Blog Kiosk: 2/4/2020 - Dodgers Links & News - Some Odds and Ends

Check out these Brooklynites celebrating with Carl Erskine in the above UP press photo (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
Erskine Does It Again -- Brooklyn, NY: Dodger pitcher Carl Erskine is congratulated by admiring fans, after the trim Indiana righthander hurled the second no-hit game of his career, a brilliant 3-0 win over the New York Giants here May 12th. Erskine's other no-hitter came against the Chicago Cubs on June 19, 1952. Erskine's feat makes him the 17th pitcher in Major League history to have pitched at least two no-hitters, and by coincidence, the Major League's last no-hitter was pitched exactly one year ago on this date by Chicago's Sam Jones in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. 5/12/1956. Blog Kiosk: 7/30/2019 - Dodgers Links - Some Odds and Ends

Here's an up-close look at a Dodger stealing home. Featured above is a INP press photo, dated May 16, 1946, of Dodger great Pete Reiser (eBay auction link). Per the descriptor on the reverse:
The Dodgers great base stealer Pete Reiser shows his style in this sequence of photos at Ebbets Field today. With Stan Rojak at bat, Reiser makes his dash for home. He leads the league in steals and stealing home has become his specialty.

Blog Kiosk: 9/4/2016 - Dodgers Links - De Leon, Kershaw, Puig, Bellinger and Josh Reddick

It's great to see Josh Reddick turn on the heat.  Last night he recorded his first three hit game for the Dodgers - knocking out two singles and his first home run in Blue.  Per AJ Cassavell and Ken Gurnick at MLB.com:
"Took long enough," Reddick said of his home run. "I finally got it out of the way. Just to contribute, that's something I've wanted to do for a month now. I hope I'll be able to do it the rest of the year."
Reddick is on a little four game hitting streak.  Over that period he has recorded seven hits in thirteen at-bats, but only one extra base hit (yesterdays home run).  During his first 23 games as a Dodger he was slashing a woeful .139/.200/.152/.352, with just eleven hits in 79 at-bats.  Although we certainly have yet to see the best Reddick has to offer you've got to like that he's starting to perform.  Via Rich Hill when speaking about Reddick's evening:
"That was awesome. Get used to seeing it here. It's exciting."

Blog Kiosk: 5/26/2015 - Dodger Links - Bolsinger, Kershaw and a Potential Uribe Trade

Rumors are swirling.  The gossip is reaching a fever pitch.  One man, who has had his ups and downs in Los Angeles, may be heading out of town, and I suspect many fans will be less than pleased - although, they'll likely be very understanding of the move.  Via Ken Rosenthal on twitter and encapsulated by Jeff Todd at MLB Trade Rumors, "Dodgers, Braves Discussing Swap Of Uribe, Callaspo."
The Dodgers are in discussions with the Braves about a deal that would send third baseman Juan Uribe to Atlanta and deliver Alberto Callaspo to Los Angeles, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports (Twitter links). Other, “lesser names” would also be included in a deal, per the report.
The idea of Uribe being sent off to Atlanta is a little hard to stomach since he's been such a great team player for the Dodgers.  He had a rough go of it his first couple of years in Los Angeles, but continued to carry-on with a smile on his face and a hop in his step.  He never pouted or complained.  Instead, he cheered on and contributed when he could.  Eventually his skill shined through, and he became an integral part of the team the past two years.

Unfortunately, the club is looking to inject some younger blood, and that leaves Uribe out on a lurch.  They recently signed Hector Olivera out of Cuba to eventually man the hot-corner, and there are plenty of options on the bench and in the minors ready to stake their claim in the club.

As always rumors like this may come to pass, but I think it's fair to say that we will eventually see Juan Uribe traded before the season is done.  If not to the Braves today, then likely somewhere else soon.  In fact, a new update indicates that the deal for Callaspo has fallen through due to his rejection of the trade.  But like I said above, we should expect a deal to made sometime soon.

In the "this is awkward" moment, Juan Uribe is slated to receive his very first Dodger bobblehead on Saturday, June 11th, so I wonder what happens if he is traded before this date.  Do fans get the bobblehead anyway?  Check out a pic of the planned bobble on the right.

