2015 Donruss Baseball - The Dodger Insert, Relic and Autograph Cards

Here is a look at the rest of the 2015 Donruss Dodger cards found in the set.  Last week I showed the base and variation cards.  Below are all of the insert, relic and autographed cards. 

The "Rated Rookie" die-cut card directly below is a bit confusing.  I say that because it doesn't appear to show up on a checklist (see that here).  It doesn't look anything like any other card in the set (especially the "Rated Rookie" portion of the base set).  On the other hand, it may very well be a parallel to the "Rated Rookie" subset found in the base set.  The die-cut card is numbered to #/750 copies and the Silver Die-Cut parallels are said to have the same print run.  So, it's more than likely that this is that card.  Since it looks nothing like the base version it's hard to really know for sure.

There are four different Dodger variation cards available.  See them all below.  BTW, I show both the normal card and its short printed variation.  Also, with both 'Sparkle' cards I include additional photos showing the exact location of the 'Sparkle.'

2014 Topps Update Baseball - All the Dodger Base Cards

Featured here are all of the Dodger base cards found in packs of 2014 Topps Update.  This late-season companion set to Topps flagship Baseball card product was release last week and it shows many of the newly acquired Dodgers added at the end of the season.  It also includes All-Star cards and some rookies.  Go here to check out a complete checklist of the set.

Clearly, the best of the bunch is the Justin Turner card.  Check it out directly below.  What a phenomenal photo for arguably the most impactful player on the team.  I have to consider it one of the best Dodger cards of the year.  The Zack Greinke card, on the other hand, might be the goofiest looking card of the year.  Those All-Star caps look hideous.

BTW, there are a bunch of short-printed Dodger cards available; including sparkle and photo variations.  I'll have pics of all of them to share tomorrow.

Blog Kiosk: 9/24/2014 - Dodger Links - One Game Away

All hail Justin Turner!

The man initially thought to be a lesser version of Nick Punto has proven he is more than just that.  He is a beast, a monster in his own right, a sparkplug who can lead the team to victory.

Last night he started the game with a home run to left, then finished off Giants starting pitcher Bumgarner with his second home run of the evening in the eight inning.  Ole!  The Dodger win!

BTW, birthday boy Matt Kemp hit a two-run home run, as well. As for the pitching, Zack Greinke threw an eight inning gem; allowing just two runs while striking out five and scattering six hits.  Kenley Jansen recorded his 44th save of the year.

Welcome to the Blue, Joc and Yimi! - The First Round of September Call Ups

It's September 1st, Labor Day, and besides an afternoon of barbecue and family it is also a time when every Major League team expands their roster.  This afternoon, as reported widely on the 'net, the Dodgers have called up several players.  They include Alexander Guerrero, Tim Federowicz and Chris Perez (who returns from a rehab assignment).  Furthermore, coming up to the Dodgers for the very first time in their professional careers are star outfield prospect Joc Pederson and righthanded reliever Yimi Garcia.

UPDATE: Per a Dodgers press release, Carlos Triunfel has been designated for assignment to make room for Joc. 

Joc Pederson is probably the most anticipated call up of the bunch.  He is considered to be the Dodgers top minor league prospect, and will likely have the eyes of the world watching every step he takes.  He is a lefthanded slugger with five legit tools.  He can hit for average, hit for power, has excellent speed on the basepaths, has a great defensive centerfield game and a solid arm strong enough to cause baserunners to think twice.  It should be exciting to see if he can move his game to the Major League level.  Unfortunately, you shouldn't expect to see him play much this month, but he'll surely get a bit more than just a cup of coffee.

Yimi Garcia is a righthanded reliever who has recorded some impressive Minor League numbers.  This season in Albuquerque he struck out 69 while only walking 18.  Last year, while in Chattanooga, he did even better.  He struck out 85 and walked only 14 batters. His best pitch is clearly a slider that he uses to punch batters out.

