and will throw a ceremonial first pitch prior to Friday’s sold-out game against the Giants.
(Joc Pederson, pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015)

SUCH A JOC: Joc Pederson has posted a .436/.476/.769 slashline this spring and continues to rank among the NL leaders in runs (10, T-1st), hits (17, T-1st) and total bases (30, 2nd), on-base percentage (.476, T-3rd) and slugging percentage (.769, 1st). Pederson also ranks second in the NL in batting average, trailing only Arizona’s Ender Inciarte (.472).
  • Justin Turner has homered in consecutive games, posted four consecutive multi-hit games and also hit safely in 10 consecutive contests dating to March 8. He’s batting .469 with four doubles, two homers and six RBI, while posting a .485 on-base percentage and a .781 slugging percentage in 12 Cactus League games.
  • The Dodgers have been going deep at a frenetic pace of late and now lead the Major Leagues with 33 home runs this spring, four more than the Chicago Cubs. The club is led by Yasiel Puig, Joc Pederson and Kiké Hernandez, who all have three.

CAN’T FLY SOLO: The Dodgers lost to the Indians, 4-2, yesterday at Camelback Ranch, getting solo homers from Yasiel Puig and Kiké Hernandez as their only offense of the game. The club was limited to five hits and managed just three in 5.2 innings off of American League Cy Young winner Corey Kluber. On the mound, left-hander David Huff tossed 3.0 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit while J.P. Howell (1.0 IP), Paco Rodriguez (1.0), Yimi Garcia (1.2) and David Aardsma all tossed scoreless relief. Garcia has now fired 7.1 scoreless frames with nine strikeouts this spring.

ON THE MOUND: 22-year-old RHP Chris Anderson will make his third Cactus League appearance today. He has allowed one run on one hit through 3.0 innings so far this spring. Anderson was the Dodgers’ top pick in the 2013 draft and has averaged 9.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings during the course of his career, striking out 196 batters and walking 87 in 180.1 innings.
  • Hard-throwing LHP Adam Liberatore is expected to make his seventh appearance of the spring today. Through six Cactus League appearances, Liberatore has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, surrendering only three hits and striking out six.
  • LHP Daniel Coulombe is also expected to see action today. Coulombe has held opposing hitters to a .063 batting average this spring, allowing only one hit in 4.2 innings.
  • RHP Sergio Santos will make his seventh appearance after tossing a scoreless inning of relief in last Friday’s loss to Colorado.
  • RHP Pedro Baez will see action today, for the sixth time this spring. The native of the Dominican Republic has held opposing hitters to a .200 batting average and struck out five through 4.0 innings of work.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 9 / Road Game 5

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

--------------------------
Los Angeles Dodgers(4-1-3) vs. Chicago Cubs (0-6-1)
Wednesday, March 11, 2015 – 1:05 p.m. MT | Sloan Park

RHP Zack Greinke (0-0) vs. LHP Jon Lester (0-0)
TV: SNLA Radio: None

--------------------------
(Ryu, Guerrero & Uribe, pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015)

HEATING UP: The Dodgers enter today’s contest in Mesa unbeaten in their last seven games (4-0-3), playing to a 2-2 tie yesterday against Colorado, and take on the Cubs in the first of two Cactus League games between the clubs. Los Angeles won the season series over Chicago last year, 4-3, and will play six regular-season games against the Cubs, June 22-24 at Wrigley Field and Aug. 28-30 at Dodger Stadium.

