Blog Kiosk: 12/8/2014 - Dodger Links - Galaxy Wins, Kershaw Wins Three More and Misinformation

Congratulations to the LA Galaxy on their record 5th MLS Championship yesterday afternoon.  They defeated the New England Revolution 2-1.  As you can see in the photo above, Adrian Gonzalez was on-hand to root for the home team.  Photo above via @DodgersPR on twitter.

Below are some links to check out:
  • In case you didn't know, the Baseball Winter Meetings are happening right now in San Diego.  So, if there's any trade to be made for our outfielders we may find out soon.  As you can imagine, there are rumors everywhere and I'm not going to spend much time rehashing them all.  Just understand that not everything you read about (rumor-wise) is real.  As Dodger President of Operations Andrew Friedman recently said, "misinformation can be a powerful tool."
  • Via Bill Plunkett at the OC Register, "Dodgers know rumors part of the deal."
“It’s comical,” the Dodgers’ new president of baseball operations (Andrew Friedman) said of the daily assortment of “hot stove” rumors that always seem to include mysteriously sourced reports that his team is ready to make some big move – something that wasn’t true during his days running the small-market Tampa Bay Rays.

“I think coming in I understood and appreciated that it comes with the territory,” he said. “But to see it actually play out? … It’s comical.”
  • Via Eric Stephen at True Blue LA, "3 Dodgers deals that didn't happen."  Eric takes a look at three reportedly close Dodger deals that were all for naught this winter; including a potential trade with the Diamondbacks featuring Andre Ethier for Miguel Montero.  Misinformation or real?
  • As for the reportedly nixed trade indicated above, Steve Gilbert at the Hot Stove blog has a quote from Diamondbacks GM Dave Stewart.
“Right now, believe me, you guys have seen how I worked,” Stewart said. “If I was motivated to move him, he’d probably be gone by now. Right now, I’m not motivated to do anything. Like I said, our ownership hasn’t told us that we have to move him. So for today, as far as I can tell you, he’s going to be a part of this team.”
Misinformation or real?
  • Just more awards for Clayton Kershaw.  Over the weekend it was announced that Kershaw won 3 GIBBY Awards: Most Valuable Major Leaguer, Starting Pitcher of the Year and Pitching Performance of the Year.  Graphic below via @Dodgers on twitter.

Sunday Dodgers Videos: Roenicke, Puig and AJ Ellis

Here are this Sunday's Dodgers videos.

Former Dodger Ron Roenicke is interviewed by Robert Barr for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots Winter League Legacy Project.  Barr is working on producing a documentary on a legendary team from 2001.  Go to his website here that includes numerous other videos.  You can also watch Barr's interview with Mickey Hatcher right here.  As a spoiler, Mickey talks about the day he chased a bear in Alaska.

Blog Kiosk: 8/3/2013 - Dodgers Links - Soccer at Dodger Stadium, Marmol and Ryu as ROY

When Puig become the artist.  I love this pic of Puig playing the photrographer.  Pic via Jon SooHoo/LA Dodgers 2013.
“I think he’s been underrated,” Mattingly said. “I don’t hear a lot of people talking about him.”
“I expected louder boos, Marmol said. “When I was warming up in the bullpen, a lot of people were very nice and thanked me. I guess the others forgot. I know I was bad this year and they are mad at me. Nothing I can do about that.”
  • Dodgers tie a new franchise record.

The conversion from baseball diamond to soccer field required 12,500 square feet of new sod and Bermuda grass, which took Hansen and his crew of nine two days to place, smooth and outline. The temporary field, which is about 210 feet wide, runs parallel to the right-field line starting just outside the third base coaching box and extending 315 feet to the warning track in right field.
  • Here is a pic of the pitch at Dodger Stadium.

Blog Kiosk: 5/29/2013 Some Dodgers Links

Check out this great photo shares by Sports Illustrated. Sandy Amoros (15), Don Bessent (46), Don Newcombe, Duke Snider (4) and a bottle of beer celebrate in the Brooklyn Dodgers’ locker room after beating Pittsburgh in Sept. 1956. ( John G. Zimmerman/SI)
When it comes to what Urias throws, he's a precocious talent, showing three pitches that have a chance at being plus. Prior to being signed, Urias threw an upper 80s to lower 90s fastball, and a change up that projected as plus as well. His curve would flash plus but was fairly inconsistent. At only six feet tall and a...mature build (you'll see) there might not be a ton of projection left in regards to the fastball.
  • Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times lets us know that soccer will be played at Dodger Stadium in August.  In my opinion, it's not as cool as the hockey game that will be played months later.  Still, you gotta like how they are expanding the use of our second home.  BTW, Real Madrid will be playing in a game.  They tell me they are a good team.
  • Craig Calcaterra at Hardball Talk makes note of Mark Walter's hands-off approach to ownership.  I'll add that anyone who actually wanted Magic Johnson to be actively involved with the team is nuts.
  • MLB FanCave shares a pic of a 1955 Jackie Robinson cap that was on display at a New Era Cap event, via their twitter.