BTW, it has been also been reported by Pedro Moura of the OC Register that Carlos Frias, Miguel Rojas and Erisbel Arruebarrena will be called up to the Dodgers tomorrow.  So, stay tuned for confirmation of that later on.

The Los Angeles Dodgers today recalled catcher Tim Federowicz (#26), right-handed pitcher Yimi Garcia (#63) and infielder/outfielder Alex Guerrero (#7) from Triple-A Albuquerque and selected the contract of outfielder Joc Pederson (#65) from Albuquerque. The club also reinstated right-handed pitcher Chris Perez from the 15-day disabled list (bone spurs, right ankle) and designated infielder Carlos Triunfel for assignment.

Federowicz has appeared in 18 big league games in two stints with the Dodgers this year, but tore up the Pacific Coast League with a .328 batting average, 26 doubles, 14 homers and 48 RBI in 78 games with Albuquerque. The 27-year-old posted a .297 batting average with runners in scoring position (22-for-74) for the Isotopes this season.

Garcia, 24, will be making his Major League debut after going 4-2 with five saves and a 3.10 ERA in 47 appearances with Triple-A Albuquerque. He limited right-handed hitters to a .200 batting average (28-for-14) and posted a 2.84 ERA (6 ER/19.0 IP) in 14 games after the All-Star break. The native of the Dominican Republic is in his sixth professional season after being signed as a non-drafted free agent on Jan. 29, 2009.

Guerrero will be making his first appearance on the big league roster since appearing in both games Down Under during MLB's Opening Series in Sydney. The 27-year-old hit .329 with 15 homers and 49 RBI in 65 games with Albuquerque, including a .356 batting average with runners in scoring position (26-for-73).

Pederson, who is making his first appearance on the Major League roster, was honored as the 2014 Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player, the league's Rookie of the Year and as an outfielder on the All-PCL Team, after becoming just the fourth player in the 112-year history of the Pacific Coast League to post a 30-home run/30-steal season. The 22-year-old batted .303 with 30 steals (T-7th, PCL), 17 doubles, four triples, 33 homers (1st, PCL) and 78 RBI in 121 games with Triple-A Albuquerque this year.

Perez last pitched in a Major League game on Aug. 3 against Chicago-NL and made five rehab appearances with Single-A Rancho Cucamonga.

Triunfel played in 12 games in five stints with the Dodgers this season, his first year with the organization.

Blog Kiosk: 8/20/2014 - Dodger Links - Dodgers Win, Grienke Questionable and Orel's Ice Bucket Challenge

The Dodgers eeked out a victory last night against the Padres.  After a miserable start that saw him give up three early runs, starter Kevin Correia settled down to give the Dodgers a chance.  All they had to do was score some runs.  As you know, of course, that's been easier said than done.  Fortunately, several Dodgers in the lineup where up to the task.

The middle of the Dodgers batting order woke up and got the job done.  Matt Kemp hit two doubles, Justin Turner whacked two doubles of his own and Carl Crawford blasted a home run to go along with two singles.  They punished Padres starter Ian Kennedy for six runs and eventually held on for an 8 to 6 victory. Of note, the very last play of the game had to be reviewed by the umpires.  Jedd Gyorko singled to Puig, who subsequently threw home to get the advancing runner, Abraham Almonte.  Seeing this, Almonte rounded thirdbase and headed back, but was picked off.  Adrian Gonzalez had cutoff Puig's throw and nailed him.  After a umpire review he was called out to end the game.  Watch it here.

The Dodgers now have a four 4.5 4.0 (reduced since the Giants won their appeal) game lead over the Giants.  Here are some more links to check out below.

• ICYMI: The Dodgers called up amateur pugilist Erisbel Arruebarrena from AAA and sent Carlos Triunfel back to Albuquerque.  Per a Dodgers press release:

Arruebarrena most recently played in three rehab games for the Rookie-level AZL Dodgers (right shoulder soreness), going 4-for-11 with two doubles, two homers and four RBI, and has batted .333 with three doubles, two triples, a homer and 11 RBI in 26 games with the Isotopes this season. The 24-year-old has gone 5-for-16 (.313) with two RBI in eight games in two previous call-ups with the Dodgers.