(Ferrell & Jeong, via Jon SooHoo)
WHERE THERE’S A WILL, THERE’S A WAY: Tomorrow, actor and comedian Will Ferrell will be suiting up for 10 MLB teams throughout the day – including the Dodgers – to benefit cancer charities. Ferrell is honoring the 50th anniversary of Bert Campaneris playing all nine positions in one game, in 1965, and will play all nine positions (and DH) during the course of the day in the following Cactus League games tomorrow: Mariners at Athletics, noon; Cubs at Angels, 1:10 p.m.; Reds at D-backs, 2:10 p.m.; Giants at White Sox, 4:05 p.m.; Dodgers at Padres, 6:15 p.m. Ferrell’s efforts are part of a special for HBO airing later this year in collaboration with MLB Media and the production team at Funny Or Die. HBO is donating proceeds to Cancer for College, and MLB is raising additional money for that cause in addition to Stand Up To Cancer through the auction of game-used, autographed gear and equipment featured throughout this one-of-a-kind project. Ferrell will be pitching for the Dodgers, playing the outfield for the Padres and umpiring during tomorrow night’s contest, which will air on SportsNet LA and MLB Network.
(Clayton Kershaw, pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015)

A NICE SELECTION OF TIES: The Dodgers played to a 2-2 tie with the Rockies yesterday, with Clayton Kershaw allowing one run on three hits in 3.0 innings in his second start of the spring and Joe Wieland (2.0 IP), David Aardsma (1.0 IP), Paco Rodriguez (1.0 IP, 3 K) and Pedro Baez (1.0 IP) all tossing scoreless relief. Scott Schebler blasted a game-tying solo homer in the eighth inning, his fourth extra-base hit of the spring, and has posted a .429/.429/.857 slashline in six Cactus League games.
  • The Dodgers have committed just three errors through their first eight Cactus League contests.
  • Los Angeles pitchers have combined to post a 3.38 ERA and limit opposing hitters to a .205 batting average this spring, striking out 60 and walking only 17 in 72.0 innings.

ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Zack Greinke, who was given a lubricating injection in his right elbow on Feb. 19, will make his first start of the spring today. The 2014 Gold Glover and All-Star posted a career-high 17 wins last year, ranking among the NL leaders in wins (17-8, T-5th), innings pitched (202.1, T-11th) and strikeouts (205, T-5th) in 32 starts.
  • LHP David Huff is expected to make his second appearance of the spring today after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings in a start against the Mariners last Friday. The UCLA product combined to go 4-1 with a 3.36 ERA in 46 relief appearances with the Yankees and Giants in 2014.
  • 18-year-old LHP Julio Urias will make his second appearance of the spring today after striking out two in 1.2 innings of work in Friday’s win over the Brewers. In 2014, Urias was selected to the World Team for the XM All-Star Futures Game, becoming the youngest-ever player to participate in the contest at the age of 17.
  • LHP Chris Reed is also expected to see action today after giving up one run on two hits in 2.0 innings of work on Friday. The Dodgers’ top pick in the 2011 draft has limited opposing hitters to a .247 batting average during the course of his minor league career, including a .220 mark against left-handers.
  • RHP Chris Anderson is expected to appear in today’s game after pitching 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in his first action of the spring on Friday against the Mariners. Anderson led the Single-A-California League with 146 strikeouts in 134.1 innings in 27 games (25 starts) in 2014 with Rancho Cucamonga.
  • RHP Zach Lee will make his second appearance of the spring today after tossing 2.0 scoreless innings and recording the win in last Friday’s game against the Brewers. The former first-round draft pick has a 32-25 record and a 4.16 ERA in 105 career games (101 starts) in four minor league seasons in the Dodger Organization.

ON THE DOTTED LINE: Yesterday, the Dodgers reached agreements with all their players with 0-2 years of service time: Pedro Baez, Austin Barnes, Mike Bolsinger, Daniel Coulombe, Carlos Frias, Yimi Garcia, Yasmani Grandal, Chris Hatcher, Kiké Hernandez, Zach Lee, Adam Liberatore, Joc Pederson, Chris Reed, Paco Rodriguez, Scott Schebler, Scott Van Slyke and Chris Withrow.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Pitchers & Catchers Workout #3

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

--------------------------
(Gimme five, Donnie!  Pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015)