Sunday Dodgers Videos: SF Cops Undercover, the Galaxy and Some Dodger Interviews in the Clubhouse

Here are this Sunday's Dodgers Videos.

Here's an interesting report on how the SF police are going undercover as Dodger fans at games.

    Video Link:

Here's a video of Galaxy Night at Dodger Stadium.  Galaxy players toured Dodger stadium, met members of the Dodgers, threw the first pitch and enjoyed a great game at LA Galaxy Night at Dodger Stadium! Greg Cochrane and Todd Dunivant almost duked it out to decide who was going to get to throw first pitch and Charlie Rugg tried to sneak his way into Dodgers batting practice, but otherwise just a quiet evening for the boys!

Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 11/19/2012 - Kuroda, Fujikawa, Grienke and Ryu

Dee Gordon shared a photo on twitter of his new glove.  He wrote, "My new baby! I can't wait to dirty you up!!!"
Previously, teams have been under the impression that Kuroda would either re-sign with the New York Yankees or return to his native Japan to finish his career. But Kuroda has told friends that his first preference is to pitch in Southern California, where his two daughters are attending elementary school.
Fujikawa, considered among the top closers in Nippon Pro Baseball over the last decade, toured the facilities of Arizona and the Chicago Cubs in the last week. He is expected to also visit with the Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers, both of whom have expressed interest.
According to an industry insider, the Dodgers are the favorites to wind up with top free agent starter Zack Greinke, with the Angels and Rangers on the outside looking in.

Weekend Autograph Opportunities: How About Some Galaxy

Here are this weekends autograph opportunities and events throughout the Southland. As always, be sure to check the Blue Heaven Calendar for other events (a link can always be found on the tab at the top of this page, just left of center), and always confirm with the establishment. Everything is subject to change.  Please email me with any tips about upcoming events in Southern California.  As the rest of the week progresses I'll update this post with other events (if there are any) as I become aware of them.  Also, I don't always list every event below, so be sure to check my Calendar.  I always try to favor free signing events over paying events.  Click on any pic to embiggen.

There doesn't appear to be much happening on the autograph front this coming weekend.  A CJ Wilson signing was originally planned for this coming Saturday at OC Sportscards, but that has been postponed and pushed back a couple of weeks.  Also, as you'll see below the Derrel Thomas signing at Manuel's Original El Tepeyac Cafe has also been postponed.  Hey, at least there's soccer.
    -------------------------

    A Special Notice

As has been widely reported elsewhere, Derrel Thomas was to make an appearance at Manuel's Original El Tepeyac Cafe in the City of Industry.  Unfortunately, it was reported on their facebook account that it has been postponed.  It will be rescheduled.

Again, Derrel Thomas will not be there this Saturday!  Below is the original flyer from Manuel's Original El Tepeyac Cafe.  The Manny Mota appearance on September 29th is still expected to happen.
    -------------------------

This might be the only public signing event this weekend.  LA Galaxy defender AJ DeLaGarza will be at a Grand Opening of a Home Depot in Fullerton!  He will sign for fans, and there will be prizes.  It will be on Saturday, September 8th from 11:00 am -12:30 pm.  Go the Galaxy's calendar of event for more information, here.