The above pic at the very top is via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2015.  Below are some links to check out:
The season is still young and Bolsinger’s starting role with the Dodgers’ rotation is even younger. But we’re beginning to get a sense for why this 27-year-old castaway Diamondbacks prospect has succeeded so far this season: A fairly dramatic change to his arsenal, command of his cut-fastball and the element of surprise that comes along with his curveball — all things that have enabled him to induce weaker contact, fewer balls in play falling for hits and an improved strikeout-to-walk ratio.
"There's satisfaction in that we're in first place and we're playing good ball," said Ethier, who had a bases-loaded walk and has six homers after only four all of last year. "I've had a little bit of a hand in contributing to that, that's where I get my satisfaction. Just get to be in the mix and help out with what we're doing."
It appears as though much of Kershaw's problems stem from poor location, something that a pitcher as talented as he is, with stuff as good as his, should be able to overcome.

    Happy Festivus Day!

A Festivus for the rest of us!

In honor of this Seinfeld holiday I felt it would only be proper to air some grievances.
    • To the anti-Puigmania fans - why can't you enjoy the story of a young man who escaped Cuba to make something of himself?  He should be welcomed and celebrated instead of demeaned.
    • To the Diamondbacks - just stop whining about the Dodgers pool party, and instead field a better team so you can celebrate in the same way.
    • Please stop pitching the David Price rumors.  I do not believe for a second it's going to happen.  The Dodgers have been very clear about their plans to rebuild the farm system, and there's no reason not to believe them.  They've done everything they said they would do.
    • Dear Cardinal fans, your team is not the beacon of Baseball purity and perfection in the league.
    • To fans worried about the Dodgers not re-signing Clayton Kershaw yet - please take a deep breath and calm down.  There's no reason to be worried.  Just be patient.
    • That last one reminds me about my biggest pet peeve.  In today's world of instant communication the virtue of patience gets lost.  Everyone wants what they want now, and it's an attitude that is irksome.  Everyone needs to take a chill pill.
If you have any other grievances please share them. I'm moving on to the "Feats of Strength." Anyone know where I can find Frank McCourt this holiday season?

Blog Kiosk: 7/2/2013 - Dodgers Links - One of Puig's Attempted Defections and Where is Grady Little Now?

Above is a look at July's issue of Dodgers Magazine featuring Adrian Gonzalez, pic via twitter @Dodgers.
    • Dustin Nosler at Feelin' Kinda Blue has an interesting report on the International Signing period that starts today.  Apparently, we have our eyes on a kid named Lucas Tirado.
    • True to the Blue has the early scoop on the 3 new Nike Yasiel Puig T-Shirts.  They are fabulous.  To the right is one of them.
    • All of the talk yesterday was about a potential trade bringing Carlos Mormol, Garza or Utley to the Dodgers.  I refuse to spend any time thinking or writing about these or any "trade rumors".  I've made the mistake in the past in thinking there was merit to the discussion, but at the end of the day most of it is just a useless mental exercise.  Besides, most of it is bunk, anyway.  The above causes me to point to a great article by Bill Shaikin of the LA Times called "Dodgers will spend again to improve, but improving farm system is key".  He shares a quote from team President Stan Kasten.
"There are no shortcuts. I also think the direction we pursued last year — established veterans, looking at big free agents — we are going to move away from that.

"I know people think we are in this deal, in that deal, and in any deal. That is not what the next phase of this franchise requires."
His way of thinking reminds me of how the Kings established a long term plan 5 to 6 years before they eventually won the cup.  It's all about Prior Proper Planning Preventing Piss Poor Performance.  Clearly, we are still in the early stages, and I look forward to seeing how everything develops.
    • Via Jeff Passan at Yahoo, "Coast Guard crew reflects on time with Yasiel Puig during attempt to defect to U.S."  This is a must read!
One night, the gravity of the situation depressed Puig. Torres could tell the toll his impending return to Cuba was taking, so he went to his locker and retrieved a pair of tennis balls. He brought them to Puig, along with a Sharpie, and asked him to sign.

Carlos Torres was the first American to get Yasiel Puig's autograph, looped in perfect cursive with his number for Cienfuegos: "Y Puig 14."
“I started to feel the same way after a five-game losing streak as I felt after a five-week winning streak,” he says. “I knew that wasn’t right. I’d been going for a lot of years. And at that time I thought, I don’t want to do this anymore.”
    • "Puig's electrifying debut month"  Yasiel Puig had a record-setting first month in the bigs, his 44 hits second in MLB history in that span after Joe DiMaggio.  Check out their video below celebrating it.