THE THEORY OF EVERYSPRING: Today marked the third day of workouts for pitchers and catchers at Camelback Ranch – Glendale. Position players report on Wednesday, with the first full-squad workout of 2015 scheduled for Thursday.
  • Clayton Kershaw, Brandon League, Brandon McCarthy, Brett Anderson, Joe Wieland, Chris Hatcher, Juan Nicasio, Daniel Coulombe, Carlos Frias, Adam Liberatore, Erik Bedard, David Huff, Josh Ravin and Ryan Buchter all threw their second “official” bullpens of the spring.
  • Two pitchers who haven’t thrown bullpens yet – Zack Greinke (elbow) and Joel Peralta (shoulder) – played catch this morning. Both are expected to be back on a regular schedule soon. Right-hander Ben Rowen is recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and is not expected back until the latter part of Spring Training.
  • A couple more position players reported to camp early for voluntary workouts, including Chris Heisey and Darnell Sweeney while catcher Ali Solis left camp due to a contractual issue.

BIRDMAN: Dodger non-roster invitee and 2013 first-round selection (18th overall) Chris Anderson is making his first appearance in big league camp after going 10-7 with a 3.94 ERA in 39 games (37 starts) over his first two minor league seasons. Last year, Anderson was 7-7 with a 4.62 ERA and a league-leading 146 strikeouts (in 134.1 IP) in 27 games (25 starts) for Single-A Rancho Cucamonga. The Minnesota native attended Jacksonville University, where he was freshman All-America and earned second team all-conference honors.

Blog Kiosk: 1/22/2015 - Dodger Links - Chris Anderson, Brett Anderson and Jeff Bridges

We are less than two weeks away from the release of Topps 2015 flagship Baseball card set, so news and information about it will be coming out like a flood.  For instance, one of the subsets being released is called "First Pitch," and it includes cards of notable folks throwing out first pitches.  There are 15 cards in the subset, and three of them are from Dodger Stadium.  The above pic, via Chris Olds at Beckett, is a preview pic of a Jeff Bridges card.  Below is a checklist of Dodger "First Pitch" cards.
  • #FP-01 Jeff Bridges
  • #FP-08 Jermaine Jones
  • #FP-13 Suzy
Out of curiosity, who the heck is Suzy?  Other notables include McKayla Maroney, Eddie Vedder, Tom Morello and 50 Cent.  As you will recall, 50 Cent hilariously couldn't throw a Baseball right during his first pitch last season.  Watch it here.  There is also a card for 105-year old Agnes McKee.  You can check out a complete checklist of the upcoming set here.

Below are some more links to check out:
As a starter, Anderson has one of the livelier fastballs in the system. He typically sits at 92-94 with heavy armside run. Anderson doesn’t generate as many ground balls as you’d expect with this life, most likely because he tends to pitch up in the zone. Anderson has the potential to throw in the upper 90’s in relief stints and should maintain enough of the life on the pitch to miss plenty of bats.
Anderson called Kershaw one of “the nicest guys you could be around,” and that fondness remained long after their high school days were over. Anderson was with the opposing Colorado Rockies when Kershaw threw his no-hitter this past June 18, and couldn’t help praising the lefty.
"I feel good and hope, with no setback, I should be good to go for Spring Training," he said.
Baseball’s fattest payroll commands the most attention when it comes to the Dodgers, but the organization has built one of the game’s better farm systems, especially at the top. Aside from the Cubs, the Dodgers’ top three prospects are as strong as any other organization’s in baseball.

2014 Topps Heritage Minor League Baseball - The Dodger Base Cards

Topps just released a brand new Baseball card set and it's an minor league version of their Heritage card set they put out in March.  It is called 2014 Topps Heritage Minor League and it includes some of the best and brightest prospects in the game.  Go here for a complete checklist.  As you can see, this set borrows the vintage 1965 Topps Baseball card design.

There are seven Dodger prospects in the 200 card base set.  Check them all out below.  Of note, Jesmuel Valentin is no longer a part of the Dodger franchise.  He was traded to the Phillies a few weeks back as a part of the Roberto Hernandez trade.  Also, this will be the last time we see a Dodger prospect wearing an Isotope uniform on a Baseball card.  The Dodgers recently purchased an ownership stake in the Oklahoma City RedHawks AAA club, and will begin playing there next year.

