Weekend Autograph Opportunities: Jaime Jarrin, Dodgers Day at the Long Beach Expo and Paul LoDuca

Here are this weekends autograph opportunities and events throughout the Southland. As always, be sure to check the Blue Heaven Calendar for other events (a link can always be found on the tab at the top of this page, just left of center), and always confirm with the establishment. Everything is subject to change.  Please email me with any tips about upcoming events in Southern California.  As the rest of the week progresses I'll update this post with other events (if there are any) as I become aware of them.  Also, I don't always list every event below, so be sure to check my Calendar.  I always try to favor free signing events over paying events.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

Dodger fans are everywhere.  Pic above via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013 from San Francisco.
Boras hinted that Guerrero could be signed in the next couple of weeks. Asked if Guerrero would play winter ball in Latin America, Boras replied, “That will be up to the team that signs him. The Dominican League doesn’t start until mid-October. We expect he will be signed before then.”
"I cooked him a Southern dinner and he brought a signed softball and a replica of his Hall of Fame plaque," said Rhonda Johnson. "He encouraged Summer to stay in softball and told her that when she plays her first game back, he wants to be there. She was definitely inspired. I could see it in her eyes."

Blog Kiosk: 9/24/2013 - Dodgers Links - Happy Belated BDay Matt, Urinegate & the Postseason Broadcast Schedule

Happy belated birthday, Matt!  He turned 29 yesterday.  Pic above via Dodgers on tumblr.
I’ve written this many times before, because I believe it to be the unmistakable truth: Vin is the single most beloved person in Los Angeles history. That’s not a slight on John Wooden or Shirley Temple or whoever else would make the list. It’s simple testament to the way this man has touched three generations on a nightly basis. He’s part best friend, part lovable grandfather, part favorite teacher, all treasure.
  • "Dodger Postseason Broadcasts will feature Scully, Monday, Steiner, Jarrín, Valenzuela, Yñiguez," via a Dodgers press release.
Scully will call the first three innings and the final three innings of each Dodger postseason game on Dodgers Radio AM570 Fox Sports LA.   Steiner and Monday will call the middle three innings. Scully is in his 64th season with the club. He will be joined Steiner, in his 9th year with the club and Monday, in his 20th season as a Dodger broadcaster.

The Dodgers' Spanish-language radio broadcast on Univision America KTNQ 1020 AM will be led by Jarrín who is in his 55th season with the Dodgers. Valenzuela, color commentator for all home games and select road games for the Dodgers' Spanish radio broadcast, will call all postseason games along with Yñiguez. Valenzuela has been a part of the Dodgers' Spanish-language broadcast team for 11 seasons and Yñiguez is in his 16th season with the club.

"Dodger Talk" on Dodgers Radio AM570 will also continue throughout the postseason and will feature Kevin Kennedy, Jorge Jarrín and David Vassegh and they will be joined by Steiner and Monday.
  • "The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation presents Jazz on the Grass benefitting the Jackie Robinson Foundation October 6", via a Dodgers press release.
The Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation (LADF) announced today that JAZZ on the Grass (JOTG) tickets are available. JOTG is a benefit concert supporting the Jackie Robinson Foundation, which provides scholarships and comprehensive support services to minority students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. The event will take place at a private residence in Sherman Oaks on Sunday, October 6 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. NLDS Game 3 will air live at this event.
"There'll be guys that probably won't be happy about not being on the roster when it gets down to it," Mattingly said. "There's going to be some guys that have been around awhile and they're all involved, all competitive and all have made big contributions to what we do. But in the shorter setting, shorter number of games, days off, you go a different route."
The reason I am doing an about-face here is that it has come to my attention that one of the Dodgers players who jumped in the pool — and I will do him the favor of leaving his name out of this for now — openly and loudly bragged after leaving the pool about having urinated in it.

2013 Topps Heritage MiLB - The Dodgers' Minor League Base Cards

Last week, Topps released their newest Baseball card set - 2013 Heritage Minor League Baseball.  The set pays homage to the vintage 1964 Topps set by borrowing its design.  It also focuses solely on up-'n-coming stars within the Dodgers farm system.

This set includes the normal cast and characters you would expect.  You will find the fast rising infielder and younger brother to a current Major Leaguer Corey Seager with multiple different cards, and the impressive power-hitting outfielder Joc Pederson.

One name I didn't recognize was catching prospect Gorman Erickson.  He is card #3 below.  In fact, it appears that Topps didn't know much about him either.  They indicate that he's a pitcher, when every record I could find shows him as a defense-first catcher.  Of course, maybe Topps knows something nobody else does.  Maybe the Dodgers should convert him, like they did with Kenley Jansen, into a hard throwing pitcher.  After all, there is some precedent for that.

BTW, as you'll notice below Corey Seager has 2 different base cards in the set.  There is his normal card shown directly below, and a short-printed variation card of  having fun while warming up at the very bottom of this post.  I am unsure how scarce the variation card may be, so if your in the market I would suggest waiting a bit until adding it to your collection.

Check out the Dodger prospect base cards below.

#2 Gorman Erickson                               #95 Corey Seager

#141 Ross Stripling                             #169 Garrett Gould

#175 Joc Pederson                                #215 Chris Reed

Blog Kiosk 9/23/2013 - Dodgers Links - Vin Scully Way?

Andre Ethier pinch-hit on Sunday in San Diego.  He struck out.  The pic above is via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013.
  • "Vin Scully Way coming soon to Los Angeles?"  Via KABC.
"There's no honor that could be too great for Vin Scully, and I absolutely would love to rename a street for him. We'll look at a few around the stadium as a possibility," said Garcetti. "I know there's been a lot in the Twittersphere, a lot of people tweeting and Facebooking about this."

The question that prompted the discussion came in from a viewer, who happens to be Scully's daughter-in-law, asking to change Stadium Way to Vin Scully Way.
“The mayor of Los Angeles has a great deal more important things to do than name a street after me,” Scully said in the statement. “And if he is considering the idea, better the street should be named after Walter or Peter O’Malley than myself.”
  • There was one Dodger not in Arizona when they clinched the Western Division, but he had a good excuse.  Reliever Chris Withrow was home in Texas for the birth of his first child.  Congrats, Chris!  Arash Markazi at ESPN has the story.
  • Michael Young is eyeing retirement, via Ken Gurnick at MLB.com.
  • "Brian Wilson signing working out well," via Mark Saxon at ESPN.
  • "Dodgers' Kenley Jansen well-armed from both sides ," via Kevin Baxter at the LA Times.  Jansen does everything left-handed, except throwing a Baseball.
"When I was a kid I used to use a right-handed glove and I'd just put it on the other hand," says Jansen, who grew up in Curacao. "They almost started a fight with me. They said if I didn't stop doing that they would be beat me up."
  • Panini shared a bunch of preview pic of some autographed cards from their upcoming 2013 Hometown Heroes Baseball card set.  Check out the Steve Yeager card on the right.
  • Rabbithole on Reddit shared a great aerial pic of the very first San Francisco home game between the Dodgers and Giants.
  • Tony Jackson at Dodger Scribe notes that, "There is evidence Dodgers may be hitting their stride again".
  • Here's an AJ Ellis song about Dingers - "The Wonderful Thing about Dingers".