Welcome to the Blue, Carlos Frias!

So, we're only finding out now that Dodger veteran reliever Chris Perez has been pitching with pain?  Come on, guys!

It has just been announced that Chris Perez is going on the 15-day disabled list.  He has been suffering from bone spurs in his right ankle the last couple of months; which doesn't sound fun at all.

In his place, the Dodger call up longtime Dodger farmhand Carlos Frias.  This is his very first trip to the "Show," and as you can imagine he's as excited as ever.  Via a tweet from MLB.com reporter Michael Lananna:

RHP Carlos Frias, not a man of many words, said he's excited to be up here. He's waited seven years. Expects to pitch out of the bullpen.

Frias has been in the Dodger system since they signed him out of the Dominican Republic as a 17-year old.  He has quietly risen through the ranks and now is a starting pitcher for the Albuquerque Isotopes.  Frias throws an low-90's fastball and a slider.  Per a Dodger press release:

Frias, 24, has combined to go 10-5 with a 4.58 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) with Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Albuquerque this year. The native of the Dominican Republic, who is making his first appearance on a 40-man roster, was a non-roster invitee to the club's 2014 Spring Training camp and made four appearances in Cactus League play. Frias will wear jersey no. 77.

You should expect him to pitch out of the bullpen as the Dodger long reliever - in place of Paul Maholm.  He may also provide a spot start, if needed.

BTW, Frias was one of the ballplayers ejected when Erisbel Arruebarrena went crazy in Reno, and was in the midst of serving a seven game suspension for his actions during the ensuing melee.  It's unclear to me if he is still serving his suspension.  The suspension was levied on July 28th, so today would be exactly a week later.

• ICYMI:  Justin Turner has been placed on the 15-day DL, and Carlos Triunfel has been called back from the minors.  Turner strained his left hamstringin saturday's game.

BACK TO SPRING TRAINING: After opening the 2014 Major League regular season with a pair of games against the D-backs in Australia last weekend, the Dodgers returned to exhibition play last night, losing 7-5 to the Angels. The clubs meet again tonight at Dodger Stadium before the series shifts to Anaheim for the Freeway Series finale tomorrow evening. Los Angeles won the Freeway Series last year, 2-1, and then the clubs split their four regular-season meetings, with each club protecting their home field. The clubs will play four times during the regular season this year, two games at Dodger Stadium, August 4-5, and two games in Anaheim, August 6-7.

• The Dodgers open their North American slate on Sunday evening against the Padres on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. Los Angeles will also battle the Padres on Tuesday and Wednesday before its home opener on Friday, April 4 at 1:10 p.m. against the Giants.

LIFE IN THE DESERT: The Dodgers went 6-10-5 during Cactus League play as they matched a Los Angeles record for Spring Training ties set in 2006 (15-13-5). In 12 home dates at Camelback Ranch – Glendale, the Dodgers drew 114,402 fans, with an average crowd of 9,534, their highest average since moving to Arizona in 2009.

HIGH NUMBERS: The Dodgers’ roster will be supplemented by minor leaguers RHP Matt Magill (#36), C Tim Federowicz (#26), RHP Sam Demel (#38), RHP Zach Lee (#64), RHP Red Patterson (#78), C Jose Capellan (96), INF Miguel Rojas (#72), INF Corey Seager (#94), INF Darnell Sweeney (#87), OF Joc Pederson (#65), OF Trayvon Robinson (#90) and LHP Tom Windle (#97).