BTW, there are Short Printed Variation cards of Julio Urias and Joc Pederson, but I have yet to see them.  I hope to have photos of those cards to share next week.

#17 Zach Lee                                      #22 Corey Seager

#55 Julio Urias                                 #76 Jesmuel Valentin

#127 Chris Anderson                                 #147 Tom Windle

#160 Joc Pederson

Blog Kiosk: 8/27/2014 - Dodger Links - Offense Came Alive and Puig's Lack of Power

Roberto Hernandez had another quality start for the Dodgers yesterday afternoon, despite having runners in scoring position in four of his six innings.  He struck out three, walked two, gave up six hits and allowed only three earned runs.  I wonder if the results of his work in Blue has made a potential trade for Bartolo Colon less likely.  Graphic above via @Dodgers on twitter.

Furthermore, the Dodgers offense exploded against the Diamondbacks.  They racked up nine runs on fourteen hits, and every starting player, except for Puig, recorded a hit.  Six different players drove in a run, and Matt Kemp hit his sixteenth homer of the season.  Overall, the Dodgers displayed a well-balanced attack.  They were even helped along by a couple of Instant replays that went our way during the six run fourth inning.  Ken Gurnick at MLB.com has a good rundown on what happened there, here.

The Dodgers victory allowed them to maintain their 5.0 game lead ahead of the Giants.  Now, below are some links to check out:
Of course, the chances that the Dodgers will bring up Urias are roughly equivalent to the odds that the franchise will move back to Brooklyn. The reasons are many: he's barely 18, he's three levels away from the Majors, they don't want to add more stress on his arm, he doesn't have to be protected on the 40-man roster until after the 2016 season. If he did get the call, Urias would be the youngest player in the big leagues since Willie Montanez in 1966 and the youngest pitcher since Larry Dierker in '64.
Even with the scary corresponding timing between the hip injury and the power loss, we should be cautious about assigning the injury as the only cause for Puig’s struggles. There’s the whole “correlation does not mean causation” thing, and as Chad noted in the excerpt above, Puig’s mean fly ball distance almost matches last season. A few of the longer hits have been classified as line drives, too. This could just be regression to the mean, using arbitrary endpoints to describe a story. In other words, it could be a coincidence. Puig hasn’t been visually impacted by his hip in some time.
  • The other day Chris Olds at Beckett unveiled some early preview picks from Topps 2014 Heritage Baseball card set slated to come out in Early March.  Go here to check those out.  To the right is a Kershaw insert card.
  • Here's a scouting report fron FanGraphs.  Via Ron Shah at FanGgraphs, "Dodgers Righty Chris Anderson Flashes Big Stuff."
  • This is a very interesting article that I think is worth reading and studying for modern day Baseball card collectors.  Check out what Jeff Hwang at Sports Collectors Daily says about, "The Upside of the Modern Baseball Card."
In The Modern Baseball Card Investor, we used the term multiple expansion to describe the widening spread in values between premium-grade (PSA or BGS Gem Mint+ in modern issues) and ungraded cards, and also the spread between premium limited print, serialized parallels and base cards in Chrome Era modern issues (1993/1996-present), generally as a function of some combination of increasing demand due to growing star power; the card removal effect; and/or grade scarcity. Multiple expansion is not hypothetical conjecture, but a very real concept, with the clearest evidence of its existence present in the values of vintage issues.
So premium graded modern scarcities can and have already experienced multiple expansion in values with the added caveat that beta (to borrow a financial term for risk) is significantly higher due to the players standing in the hobby.  In other words, as long as a player is deemed to be a legitimate Hall of Fame-caliber player the values for their scarce issues should continue to be strong.
A great example of this are the prices for scarce and high-graded Michael Jordan cards.  I am constantly amazed at the values certain low-numbered cards regularly receive.  So, ten to twenty years from now can you imagine the kind of values a Mike Trout scarce rookie card might achieve if he continues being a monster at the plate, or a Clayton Kershaw?  I'm not saying you should run out and become a card investor, I just think it's interesting to think about.
On a side note, if I had the discretionary funds to spend significant dollars on cards I would focus my attention on vintage (in particular pre-war cards).  As the article intimates, there is less risk involved with those issues.  Modern scarcities may represent a potential higher return, but they also represent the greatest risk.
  • Following up on the above article, Tom Bartsch at Sports Collectors Digest notes that, "High Grades Lead to Skyrocketing Market Values for Modern Cards."  He notes that a PSA10 1971 Topps Steve Garvey rookie card recently sold for $25,393.  Wow!  I know that issue is extremely difficult in high grades, but that is amazing.  Another card to look at are the OPC Wayne Gretzky cards.  I've been told that they are absolutely on fire.