    Dodgers Blog Kiosk: 7/27/2012

I really love this Upper Deck original art card being inserted into their 2012 Goodwin Champion set.  All 50 cards of the original 1888 set have been reproduced with actual drawings.  Above is the "Parisian Bob" Caruthers card who played for the Brooklyn team that would eventually be called the Dodgers.  See other art cards from the set here.  BTW, they called him "Parisian Bob" due to a contract negotiation he conducted in 1885-86 while in Paris.
    • Check out Steven's contest at Zim's Autographs for a free Steve Garvey signed mini-bat.  I love this guy's enthusiasm for the autograph hobby.
    • Former DodgerTalk co-host Josh Suchon has a new Dodger book coming out called, "Miracle Men," via Out of Ink.  It's about the 1988 Dodgers, and it will come out in 2013.
More than a book about the players and games, the author will track down fans who left early and missed Gibson's famed home run, including some future major leaguers. It will be argued this game forever branded Dodgers fans for “arriving late and leaving early.” The history of the baseball that Gibson hit will be detailed by the (many) people who claim to own it.
    • Todd Coffey shows us his post Tommy John surgery elbow on twitter.  See it on the right.  Click on the pic to embiggen, if you dare.
    • Clayton's Texas BBQ and HoeDown is this coming Thursday, August 2nd.  There is still enough time to sign up and help out a great cause.  Go here for more details.
    • The Dodgers Dream Foundation's Bowling Extravaganza hosted by James Loney is on August 23rd.  This is the 8th annual event and many current and former Dodgers are expected to attend.  Go here for details.
“What do you mean you got traded,” my new wife said to me as I entered the house with a plane ticket in my hand, “Where are you going? What does this mean for us?”
“I’m going to Canada, and I have to leave now.” It was a very, very tough conversation, especially when you’re packing two suitcases through it all. She’s in shock because forty minutes ago we were all set to spend the day at the beach together as a couple and now she’s going to her mother’s house wondering what the next two months of her marriage will be like and I’m heading out on a flight to Montreal. Remember, I was born in San Diego, my wife and I had our friends and family all around us. It’s the part of this game, most sports really, that few fans ever consider. When you call up a sports radio station and discuss a trade, you rarely consider or say “I think Hanley Ramirez should go to L.A. because he just spent the last four months interviewing pre-schools with his wife and there’s a number of quality Goddard locations,” or “A certain outfielder can’t be traded to the Rockies because his son has asthma and can’t really handle the Colorado atmosphere.”
    • Here's a great pic from the "Keeper of the Cup," via twitter @keeperofthecup.  Check out Lord Stanley and Wilson.

Blog Kiosk: 6/8/2012- Catching up on some Dodgers News

Topps recently released a bunch of preview pics of some rare "1 of 1" bat knob cards that will be inserted into this years Tier One cases.  Two Dodgers are available amid the 100 different knob cards being created.  Check out the Snider and Matt Kemp above and below.  This set is coming out later this month.  See the Beckett story for more information and pics of all 100 cards.
    • The Dodger Dream Foundation Auction is current going on and includes autographed jerseys worn on Jackie Robinson Day.  Go here to check them all out.  This Matt Kemp signed game-worn jersey is already up to $2,825.00.

    • Soccer is making a big push in LA.  After the Galaxy's recent league championship they now team up with the Dodgers to offer a Dodgers Night at a Galaxy game on June 23rd (with limited edition Dodgers/ Galaxy scarf being given away) and a Galaxy Night at Dodger Stadium on July 30th (get a free signed Landon Donovan photo).  Go here for information on how to get in.
    • If you haven't seen it yet, here is a glimpse at the Mike Scioscia bobble head being given out on Tuesday, June 12th.
Long-time baseball executive Bob Wolfe was named executive vice president of the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced. Wolfe rejoins Dodgers President and CEO Stan Kasten with whom he teamed with the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals.
That's a pretty good pedigree, right?
    • A complete listing of all 41 players drafted by the Dodgers can be seen here.  Click pic below to embiggen.
Los Angeles continued to select players with big league bloodlines on the draft’s final day, selecting Jordan Hershiser, son of former Dodger Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser, out of USC with its 34th-round selection and then taking Jose Vizcaino Jr., son of former Dodger infielder and current Special Advisor, Baseball Operations & Player Development Jose Vizcaino, in the 36th round.

    Weekend Autograph Opportunities:

I am super bummed out! I came down with a terrible cold/cough on Friday and thought I could take care of it on my own with some over-the-counter meds. Well, I dismally failed at that. So, I finally decided to go to my doctor yesterday and was told that I was on the verge of pneumonia. Given that, I'm gonna miss an event I had been looking forward to.

Tonight, at the LA Kings game against the Phoenix Coyotes, will be Dodgers Pride Night. Since I have season tickets to the Kings I await this night with the eagerness of a small child. I get to enjoy a great game while simultaneously being able to get autographs from a Dodger. It doesn't get better than that, right?

Well, I can't be there, but that shouldn't stop you. As I wrote earlier this week, Tim Leary (member of the 1988 World Series Dodgers team) and Matt Luke will be on hand to sign free autographs for fans. BTW, if you plan on attending please pass along some pics. I'd love to post them up.

Jon SooHoo has just started posting pics again and they are glorious. If you haven't checked out Dodgers photographer his website recently then you are really missing out. The agreement stipulates that prospective buyers "may submit bids that include the purchase of the parking lots."

    • Forbes writes about Fred Claire's pursuit of the Dodgers.
In speaking with Claire, he said he had no plans about being a part of a group seeking to purchase the Dodgers until this summer when he received a phone call from Ben Hwang, a one-time batboy with the Dodgers who is a former executive at an international biotechnology company. He and Claire have begun piecing a group together with several others, including sports executives Andy Dolich, Joe Heitzler and Paul Kalil, as well as Charles Lee of the Nixon Peabody law firm. The investment group is going under the name “BCH 99”.