GONE HOLLYWOOD: For the second consecutive season, the Dodgers will treat their fans to baseball-themed movies after three games – Saturday, April 26 “Field of Dreams” (6:10 p.m. vs. COL), Saturday May 31 “A League of Their Own” (4:15 p.m. vs. PIT) and Saturday, August 16 “The Natural” (6:10 p.m. vs. MIL). These three iconic and family-friendly baseball films will be screened for fans following each game and screenings are free with a game-day ticket. Fans sitting in the right field pavilion and left field pavilion will be invited down to the field postgame for a better viewing experience.

ALL DODGERS, ALL THE TIME: All three of the Freeway Series games will be televised by SportsNet LA, the exclusive new 24/7 TV network of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The network takes fans behind-the-scenes with the team and offers in-depth access to the organization, providing an immersive experience with never-before-seen content and thousands of hours of comprehensive Dodger programming. SportsNet LA will televise more than 140 live, regular-season Dodger games, plus a full slate of original, classic and live studio programming that focuses only on the Dodgers, covering the team in a way that it’s never been covered.

JOB FAIR: Tomorrow, the Dodgers will host their 19th annual Community Job Fair starting at 10:00 a.m. and more than 100 companies will be on hand to meet with members of the Los Angeles community. Last year, more than 5,000 job seekers from throughout Southern California gathered at the stadium to meet potential employers. This year’s Job Fair features training providers, government agencies and employers including: Kaiser Permanente, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Fairplex, Lowe’s and many more. Parking at Dodger Stadium and admission to the job fair is free. Also, free shuttle service into the stadium will be provided from the corner of Elysian Park Ave. and Sunset Blvd. Participants are encouraged to dress in business attire and bring their current resume. 

CHECK IT OUT: Tomorrow, Dodgers: Brotherhood of the Game, a new exhibition exploring the team’s storied past through four players and a Hall of Fame manager, will open at the Japanese American National Museum. Jackie Robinson, Fernando Valenzuela, Chan Ho Park, Hideo Nomo, and Tommy Lasorda—each of whom made history in his own right—will be prominently featured, as will owners Branch Rickey, Walter O’Malley, and Peter O’Malley. The exhibition continues through September 14.

NEW AND IMPROVED!: The latest round of stadium improvements are being unveiled this week, including:

• Expansion of the entries at the field level, with two new 25,000 square-foot plazas in right and left field.  Each plaza houses a 5,000 square-foot new team store, tickets and concessions space, as well as memorabilia to celebrate Dodger history.
• Seating and lounging areas at bars and drink rails overlooking the bullpens in the outfield, giving focus to pitchers warming up, as well as infield game views. 
• Two new restaurants in the outfield entrance plazas; Tommy Lasorda’s Italian Trattoria, in the right-field area of the plaza, and THINK BLUE BBQ in left-field.
• A new public wireless system.
• Sunset Blvd. Gate A, along Elysian Park Avenue, will feature a dedicated pedestrian entrance with new lighting in an effort to encourage fans to utilize parking lots 13 and 14.

UP FOR THE CHALLENGE: MLB’s new instant replay system will be on display for the Freeway Series games as managers will have the ability to challenge one call through the sixth inning (and receive another challenge if successful) and be able to request a review of any play after the seventh inning. Los Angeles had five test runs with the system in Cactus League play.

ZACH ATTACK: Minor league right handed-pitcher Zach Lee will make his third start of Cactus League play tonight and posted a 1-0 record with a 5.79 ERA thus far. Lee last started in an exhibition game against Team Australia on March 20 and struck out six, allowing one run on three hits in 4.0 innings, which did not count toward Cactus League stats. The 22-year-old, who was selected by the club in the first round (28th overall) of the 2010 MLB draft, went 10-10 with a 3.22 ERA in 28 games (25 starts) with Double-A Chattanooga last year, ranking among the Southern League leaders in wins (T-9th), innings pitched (142.2, 9th), strikeouts (131, 3rd) and WHIP (1.17, T-3rd).

