Blog Kiosk: 3/5/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Clayton Kershaw looked pretty good his second time out this Spring. Per Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
Kershaw struck out four in three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks.
“There were things I did better in the first game, but I landed my curveballs for strikes better than the first game, which was good,” he said. “A little better command than the last game. Backed up some sliders that they hit hard to shortstop, but overall a good step.”
Unfortunately, his outing was overlooked a bit because of a Dodger-Giant rivalry that continues unabated.
As Kershaw was walking from the mound to the dugout after the third out, Giants third-base coach Ron Wotus passed by en route to his first-base dugout and said something that set off Kershaw.
.....
“He was upset that I hit him and that’s fine, it’s part of the game and he’s allowed to be upset. I didn’t say anything,” said Kershaw, who said he was hoping Turner had avoided a repeat of two years ago.

With Snider driving, they veered off the road into a ditch. They fortunately suffer only minor injuries. BTW, this was the third car accident a Dodger player had suffered over the past two months. First, Roy Campanella was paralyzed then Jim Gilliam was struck by a trailer truck. In 1958 the Dodgers signed 21-year old free agent outfielder Frank "Hondo" Howard. He would play seven years in Dodger Blue -- slashing .269/.326/.495/.822 with 123 homers and 382 runs driven in. In 1966 the players elect Marvin Miller, assistant to the president of the United Steelworkers, as Executive Director of the Major League Players Association.

Blog Kiosk: 12/13/2016 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Few photos tell a story like the one seen above.  Featured is Jackie Robinson with David Campanella, son of Roy, and a young lad named Larry Solomon (possibly the photographers son) at the "Seated Lincoln" memorial statue at the Essex County Courthouse in Newark, NJ. (eBay Auction Link) This photo provides a poignant look at the the man who broke the color barrier in Baseball paying homage at a statue that celebrates the man who helped free the country.  Per the description on the reverse:
Making the eighth annual pilgrimage to the statue of Abraham Lincoln, 9-year-old Larry Solomon places a wreath of flowers in the arms of the Great Emancipator.  Looking on are Brooklyn Dodger star Jackie Robinson and David Campanella, son of Dodger catcher, Roy Campanella.  Thousands of persons were flocking to the cemetery in Springfield, IL, and other Lincoln shrines to pay tribute to him on the 142nd anniversary of his birth, Feb. 12, 1951.
BTW, the pic was taken by Harlem based photographer Chick Solomon for ACME.  Below are more links to check out:
  • This Day in Dodger History:  In 1956 the Dodgers tried to do the unthinkable.  They announced the trade that would send legendary second baseman Jackie Robinson to the hated NY Giants for pitcher Dick Littlefield and $35,000. It would be voided the next day.  Jackie would then announce his retirement from the game a few weeks later.  In 2001 the Dodgers received Cesar Izturis and Paul Quantril in a trade with Toronto for Chad Ricketts and Luke Prokopec.  In 2003 the Dodgers traded Kevin Brown to the Yankees for pitchers Yhency Brazoban and Jeff Weaver.  In 2005 the Dodgers signed free agent veteran catcher Sandy Alomar.  Also, they traded troubled outfielder Milton Bradley and Antonio Perez to the A's for Andre Ethier on the same day.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training: Spring Game 7/Road Game 4

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.  See what they've written below.

------------------
LOS ANGELES DODGERS (4-1-1) at LA Angels (3-5)
Wednesday, March 9, 2016 – 1:10 p.m. MT | Tempe Diablo Stadium
LHP Scott Kazmir (0-0, 9.00) vs. RHP Jered Weaver (0-0, 0.00)
TV: None Radio: None

------------------
(Clayton Kershaw, pic via @Dodgers on twitter)

LET ME SEE YOUR HALO: The Dodgers (4-1-1) take on the Angels today in Tempe after beating the Cubs, 7-3, yesterday in Mesa. Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis posted multi-hit games and Trayce Thompson drilled a two-run triple to help break the game open in the seventh inning. Clayton Kershaw allowed one run and struck out five in 3.0 innings in his second start of the spring and Carlos Frias tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief in the victory.
  • The Dodgers won five of their six meetings against the Angels last year, sweeping the series at Dodger Stadium and winning two of three games in Anaheim.
FAMILIAR FACES: The Dodgers would like to welcome Ron Cey to Camelback Ranch, where he is making his annual visit as a guest instructor. The six-time All-Star played 12 of his 17 big league seasons with Los Angeles and was a tri-MVP of the 1981 World Series.
  • Former Dodger infielder Cesar Izturis also stopped by the Ranch today. Izturis played five of his 13 MLB seasons with the Dodgers from 2002-06.
NEW VOICES: New Dodger broadcasters Joe Davis and Tony Gwynn Jr. were in Glendale this morning in preparation for their new roles with the club:
  • Davis, 28, has been calling play-by-play on Fox Sports’ national coverage of college football, Major League Baseball and college basketball and will continue to do so while broadcasting 50 road games for the Dodgers this year. His first Spring Training broadcast will be on March 18, when the Dodgers take on the D-backs.
  • Gwynn Jr., 33 will join the Dodgers’ post-game show and DodgerTalk on AM 570 LA Sports and also serve as an analyst on SNLA. In an eight-year Major League career, he played for the Brewers, Padres, the Dodgers and the Phillies.
(Scott Kazmir, pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2016)