I too thank James Loney.  Pic via twitter @Dodgers.
10 years ago today, Odalis Perez had quite a day for himself. A decade ago, he barely needed his teammates to win a game – which is nice because they barely helped him.
    • Jonah Keri at Grantland writes, "The Dodgers Make it Rain."
The Dodgers don't give a rat's ass about supposedly smart versus supposedly dumb ways to build a roster. They're perfectly cool with losing the dollars-per-WAR championship. And if actions and words are any indications, they don't care about any damn luxury tax either. They want to win, they have money, and they're going to spend it.
Yeah, sure, I’m always open to talks. I’ve had a great time here. I love the guys and I love everything about L.A. I’ll be here for two more years regardless. There’s no deadline or anything, so that’s good.

Josh Beckett Has Been Claimed... Was it the Dodgers?

Per MLB Trade Rumors, Josh Beckett has also been claimed, but the team is still an unknown.  Considering the recent news that Adrian Gonzalez was claimed by the Dodgers, it might not be too much of a stretch to believe that they did the same with Beckett.

Could something be in the works?

Per a tweet from Sean McAdam of CSN.
    (twitter link)

    UPDATE:

Confirmed!  The Dodgers have also claimed Josh Beckett, per Sean McAdam.
    (twitter link)

Now, my mind is reeling.  Has a trade already been in the works?  Is Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett coming over for some salary relief for the Red Sox and some prospects- maybe Jerry Sands, Zach Lee and/or Allen Webster?  Is all 3 too much?  How about two of those three?

Here are Beckett's career stats from Baseball Reference:

    Goodness... Dodgers Claim Adrian Gonzalez

With news recently circulating that the Red Sox placed 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez on waivers, we have just gotten word from Bill Shaikin on twitter that the Dodgers have filed a claim for him.
    (twitter link)

Although this is something to take note of, it's hardly something to be excited about.  After all, we've gone through this before (see Cliff Lee), and at this point there is nothing that leads me to believe any deal will get done here.  Take note that Ken Rosenthal mentioned earlier this month that any trade concerning Gonzalez would have to be a blockbuster; i.e. you better be willing to trade some major pieces along with taking some of our junk.
    (twitter link)

So, does anything get done?  Would you take a couple of Red Sox dogs to get Gonzalez?  And if so, do you give up the farm if you do take their under-performers?  What if they want Billingsley?  Do we make them take Loney?  What if Andre Ethier were to go to Boston?

Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 8/8/2012 - Vin Scully's 1st Autographed Insert Baseball Card!!!!

This is the MUST-HAVE card of the century.  Panini America is releasing a Vin Scully autographed card in their 2012 Cooperstown Baseball card set.  Only 100 of these cards will exist.  This is the 1st Scully "on-card" autographed card ever made.  Wowzers!  See more information here.
The Dodgers not only claimed Lee, they made offers of players for him. (Colletti and Kasten wouldn't talk about waivers or Lee, since waivers are allegedly a secret and Lee is still a Phillie, but others confirmed their involvement.)
    • Emma at Crzblue's Dodger Blue World relays a great story about a found kitten near the Dodgers parking lot before yesterdays game and the man who saved him.  There is something wonderful about animal rescue stories.  BTW, Michael, the man who went out of his way to save the kitty, has named him Koufax.
    • Jim Tracy comments on Vin Scully's call of his expletive filled tirade the other day, via Troy Renck at the Denver Post.
    • "Juan Uribe's Days Could be Numbered", writes Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times.
"Whatever happens, there's nothing I can do about it," Uribe said. "I can't control that. If they want to trade me or do something else, that's something I can't control. The decision is for them to make. I'm here to do whatever they want me to do."

    Four in a Row, Baby!

I guess it shouldn't be a surprising that as the team gets healthier, they start winning a little more often.

This past weekend, the Dodgers went on the road and swept the Mets.  They are now in the midst of a 4 game winning streak, and I can't help but think we should be thanking our lucky stars. Kemp and Ethier look healthy, and it's getting obvious that their bats were the missing ingredient for our offense.  It's amazing the protection they can provide to our lineup.

The Dodgers hope to extend their winning ways tonight against St. Louis.  On the mound will be recently reinstated pitcher Chad Billingsley.

    ----------------------

Following up on what I wrote above, Chad Billingley is now back from the Disabled List.  Per a Dodger press release:
The Los Angeles Dodgers today reinstated RHP Chad Billingsley from the 15-day disabled list and optioned RHP Josh Wall to Triple-A Albuquerque. Wall, 25, made his Major League debut yesterday and picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief against the Mets.