• Kenley Jansen is scheduled to make his eighth appearance of the spring and has allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings in his previous outings. Jansen earned his first save of the 2014 regular season on Saturday night in Australia after finishing the 2013 campaign with a career-high 28 saves in 32 opportunities and ranked among the NL relief leaders in saves (T-11th), ERA (1.88, 6th), opponents’ batting average (.177, 7th), WHIP (0.86, 2nd) and strikeouts (111, 2nd).
• Also scheduled to pitch today are Jamey Wright, Chris Perez and Chris Withrow.

Welcome to the Scott Van Slyke Show - Dodger Pitching Sets a Tone

Yes, I did watch the first game of the season early this morning, and celebrated our victory in much the same way as I imagine most of Dodger Nation did.  As soon as the last out was made, I put my head on my pillow and went fast asleep.

So, my thoughts and comments on our win are a bit delayed.

This mornings Australia Baseball show was quite a sight to behold.  Unfortunately, it started about an hour late, so those of us who endeavored to enjoy the morning festivities had the burden of knowing that the sun might be out by the time the game ends.

Thankfully, wiping the sleep from my eyes and forcing myself to stay up was well worth it. 

In the first inning, Clayton Kersahw got knocked around a bit, but masterfully held on.  He allowed base hits to Aaron Hill and Goldschmidt.  Then, got the last two outs of the inning with meekly hit ground balls.  Watch a replay here.

In the second inning, we almost saw out first Dodger home run.  Unfortunately, a swirling wind came from the heavens and swatted it down.

No worries, though.  Scott Van Slyke's deep fly ended up being a double that put men on 2nd and 3rd base.  Andre Etheir then came up to score Adrian Gonzalez for our first run of the 2014 season with a run scoring ground out (see a replay here).  BTW, the video above also shows Van Slyke's subsequent home run in his next at-bat in the 4th inning.  Needless to say, our backup outfielder stole this mornings show.

Overall, Scott Van Slyke went 2 for 3, with a 2-run home run and a goofy flyball double that was badly misplayed by former Angel Mark Trumbo.  He provided an offensive spark plug that the Dodgers needed badly.  The meat of our lineup (Puig, Ramirez, Gonzalez, Uribe and Ethier) went a collective 1 for 20.  Ouch!

Dodger pitching has again shown to be one of our greatest strengths.  After a rough first inning, Clayton Kershaw settled down to go 6.2 phenomenal innings.  He gave up 5 hits, 1 walk and had 7 strike outs in his 101 pitch performance.  The Dodger relievers were even better.  Chris Perez, Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen didn't give up a hit in their combined 2.1 innings.  Something tells me those 3 will be stingy this season.

So, the Dodgers start the 2014 Baseball season with a victory, and look to leave the 'Land Down Under' with a second win later this evening.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will face Trevor Cahill.  I suspect the Dodgers will have a similar lineup as this morning; with the exception of possibly replacing right-handed batter Justin Turner for lefty Dee Gordon at 2nd base.

Thankfully, this game starts at a reasonable hour.  It begins at 7:00 PM tonight.  I hope to see you there.

GETAWAY DAY: The Dodgers conclude their Cactus League slate this afternoon against the Rockies in their final tuneup before departing for Australia. The club will depart from Phoenix around midnight tonight and touch down in Sydney around 10:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Following a few workouts, the Dodgers will take on Team Australia in an exhibition on Thursday night before playing regular season games against the D-backs on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. All games Down Under will be played at the historic Sydney Cricket Ground, which has been undergoing renovations to prepare for the first-ever MLB regular season games to be staged in Australia. 