TODAY’S PROBABLE PITCHERS:
  • LHP Scott Kazmir will make his second start of the spring today against the Angels, for whom he pitched for from 2009-2010. In his Dodger debut against the Rangers on Friday, Kazmir allowed two runs on six hits in 2.0 innings of work in a no-decision. The three-time All-Star enters his 12th Major League season after posting a career-best 3.10 ERA last season with the Athletics and Astros.
  • RHP Mike Bolsinger impressed in his first Cactus League appearance, striking out two in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief on Friday against the Rangers. Bolsinger went 6-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 21 starts in three stints with the Dodgers last year after being acquired from Arizona on Nov. 22, 2014.
  • RHP Jharel Cotton tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in his spring debut on Friday against the Rangers. The 24-year-old, who is in his first big league camp, progressed from Single-A to Triple-A during the course of the 2015 season, going a combined 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 21 games (11starts) with Single-A Great Lakes, Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, Double-A Tulsa and Triple-A Oklahoma City. The native of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, was selected in the 20th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University.
  • RHP Chris Hatcher will be making his second appearance of the spring after allowing two runs (one earned) in 1.0 inning of work on Saturday against the D-backs. In his first year with the Dodgers in 2015, Hatcher went 3-5 with four saves and a 3.69 ERA in 49 games following his acquisition from the Marlins in a seven-player trade on Dec. 10, 2014.
  • LHP Luis Avilan is also expected to make his second Cactus League appearance today after striking out two batters in 1.0 scoreless inning against the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Avilan, who was acquired in a 2015 midseason trade with the Braves, boasted the fourth lowest percentage of inherited runners scored (16.1) among National League relievers last season.
  • RHP Jamey Wright will make his second appearance of the spring after striking out one in a scoreless inning on Saturday against Arizona. Wright, a 19-year MLB veteran, last pitched in the Majors in 2014, going 5-4 with a 4.35 ERA in 61 appearances with the Dodgers.
  • The Dodgers have three additional pitchers suiting up today from the minor league side: RHP Jeremy Kehrt (#84), RHP Logan Bawcom (#88) and RHP Felipe Gonzalez (#89).

A Couple of 2005 SP Autographed Dodgers' Cards

It has been awhile since I've shared some Dodgers autographed cards from my collection.  Featured here are a couple of 2005 Upper Deck SP Authentic cards of shortstop Cesar Izturis and relief pitcher Steve Schmoll.

Cesar Izturis has bounced around the league a bit since being traded for Greg Maddux in 2006.  He's played on 8 different clubs (including the Dodgers), and is about to join a new team this season in Cincinnati (on a minor league contract).  Cesar has always been a master with the glove, but has not been able to equal his breakout offensive year in 2004 when he hit .288 and recorded a .710 OPS.

Steve Schmoll has been out of Baseball since he last played for the Harrisonberg Senators in 2008 - a AA farm team of the Nationals.  Schmoll is currently an owner (along with his wife) and instructor at "Get Moving - Group Fitness & Personal Training" in Florida.  Check out their website here.

Collection: 2005 UD SPx Houlton & Izturis

I thought I would take a moment to share a couple more 2005 Upper Deck SPx autograph cards of some former Dodgers.  Check out the DJ Houlton and Cesar Izturis cards above and below.

There was a time when I was sure Izturis would be our long term solution at shortstop.  In 2004 he had a big season where he continued to shine on the field, but also added a little spark with the bat.  He hit .288 and had a respectable OPS of .770 as a lead-off hitter.  Izturis had nearly 200 hits while stealing 25 bases and scoring 90 times.  For his efforts the Dodgers signed him to a mutli-year/ multimillion dollar contract.  However, it was obvious by the next season that 2004 was a career year.  He came back to earth offensively, and was subsequently traded in 2006 for Greg Maddux.