Blog Kiosk: 8/25/2014 - Dodger Links - Some Odds and Ends from the Weekend

Kevin Correia served up some beachballs yesterday afternoon before finally getting pulled from the game after just three innings of work.  Overall, he served up three home runs and seven runs total.  What disaster!

Adding insult to injury, the Mets recorded a triple play against the Dodgers in the sixth inning - all thanks to a far too aggressive Yasiel Puig.  Watch it below

Video Link:

This is the second triple play against the Dodgers this season.  The Cleveland Indians did it against us in July.  You would think this would be a bad omen, but as Jon Weisman at Dodger Insider explains it isn't.  The last time this happened to the Dodgers was in 1955; when they won their first World Series in franchise history.

BTW, Correia is expected to go to the bullpen once Ryu comes back, so we won't have to (hopefully) witness that again.  Also, I should note that Adrian Gonzalez continues his hot ways.  After leading the Dodgers with two hits, a home run and five RBI's in Saturday's victory, he recorded another three hits on Sunday; including a double.  The photo at the very top of Adrian was taken by Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2014Go here to check out more photos from yesterday.

Fortunately, this recent loss did not hurt us in the standings.  The Dodgers are 4.5 games ahead of the Giants.  Now, below are some links to check out:
  • ICYMI:  Hanley Ramirez was reinstated to the Dodgers roster.  Erisbel Arruebarrena was optioned to Rancho Cucamonga.  Arruebarrena should only be down for a short while.  He will definately be back up when the rosters expand.
  • Via Dustin Nosler at Dodgers Digest, "Chris Anderson’s late-season improvement reason for optimism."
The Dodgers made some mechanical changes with Anderson’s delivery a couple months ago, which could account for the improvement. One thing that hasn’t changed is his velocity. When I saw him in person, he was sitting at 93-96 MPH and topped out at 99 MPH. Friday night, Anderson hit 97 MPH a few times. As a pitcher who will live off his fastball, this is encouraging. He also has improved his off-speed pitches as the season has progressed. His slider will always be his go-to secondary offering, but his changeup has improved to the point where it could be a usable third pitch.
Campbell joined the Loons on June 20th and soon made his mark with the Dodgers affiliate. In his first five games, he had six scoreless innings giving up three hits while walking one and striking out five. On the season he has now pitched 29 innings over 22 appearances with an ERA of 1.55 and a WHIP of 1.00. He has struck out 36 and walked 8. He has yet to serve up a home run.

  • Watch a talk about the Negro Leagues and Kansas City Monarchs via Phil Dixon on CSPAN.  He speaks about the history of the Monarchs, the longest-running franchise in the history of baseball’s Negro Leagues. Mr. Dixon talks about the significance of the Kansas City Monarchs to the baseball world, fielding a number of future Hall of Fame players and inspiring several new innovations to the game, including the use of lights for night games. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum hosted this event.  Video here.
  • BTW, before the start of Sunday's game, Clayton Kershaw was presented with the trophy for the Warren Spahn Award for the 2013 season.  This award is given to the best left-handed pitcher in MLB by the Oklahoma Sports Museum.  Below is a photo of him holding it.  This is the second time he has won the Warren Spahn Award.  He also won it during his first Cy Young season in 2011.