Billingsley last pitched on July 7 at Arizona and missed his last start on the DL with right elbow inflammation. Billingsley, who will celebrate his 28th birthday on Sunday, reached the 1,000 career strikeout milestone in his previous start, becoming just the 12th Los Angeles Dodger pitcher to do so.
    ----------------------

BTW, if you don't already know, the coveted starter Ryan Dempster is headed to Atlanta.... or, maybe not.  The rumors and speculation about a completed trade between the Cubs and Braves traveled all over the internet this morning, only to be stopped in its tracks by the centerpiece of the supposed trade.  Ryan Dempster said, "hold your horses!"
    (twitter Link)

It's impossible to know what has happened, but considering that Dempster has the right to refuse a trade you would think he would be aware that something was afoot.  Based on his comment above he is totally clueless about the events at hand-  which makes me believe that this morning early reports were a bunch of bunk.

This is why I hate trade rumors.

Here's a nice view of Dee Gordon's thumb.  He had his cast taken off recently, pic via instagram.  Below is Gordon's cast- complete with signatures from a bunch of young Dodger fans.  Check out my short post about a young Dodger fan named Christian who signed Dee Gordon's cast this past Thursday at the open workout.

If you are looking to alter your experience through the use of a society-approved liquid drug, then the stadium is ready to provide. Their prices and sizes are very pocket-friendly: you can get a 24-ounce ‘tall boy’ domestic draft beer for $10.25, which is better value than most stadiums provide. These are large beers for a good price.
Ryan Dempster’s first choice is the Los Angeles Dodgers and his second is the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources.
Support for the guys in the locker room. It’s one of the key components LA’s hockey players claim helped them achieve success this season as well. During a rough first half and while steamrolling their way through the playoffs, players never turned on each other inside the Kings locker room.

“That’s the easiest thing to do during the season,” shared Ethier. “When you’re with a group that works so closely over the years, it’s easy to turn on each other. You get sick and tired of each other when you’re (together) for six months. So, it’s something where you can’t turn on each other. When things get tough, you just have to pull for each other even more than when things are going well. That’s something you have to remind yourself of and make sure you’re always available when teammates are struggling.”

Q: Tom, in the new book 'The Hall of Nearly Great', there's a brief mention of how a column that you wrote about Don Sutton, in which he was quoted as calling Reggie Smith the team's best player, in part contributed to a locker room fistfight between Sutton and Steve Garvey. Are there any details you can provide?
A: Sure. Sutton saved my career. I was a kid reporter. I quoted him accuracy in a feature on Smith, but the L.A. Times picked up a small part of my story and pushed two Sutton quotes together __making it look like one semi- controversial quote (knocking Garvey as not really the team leader). Garvey brought the L.A. Times story to Sutton's locker. They got in a REAL fight. Black eyes. Busted lips, bloody noses. That night, Howard Cosell __the jackass__ had them both on national TV (seperately), both looking like they'd gone 15 rounds with Ali, and "asked" Sutton, "Don, I've known you a long time. I know you would never say anything like that about Steve Garvey." (That's a paraphrase. Cosell was still a horse's ass.)
I think, "My career is over. Sutton will deny the quote __and he probably should because the LA Times screwed it up. Nobody will believe me. Everybody will believe Sutton, Cosell and the LA TImes."
Sutton looks into the camera: "I said it."
    That defines a "standup guy."
There's a Dodger back story, of which I was blissfully unaware at the time, but I still can't tell that, I don't think. But Sutton was a champ in all respects.

With both Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier back in the lineup it's nice to see their tools in their proper place.  Pic via twitter @Dodgers on instagram.
Yes, they're interested, but they appear to be something of a longshot to make a deal with the Phillies. The Dodgers have spoken to the Phillies about Hamels, sources said Sunday, but the Phillies aren't thrilled with the players the Dodgers could offer in return.
"Going forward, I still feel good about us offensively and defensively, that's the bright spot," Capuano said, adding that the Dodgers have had "two tough losses, but we'll get after the Phillies."

    Another Trade Rumor?