DJ Houlton could never quite stick.  Not that the Dodgers didn't give him a bunch of opportunities.  He started 19 games in 2005, but looked no better then an end of the rotation pitcher.  Ultimately, he was a stopgap until someone better came along.  Today, Houlton has found his grove in Japan.  He has played there since 2008.  In five season in Japan he has a 47-33 record with a 3.32 ERA.

Dodgers Notes from Spring Training- Day 28

Throughout Spring Training the Dodgers PR department sends out helpful daily notes from Camelback Ranch, and I am happy to pass them along.

Milwaukee Brewers (7-9-1) at LOS ANGELES DODGERS (8-5-4)

Tuesday, March 20, 2012 – 1:05 p.m., Camelback Ranch - Glendale

RHP Chad Billingsley vs. LHP Chris Narveson

Spring Game 18/Home Game 9

Todays Starting Lineup:
Dodgers: SS, Ellis 2B, CF, Rivera LF, Ethier RF, 1B, Uribe 3B, C, Billingsley P
Brewers: Gomez 8, Morgan 9, Braun 7, Ramirez 5, Gamel 5, Kottaras 2, Conrad 4, Izturis 6, Narveson 1.
Upcoming Spring Training Schedule:

(Here is the cover of the 2012 Dodgers Media Guide, via twitter @Dodgers)
  • STRANGE BREW: Today is the first of three Cactus League games between the Dodgers and Brewers. Following this afternoon’s tilt, the two clubs will meet on Sunday in Maryvale and on Friday, March 30 at Camelback Ranch – Glendale. During the 2012 regular season, Los Angeles visits Milwaukee on its second road trip, beginning April 17. The Brewers make their annual visit to Chavez Ravine from May 28-31 this season.

  • BILLS ME: Dodger right-hander Chad Billingsley takes the hill for his fourth start of the spring this afternoon, following his stint last Thursday against the Royals in which he tossed 3.2 innings and gave up one run. Billingsley has given up four runs in 8.0 innings this spring to go along with four strikeouts and three walks. Billingsley will be followed to the mound by:

    ● RHP Josh Lindblom, who tossed a scoreless inning Saturday night and now has a 3.86 ERA (2 ER/4.2 IP) in four appearances this March.

    ● LHP Wilfredo Ledezma last pitched in a game on Friday, working a scoreless inning against the Rangers. Ledezma has allowed just one run over 4.1 innings this spring.

    ● RHP Ronald Belisario fired a scoreless inning Saturday night and will make his fourth appearance.

    ● RHP Ramon Troncoso has yielded just one run over 4.0 innings this spring, including three consecutive scoreless outings. The native of the Dominican Republic made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster from 2008-10.

(Pic via Jon SooHoo/ LA Dodgers 2012)

  • A FAMILIAR FACE: The Dodgers would like to welcome former shortstop Cesar Izturis to Camelback Ranch today. Izturis played in Los Angeles from 2002-06 and made the NL All-Star team in 2005. The native of Venezuela won a Gold Glove following the 2004 campaign and was a big part of the 2004 NL West champs. Izturis is looking to make the Brewers as a non-roster invitee following three seasons with the Orioles.

  • ON THE SIDE: Dodger relievers Javy Guerra and Scott Elbert appeared in a game yesterday and will work their first “back-to-back” today, facing live hitters on Field 2. In addition, infielder Jerry Hairston Jr. will play a game on the minor league side.

  • MOVING ON: The Dodgers lost just their second road Spring Training game yesterday, falling to the Indians in Goodyear, 4-3. Infielder Justin Sellers continued his hot-hitting spring, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Sellers is now hitting .385 (10-for-26) and his seven RBI are tied with Juan Rivera for the team high. On the mound, starter Clayton Kershaw went 5.1 innings and allowed just one run while striking out five. Kershaw’s first earned run of the spring caused his ERA to climb to 0.73.

    ● Los Angeles’ four draws this spring tie for the second-most all time by the club along with the 2002 and 2008 campaigns. The Dodger record for Spring Training ties was set in 2006, when the team went 15-13-5.

(Pic via Jon SooHoo/ LA Dodgers 2012)

  • GOLDEN CACTUS: The Dodgers enter play today with the third-best record in the Cactus League with an 8-5-4 mark, trailing the Athletics by 3.5 games and the Giants by 1.5 games in the standings. Los Angeles has the second-best team batting average among National League clubs this spring with a .283 mark and its 3.39 team ERA ranks third. The Dodgers are tied with St. Louis for the top NL on-base percentage with a .356 mark. Individually, Andre Ethier leads all National Leaguers with six doubles and leads the team with a .455 batting average (10-for-22) and a 1.045 slugging percentage in 10 games.