• Clayton Kershaw will be the Dodgers’ Opening Day starter for the fourth consecutive season and has not allowed a run in his three previous season-opening outings (19.0 IP). The left-hander has racked up 19 strikeouts in his three Opening Day starts against the Giants (2013 – SHO, 2011 – 7.0 IP) and Padres (2012, 3.0 IP, exited game due to illness). Hyun-Jin Ryu will pitch the second game in Australia.
• Once back in the United States, the Dodgers will take on the Angels in the Freeway Series March 27-28 in Los Angeles and March 29 in Anaheim and then open the North American portion of the 2014 regular season on March 30 at San Diego. Los Angeles has opened in San Diego three times (1973, 2009, 2012), including two Opening Day victories at PETCO Park.
• This is the only Spring Training meeting between the clubs and Colorado won the 2013 season series, 10-9.
• The Dodgers will have six minor leaguers suiting up today, LHP Fu-Te Ni (#84), RHP Rob Rogers (#90), C Jan Vasquez (#87), INF Ozzie Martinez (#88), OF Jamie Romak (#94) and OF Jon Garcia (#89).

BIRTHDAY BOYS!: The Dodgers would like to wish relievers Brandon League (31) and Brian Wilson (32) very happy birthdays today!

ONE LAST TUNEUP: Hyun-Jin Ryu will make his final Cactus League start this afternoon as he builds toward Sunday’s start against Arizona in Sydney. Ryu allowed just one run on three hits in 5.0 innings in his last start against Oakland on Monday and has allowed just three runs in 11.0 innings this spring (2.45 ERA), while limiting opponents to a .220 batting average (9-for-41). The left-hander, who turns 27 on March 25, was selected to Baseball America’s All-Rookie team in 2013 and ranked among the top big league rookies in wins (14, T-2nd), winning percentage (.636, T-3rd), ERA (3.00, 2nd), strikeouts (154, 4th), innings pitched (192.0, 1st) and starts (30, T-3rd). His 14 wins tied with Kazuhisa Ishii (14-10, 2002) for the second-most by a Los Angeles rookie behind only Rick Sutcliffe’s 17 Ws in 1979.

• Kenley Jansen will go back-to-back for the first time this spring after walking one in a scoreless inning yesterday against the Padres. Jansen has surrendered just two hits and struck out six in 6.0 scoreless innings this spring.
• Chris Perez allowed two hits and struck out one in 0.2 innings yesterday against the Padres, his fifth scoreless outing in six appearances this spring. Perez has limited opponents to a .222 batting average in Cactus League play (4-for-18), striking out five and walking only one in 5.0 innings.
• J.P. Howell retired the only batter he faced, Yonder Alonso, to get the Dodgers out of a third-inning jam yesterday against the Padres for his fourth consecutive scoreless outing. Howell has tossed scoreless relief in five of six Spring Training appearances after posting career-bests with a 2.03 ERA, a .193 opponents’ batting average and a 1.05 WHIP, going 4-1 in 67 games with the Dodgers last year.
• Chris Withrow will make his sixth appearance of the spring today after striking out two in a scoreless inning on Friday against the Cubs. In his first big league action last year, Withrow went 3-0 with one save and a 2.60 ERA, limiting opponents to a .165 batting average in 26 relief appearances.

SPLITSVILLE: The Dodgers split yesterday’s doubleheader at Camelback Ranch, defeating the Padres, 5-4, in the afternoon and falling to the White Sox by the same score in the nightcap:  

• In yesterday’s afternoon game, 17-year-old phenom Julio Urias made his Cactus League debut and retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the first inning to pick up the win. Dee Gordon (2-for-3, SB, 3B, R, RBI) and Miguel Rojas (2-for-3) registered multi-hit games, raising their batting averages to .282 and .462, respectively. Following Urias, Kenley Jansen (1.0 IP), Javy Guerra (1.0), Chris Perez (0.2), J.P. Howell (0.1), Sam Demel (2.0) and Steve Smith (1.0) all threw scoreless baseball.
• Clayton Kershaw was tagged for five runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings in a loss under the lights in his final spring tuneup. The left-hander fell to 0-3 with a 9.20 ERA in four Cactus League starts. Justin Turner continued his hot hitting and reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs scored to raise his average to .333 in 15 games this spring.The official minor league slate of Spring Training games began yesterday and Dodger outfielder Matt Kemp played in the Triple-A game vs. Kansas City, going 1-for-2 with a single. Kemp played 3.0 innings in center field and will have a scheduled off day today.  