BTW, I've just been notified that this twitter is a fake account.  So, I suppose you should disregard this post.  On the other hand, Jennings is the kind of player I would prefer over Carlos Lee so I guess I'll chalk this up to wishful thinking.  Right on the heals of the failed Carlos Lee trade comes a fresh rumor that the Dodgers are now talking with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Apparently, young and speedy outfielder Desmond Jennings is in our sights.  Per ESPN analyst Terry Francona on twitter:
    (twitter link: @FranconaESPN)

Who knows if this deal gets done, but at least we know Jennings can't say no.  He's a young player who would be under team control until 2018.  Desmond bats lead off, has a good glove, and hasn't committed an error in his short MLB career.  Furthermore, I think I would prefer adding a young bat like Jennings over a aging veteran like Lee.  Below are stats for Jennings, via Baseball Reference.

Aaron Harang is quite the artist.  Via Patrick O'Neal's twitter, above is what Harang drew on the Dodgers white board.

    • Chad Moriyama follows up Angert's MLB story, above, by calling it lazy.
Whenever a team achieves something above what was expected, the media generally takes the easy way out and attributes the success to chemistry or some other intangible. It’s a simple justification for a complicated reality, and it basically amounts to saying, “We were wrong, but not actually wrong, we just couldn’t see the things that nobody else could have seen either!” But that’s lazy to me, and it’s almost completely devoid of responsibility.
I don't entirely disagree, but I do think it's far too easy to discredit the importance of leadership within a team environment.  And I'm not just talking about generalship from the field, either.

    Thome... Garland... Really?

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated is saying we just got Jon Garland from the Diamondbacks and Jim Thome from the White Sox. Wow! If true, this is quite a move. I wonder who we traded.

    Update:
Vin Scully has just confirmed it! Thome is a Dodger for a player to be named later! That's something else. Wow!

This is a aggressive move. Will he be playing some first base? Platoon with Loney? Our designated big bat off the bench from the left side?

    Update 2:
Vin now confirms that Jon Garland is a Dodger. No word on what we traded for Garland.

    Update 3:
Denver Post also confirms the Garland trade and adds that the Rockies got Jose Contreras. Also, they speculate that Arizona was looking for a grade B prospect in return for Garland.

    Update 4:
Jon says, from the Chicago Tribune, that we traded Class A ballplayer Justin Fuller ans cash for Thome. As Jon wrote, "a pure giveaway." Smells like the Manny trade. Instead of giving away a clubhouse problem like the Red Sox, the White Sox shed some salary. After all, picking up Peavy and Rios was not cheap. Chicago also traded pitcher Contreras to Colorado.

    Update 5:
    AZCentral says
"The Diamondbacks are paying the rest of Garland's salary. That is, whatever is left this year plus whatever the option amount ends up being. He has about $1 million left this year, meaning they are kicking either $2 million or $3.5 million into this deal."
With Arizona pitching in some sizable money expect a decent prospect to be going their way.

    Sherrill a Dodger

It appears that the Dodgers have shored up their relief staff with the addition of Orioles left handed closer George Sherrill. Of course, this is still pending official confirmation.
MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports that the Dodgers acquired George Sherrill for Josh Bell and righty Steve Johnson.
This is a great pick-up. He should add some depth and solidify an already good bullpen- they just need a little help to get us over the hump.

    Inge?

During this Spring there were rumors that the Dodgers were looking hard at Detroit's Brandon Inge. Since we appeared to have a couple of horses already vying for a spot at third base these rumors appeared baseless. Now, with the recent freak injuries to Nomar and LaRoche these rumors are sure to come back. The Detroit News picks up the story.
An injury to Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra has led to speculation that the team may be interested in the Tigers' Brandon Inge..."We'll continue to see if we can figure out (a replacement) from within or outside," general manager Ned Colletti said Wednesday.
Now, do we really want to do a trade? Is Inge the answer, or is he just an expensive temporary backstop? A competing Detroit newspaper, Detroit Free Press, counters The Detroit News.
If Brandon Inge is traded before Opening Day, it probably won’t be to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers intensified their internal discussions about adding an infielder after learning Wednesday that Nomar Garciaparra has a microfracture in his right hand, but Inge is not high on their list of trade targets.

Not surprisingly, his salary is the biggest reason.
Wow. Inge is owed $19.1 million til 2010. That's a lot of money.

    A-Rod Is Off The Table

At least we don't ever have to hear about A-Rod and his crazy contract demands again.
"Rodriguez -- minus agent Scott Boras -- initiated talks that, according to a baseball source, will return Rodriguez to the Yankees under a 10-year, $275-million contract."
The big negative is that this may cause the value of Cabrera to increase to heights unacceptable to the Dodgers. Heck, i consider many of the names already thrown around unacceptable to this Dodger fan.