  • BREAK A LEG: The Dodgers would like to welcome former pitcher Ralph Mauriello to the ballgame today. Mauriello, 77, will sing the National Anthem before today’s contest.

  • TUCSON TUSSLE: This Friday, the Dodgers and White Sox will play a Cactus League game at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tucson with all the proceeds going to the Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Foundation. The Christina-Taylor Green Memorial Fund was established by Dodger scout John Green and his family to honor the life and memory of his daughter, Christina-Taylor, through charitable and educational projects that reflect and embody her interests, values and dreams. This is the second straight year that the Dodgers have played a benefit game in Tucson to help raise funds for the victims and families affected by the tragic events of January 8, 2011.

    ● The Dodgers also play a split-squad game against the Royals in Surprise on Friday, but the majority of the club’s regulars will head to Tucson with Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, Juan Rivera, Mark Ellis, A.J. Ellis, Dee Gordon, Tony Gwynn Jr. and Jerry Hairston Jr. volunteering to play in the benefit game.

Collection: Cesar Izturis Flair Autographics

I really enjoyed watching this guy play. He was arguably the best fielding shortstop I had ever seen wear Blue. He could move left and right with the grace and agility of a Ozzie Smith, and throw out batters in a manner I thought unbelievable. Unfortunately, his bat was not up to par.
Soon, Cesar Izturis would be traded to Chicago for Greg Maddux in 1996, and he would go on to sparkle with the glove for many more years in Baltimore, St. Louis and Pittsburgh.

Here is a 2006 Fleer Flair Showcase Autographics card of 'little' Cesar Izturis in my collection. I seem to recall Vin Scully always calling him that.

Ouch! Last Night Really Hurts.

What a dismal and terrible loss last night. The Dodgers had accumulated a 7 run lead on the back of a terrible Chicago defense. Freddie Bynum, the Cubs 2nd baseman, committed 3 errors in the first 3 innings, and should have received a 4th error if it where not for the good graces of last nights official scorer. Jacque Jones over-ran a ball in the outfield for another error. Even sure handed Cubs shortstop Cesar Izturis booted a play late in the 9th inning. Overall, the Chicago Cubs committed 6 errors in what started out as a laugher of a game.

Unfortunately, the Cubs would be laughing and smiling by the end of the game. They fought back, tied the game and eventually won on the back of a couple of Dodger errors and some timely hitting. Cesar Izturis, my favorite shortstop, slammed the final nail in the coffins with a walk-off single up the middle with a runner on 2nd base in the 11th inning.

The Dodgers fail to extend their lead and are lucky they didn't lose ground to the Padres.

This game should be a wake up call to all the Dodgers players. It's time to bear down. 18 games to go and nothing is assured.

What a Difference a Few Days Make

Four in a row, Baby! After going 1-13 the prospects for a successful season was looking bleak. Kent and Nomar went down with injuries. Then we just couldn't hit. Our starting pitching was faltering as tempers flared in the clubhouse. We had players on the roster who, seemingly, did not want to be there. But Baseball is a funny game.

Like life, Baseball takes you on a rocky road filled with many highs and lows. Sometimes everything falls into place, but sometimes nothing can go right. Success can be sweet, but failure is just as sour. Nevertheless, we all chose to continue to play and given enough effort we all know that good things can happen.

Well, the Dodgers are making the effort. They get rid of clubhouse whiner Odalis Perez. The reliable old horse we know as Giovanna Carrera joins the club after failing to catch on with another team and pitches well. Toby Hall comes in to provide some excellent back up work even though he believes he is a starter. Elmer Dessens rejoins the Dodger team after a trade to provide some stability. Jason Repko comes back from the DL after a long rehabilitation. The young and hot hitting Wilson Betemit, a former Atlanta top prospect, arrives from Atlanta, and Banny Baez takes a seat in the Braves bullpen. Caesar exits in exchange for future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux. The best available infielder, Julio Lugo, comes in for a late season rush. Finally, James Loney is called up to replace Nomar on the roster.

Then, like my dog, Miko, with a plate of hot food under her nose the Dodgers turn on a dime. Change is good.