WALK THIS WAY: As a team, the Dodgers have been patient at the plate during Cactus League play, drawing 81 walks (2nd, MLB) in 20 spring games. Last year, the Dodgers ranked third in the NL with a .326 team on-base percentage.

• Los Angeles ranks second among NL clubs with 20 stolen bases this spring, including nine by Dee Gordon, tops in the Majors. Gordon has gone a perfect 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts this spring and the Dodgers, as a team, have been successful on 20 of 22 attempts.

HEY, NEIGHBOR!: The Dodgers and White Sox square off this afternoon in the first of two Cactus League meetings this spring with the other coming in a split-squad meeting on March 15. Although the Dodgers played their first home game of the spring yesterday against the Diamondbacks, today will mark the official “Opening Day,” with both teams lining up down the baseline for player introductions. The contest today also marks the start of Spring Training play for the White Sox.

• The Dodgers picked up their first victory of the spring yesterday in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the Diamondbacks. Third baseman Juan Uribe hit the Dodgers’ first home run of the spring and non-roster invitee Brendan Harris drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
• Right-handed starter Zack Greinke lasted just four pitches before he was pulled with a mild right calf strain, but five Dodger relievers came to the rescue, combining to hold the Diamondbacks scoreless over the last 6.1 innings of play.

KOREAN SENSATION: Hyun-Jin Ryu will take the mound today for the first time in Cactus League play after finishing his rookie season in Dodger blue with a 14-8 record and a 3.00 ERA in 2013. In his first season in the Major Leagues, Ryu was named to Baseball America’s 2013 All-Rookie Team and ranked among the top big league rookies in wins (14, T-2nd), ERA (3.00, 2nd) and strikeouts (154, 4th). The South Korean native’s 14 wins were tied for second-most by a Dodger rookie behind only Rick Sutcliffe’s 17 wins in 1979. Also appearing in the game today:

• RHP Brian Wilson enters his second season with the Dodgers after posting a 2-1 record with a 0.66 ERA in his first year in Dodger blue.
• Dodger closer Kenley Jansen will make his first appearance of the spring after finishing 2013 with a career-high in saves (28) and strikeouts (111). Jansen’s 111 strikeouts on the season were ranked second among Major League relievers.
• LHP J.P. Howell will make his first appearance of the spring after limiting opponents to a .193 batting average in 67 games last season.
• RHP Chris Perez will see his first action in Dodger blue after spending the 2013 campaign with Cleveland. Perez, 28, converted 123 saves over four seasons for the Indians from 2010-2013.
• Simi Valley native Matt Magill will make his 2013 Cactus League debut after seeing his first Major League action with the Dodgers in 2013.

THE GANG IS ALL HERE: Dodger partner AM 570 Fox Sports Los Angeles is going mobile today as the “Petros and Money” show will air live from McFadden’s at Westgate in Glendale, AZ. Expected to join the dynamic duo at the restaurant will be Dodger General Manager Ned Colletti and Dodger reliever J.P. Howell. For the game broadcast on AM 570, new Dodger broadcaster and six-time All-Star Nomar Garciaparra makes his radio debut this afternoon. Break a leg, Nomar!  

MAKIN’ LEFT TURNS: Later today, Hall of Fame announcer Jaime Jarrín will serve as the Grand Marshal of the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series race at Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale. This will be the second year for the event and Dodger broadcaster Pepe Yñiguez will serve as the race’s Honorary Starter. The Toyota 120 opens the 2014 NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series championship season and is scheduled for a 7 p.m. MT start time today. The race will be telecast nationally in the United States on the mun2 cable network, live-streamed at DeportesTelemundo.com and south-of-the-border coverage will be provided by FOX Sports Latin America. THE DODGERS IN SPAIN: “Baseball Tournament of Valencia Sponsored by the Dodgers” is a groundbreaking four-day tournament currently taking place in Valencia, Spain, comprised of the Baseball Federations of Spain, France, Germany and Italy. The tournament started yesterday and runs through March 2. The top U-19 players from all four countries will play in front of scouts from more than a dozen Major League teams and yesterday in Valencia, Germany defeated Spain, 6-5, in the first game and Italy defeated France, 4-3, in the second. The first pitch before tomorrow’s game will be thrown out by former Cuban star and Spanish Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Sabin.