The I Ching, "The Book of Changes", is an apt way to see how this team has evolved this season. Its
philosophy centers on the ideas of the dynamic balance of opposites, the evolution of events as a process, and acceptance of the inevitability of change.
We may have been down but that cannot last forever. Furthermore, once you accept change as a reality and move forward with that in mind it become inevitable that something will happen- something dramatic. We have seen first hand the ups and downs of the season. From long losing streaks to long winning streaks. We have seen how the team has grown- both good and bad. We have seen that when you accept inevitability of change good things can happen. Right now good things are happening.

The Dodgers score 10 runs on 17 hits to trample the Reds. Furcal goes 3 for 6, while driving in 4 (Including a clutch 3 run double in the 7th inning). Lofton gets 2 hits. Drew gets 3 hits of his own. Ethier gets a hit, a run and a RBI. Betemit hits his first homer- a 2 run shot. Martin scores twice on one hit and an RBI. Loney has 3 big hits. Even starting pitcher Sele contributed with the bat- getting a single.

Our pitching was just as solid. Sele continue to impress. Tomko, Beimel and Broxton finish off the game as the bullpen starts to coalesce into a solid relief staff. Everything is starting to look bright.

I hope that this is a start of a upswing that leads to something better than good.

Ned "The Busy Bee"

This has proven to be an exciting day for Dodger Baseball. We add a new 2nd baseman in Julio Lugo and future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux to anchor our starting rotation. In return we ship Caesar Izturis to the Cubs and send rookie prospects Joel Guzman and Sergio Pedrosa to Tampa Bay. Sergio went to my alma mater, Cal State Fullerton.

Lugo immediately starts at 2nd base until Jeff Kent returns. Who knows what happens when Kent is ready to play. I think Maddux will add poise and experience to a rotation that could use some leadership. His knowledge, skills and abilities will more than make up for any age related declines we may see in his performance this year.

Caesar, Pedrosa and Guzman where out of options with this new Dodger team. I am sad to see Caesar go. He remains my favorite defensive infielder. Pedrosa was not highly touted and may find some major league playing time in Tampa Bay. The promise of Guzman was overshadowed by the success of Ethier, Repko, Kemp and Loney. How many rookie prospect outfielders do we need?

Overall, I like the trades. We get some quality players for a title run without losing any of our top prospects. The future still remains bright. Ethier, Kemp, LaRoche, Loney, Billingsley, Hanrahan, Miller, Young, DeWitt, Abreau and Hu all stay. Good job Ned.

Trade Rumors

Apparently Colletti is feeling some heat. There is a rumor flying around about 3rd baseman Aaron Boone. "The Indians, in town to play the Twins, are talking about trading Aaron Boone to the Los Angeles Dodgers." What is this all about? Izturis is clearly better defensively and shall I dare say has better offensive potential. Maybe he's meant to be a back-up? I will add, though, that if he trades any of our prospects for Boone I'll go crazy. I mean total batshit crazy!

This is Our House!

With dejection and despair Angels fans marched out of the stadium after the 8th inning. It was quite a sight to see. A sea of red flowing up and out towards the exits like a fresh wound from a prickly needle. Not even the ridiculous Rally Monkey stayed. He went home too, and in his shame he decided to not show his face. It was just another beautiful Friday night in Southern California as the Los Angeles Dodger ran over the helpless Angels of Anaheim , 6-1.

What a game. I was seated in the upper reserve section just a bit towards third base in the 3rd row. These where great seats and provided an awesome view.

I saw Nomar continue his National League dominance with 2 doubles. Kenny Lofton showed he still had game as he twice singled sharply to center. Caesar is proving that he is a 3rd base gold glove candidate. To be not outdone, rookie Andre "The Giant" Ethier went 3 for 4 with a monstrous 2 run home run to center field, just passed the outstretched arms of Chone Figgins. Four hundred plus feet baby! I had fun, my friends seated to my right and left had fun and my new friends in Blue all around the stadium in attendance had fun. It was just a fun night of Dodger baseball.

I knew the Blue Army was in attendance when in the early part of the game chants of "Let's Go Dodgers" could clearly be heard by all. Imagine that. In a sea of red all we could hear was the glory of Blue. The fans had come out to cheer our team and our team responded with a clear victory.

I've got some photos that I will post later on so stay tuned. I'll also have more photos for this afternoons game. I'm heading over to Angel Stadium with a large contingent of friends. Thanks Mike! He's an old friend from elementary school (Do people really have friends from that far back?) who decided in all his grace and benevolence to foot the bill for the game for the whole group. We will be a mixture of Red and Blue fans so it won't be a united front. Nevertheless, I can't wait.

BTW, if you hear obnoxious chants of "This is Our House, " then you know its me. Say hi and join in. "This is Our House!"