IT’S YOUR LUCKY DAY: The Dodgers’ annual open tryout was held yesterday on the minor league side of Camelback Ranch – Glendale. As in past years, the Dodgers signed two players from the tryout, as the club inked right-handed pitcher Danny Keller and right-handed reliever Steven Edlefsen to minor league deals. Edlefsen pitched in San Francisco’s system for seven seasons (2007-2013) and made 27 relief appearances in the big leagues from 2011-12, posting an 0-1 record with a 6.75 ERA. The Minnesota native was originally selected by San Francisco in the 16th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. Keller was in the Milwaukee system from 2011-13.

SUNDAY RITUAL: The Dodgers completed their 10th full-squad workout today with the club’s Cactus League opener just three days away! Los Angeles will kick off its 25-game exhibition slate on Wednesday against the D-backs at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick. Reigning Cy Young Award-winner Clayton Kershaw will make his first Cactus League start for the Dodgers.

• Clayton Kershaw, Seth Rosin, Ross Stripling, Sam Demel, Javy Guerra, Jose Dominguez and Daniel Moskos all tossed normal bullpens sessions this morning.

AND THEN THERE WAS A GAME (KIND OF): The Dodgers played the first of two intra-squad games today in a contest that was marked by some first-inning fireworks with the bat. The first three batters from “Team Wills” all scored off “Team Koufax” starter Hyun-Jin Ryu as Dee Gordon belted a leadoff homer, Juan Uribe doubled and Hanley Ramirez smoked a two-run home run. Those runs would hold up as “Team Wills” won 3-1 in the four-inning contest. For the victors, Matt Magill allowed one run in 2.0 innings and was followed to the mound by Brian Wilson (1.0 IP, 2 K) and Chris Perez (1.0 IP), who both threw scoreless baseball. On the losing side, Ryu gave up three runs in 2.0 innings while Kenley Jansen and J.P. Howell each tossed a scoreless frame. Scott Van Slyke drove in the lone run for “Team Koufax,” plating Yasiel Puig with a single.

• Tomorrow morning, the boys are back for round 2 at 11:30 A.M., on Field 1 at Camelback Ranch - Glendale. Pitchers scheduled to throw tomorrow include Stephen Fife, Dan Haren, Chris Reed, Paco Rodriguez and Jamey Wright.

BASEBALL THIS MORNING: Bright and early tomorrow morning, the ESPN “Baseball Tonight” bus rolls into Camelback Ranch – Glendale for its annual spring trip. Karl Ravech, John Kruk and Tim Kurkjian will be on hand as the show will tape and go live near the Field 1 third base side. Clayton Kershaw will be on the show live at 7:00 A.M. PT/8 A.M. MT.   

THIS TIME IT COUNTS: In just 27 days, the Boys in Blue will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first-ever regular season games in Australia. The trip to Sydney begins on March 16 when the club leaves Arizona after their game against the Rockies at Camelback Ranch – Glendale that afternoon. Today, a television crew from Eyewitness Ten News in Sydney shot b-roll and interviewed several Dodger players in the clubhouse, including Andre Ethier, Brian Wilson and Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez then donned an official National Rugby League jersey (South Sydney Rabbitohs) and flashed his trademark “I see you” pose for team photographer Jon SooHoo.  

• Following their trip to Australia, the Dodgers will return to Los Angeles and play three exhibitions against the Angels in the Freeway Series before opening the “North American” portion of their schedule March 30 at San Diego on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.
